In a twin stick control scheme, one stick controls the player character's movement while the other stick controls the aiming of the weapon.
A common usage of this control scheme is the Dual Joystick Shooter, a genre dating back to Gun Fight in 1975 but made more popular with the release of Robotron 2084 in 1984, and still represented by new, mostly indie titles in 2011.
In more recent years, twin stick control has also become the most common control method for the First-Person Shooter genre on home consoles. It is also now commonly used in the Third-Person Shooter genre.
