Should I be lagging this badly on the lowest possible settings?

Getting around 5-10 FPS on lowest possible settings. Weird thing though, is I'm also getting 5-10 on medium and high.

Performance hasn't been great for me either. I have everything set to lowest, and then turned off texture downscaling and put texture memory size to medium. The game then becomes playable and looks okay at 1920x1200 (probably getting 20ish FPS)

This is on my laptop with:

    Drivers. Get new ones.

Apparently Nvidia dropped the ball on releasing their shit on time, but now there's a beta you can get that supposedly fixes all the low FPS problems. There's an article on IGN about it.

I, unfortunately, am facing completely different problems that won't even let me start the game. Fuck.

Yea those specs are kind of low for this game, I have a i7 - 16gb ram with a Gtx480.  I'm running it in medium at 1980x1020, arround 30-40 fps.

They releasing a optimization patch soon I think.. but ayway gtx 280 my take: it won't cut it at max resolution anyway.

I wouldn't worry that much it still looks amazing at low,  try lowering your resolution.

    These drivers?  http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-64bit-270.61-whql-driver.html

I searched and those are the latest, can't find any beta driver.

Your system is similar enough to mine, and I get 30-40ish with most things prettied up. Just got shadows lower, SSAO off, ubersampling off, and all blurs off. 1680x1050 mind you.

Yep, the driver changed nothing for me either (except that it looks worse), but the game is running "alright" for me on high on a phenom II 955 (quad) + GTX 275.. I read an article somewhere that you have a huge disadvantage with less than 3 cores and I'm not sure if there is a way to make it run more smoothly right now. :( Hopefully a patch and new drivers will boost the performance at least a little bit for you guys so you can enjoy the game.

Well with that gfx in other games i had 100+ fps but here i have 30. Developers hands grow from ass.

Another strange thing is 30 fps on ultra and 40 fps on LOWEST POSSIBLE SETTINGS. I MEAN HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE, how could they release this shit

@CL60: I always found it ludicrous but I have heard that once a friend got better performance from increasing the resolution. Think it has to do with what part of the computer is doing the processing...some things go to CPU others to GPU. I'm just pulling this out of my ass of course since I have the tech knowledge of a badger.

Anyway, might be worth playing around with having different settings on mid-high while others stay low or off.

i think this is the answer right here. a technically marvelous game that doesn't have the best optimization in the world, surely is CPU heavy. i won't buy it until i upgrade my CPU then (which will happen with a GPU upgrade too)

@CL60: don't know if that helps any.

    1. The game runs with varying speed, speeding up or slowing down spontaneously (with AMD Athlon 64 x2 processor)

      The problem:
There occur problems with many games when we use AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core. Among those issues are hitching of the graphics, the speed of the game dropping or changing suddenly. These problems are usually caused by missing drivers for AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processors.

    Solution:
Install the latest versions of these programs:
    1. AMD Dual-Core Optimizer
    2. AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Driver
The drivers for AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core can be found on the AMD company's website.

These drivers are meant EXCLUSIVELY for AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processors and installing them on a computer with a different processor can cause damage to the system.

There's your problem. That CPU is pretty weak, and I bet you're not getting anywhere near the framerates you should be in other games as well.
I recall 8800GT cards were bottlenecked by this to an extent, so I can only imagine that a GTX 460 would be even much more so. It's really holding that card back.

Get yourself a cheap Phenom II and your problem should be gone.

@nissanskyline For the people that get nearly the same fps on highest and lowest settings, it's because of your CPU. The Advanced Settings mostly influence the GPU, so this is a surefire way to tell after you ruled out the Nvidia 3d bug thingie.  And can you cut insulting the developer when you're the one too daft to inform yourself?

    @Yanngc33,

I'm playing on "max settings", bar UberSampling of course. Think of UberSampling as a feature that's for people coming back to the game three years down the road. Know what it does? It does all the work your CPU+GPU does without it THREE TIMES OVER. So it's FPS without ubersampling / 3. It looks beautiful and is in all ways superior to AA+AF, but it crushes your fps by definition. :)

To be honest the new 275.27 driver didn't make much of a difference in terms of frame rate compared to the 270.61 drivers. I'm still getting 40-60 FPS on an overclocked GTX 570 at 1920x1080 with everything maxed out except for Cinematic DOF and Ubersampling. Though with the latest driver, I am at least able to alt-tab to Windows without the game freezing. Well at least the game makes full use of the GPU, it probably has the highest GPU usage I've seen out of games that have been released recently (i.e. it peaks at 99% GPU usage constantly).

Also to the OP, if you're not seeing a difference between low and high settings in terms of framerate, that means you're either being CPU limited or someone else is going on that is preventing your GPU from performing to it's potential.

    Hello to All

I am using an Quad Core Intel with an Nvidia 9800 GTX ... I played Crysis 2, Shogun Total War and Dragon Age 2 with no problems at all.
But in the new game the Witcher 2, i got some Lag problems....Let me try to explain what  is the issue :
When i load the saved game it starts with NO LAG at all, even in High settings...But after some minutes the lagging starts and when i die ( it happens alot) i have to re-load the game and the lag starts too, or even when i finish one level after loading the next cutscene or the next level, guess what ? lag again... I just noticed that if i quit the game and load again i have like 10-15 minuts without lag, but if i die or finish that level i will have to quit the game and then come back in.
I tried to put the setting at lowest as possible, but it wont help....its doesnt matter if its in low or high, the lag just keep coming after sometime.
Can some please help me ?
    Thx alot for your attention.

I actually just managed to fix my other issue (the problem was between the chair and keyboard) and seem to be having the same experience as you. I have a GTX 470 as well, and an i7 950. Tried cranking it all the way up, with supersampling and all that, and it was still passable. Without SS it seems to run at a smooth 40+ FPS. Granted, I didn't leave the starting camp area because I wanna finish L.A. Noire first, so maybe it'll all break down on me later.

Yeah its the CPU... i have a 460GTX 1gb and a i7-930 with 4 gigs of ram and i can run the game @ 1600 x 1050 high no problem with AASO and motion blur turned off. The game was optimized to be eventually ported to consoles so anything under 3 cores is going to suffer.
