Winterson is an NYPD homicide detective and friend and co-worker of Max Payne. Divorced and raising a blind son on her own, she is regarded as one of the best detectives in the department. It is hinted that Winterson had feelings for Max at one point, but by the time of the events of the game she has begun seeing another man. Winterson is highly secretive regarding her boyfriend's identity.
Winterson's boyfriend is ultimately revealed to be Vladimir Lem, the infamous Russian mobster and secret member of the Inner Circle. After Max becomes involved with the Mona Sax case, Winterson and Lem conspire to kill them both and frame them for the death of Senator Sebastian Gates.
Winterson is ultimately killed while confronting Max and Mona at the Castling construction site. She is shot by Max when it appears she is about to kill Mona. Winterson succumbs to her wounds but not before returning fire and seriously injuring Max, setting up the opening flashback of the game.
