Valiant Hearts: The Great War Review. 0

Valiant Hearts shows a wonderful amount of respect and appreciation for the time period. The first world war is a period of history that isn't all too often recreated in video game form, you're much more likely to see another world war two shooter hit the market. However in many respects the bloody first world war that lasted between 1914 and 1918 was a turning point in the history of mankind and witnessed development in a great many areas of warfare, medicine, communication and so much more. It'...

Valiant Hearts: The Great War REVIEW 0

Link to Video ReviewWorld War 1 was probably one of the least glamorous conflicts in European history.Men fought and died crawling in muddy entrenchments, thousands of soldiers were thrown into machine gun fire just for very small forward advances, and it was the first time in history chemical warfare was used and the only defense was a urine soaked rag strapped across the nose and mouth. So it's not surprising that the video game industry hasn't tackled it in any meaningful way as of yet.Valiant...

    A Truly Unique Experience 0

Valiant Hearts: The Great War was announced last September. It's one of those games that peaked my interest right from the start. World War I is a very unexplored setting with a dark story. The art style also really caught my eye. Now that I've played through the game, I'm here to give you my impressions of Valiant Hearts: The Great War.Valiant Hearts is the 2nd non-Rayman game use the UbiArt framework, the 1st being Child of Light. Child of Light looked beautiful, so I had pretty high expectati...

Valiant Hearts: The Great War Review: The Follies of Men 0

To the minds at Ubisoft Montpellier, my heartstrings were just another tool to leverage their storytelling. Valiant Hearts: The Great War tests the loyalties of four main characters amid the first World War, selling the sadness and tragedy of human conflict in a more potent dose than history fans might expect. With cel-shaded visuals for good measure, Valiant Hearts remains a powerful advocate of the “games as art” argument throughout, though I wish the “game” part was sl...

War is the Only Enemy Worth Fighting 0

Valiant Hearts is a World War I puzzle adventure game with an elementary school approach to education. It's simple, clean and very straightforward. Historical facts abound through hidden collectibles but the focus of the game is the human relationships in the middle of the war. And not necessary those of the "main" characters - no, Valiant Hearts is just about relationships in general. Well, relationships during a fucked up time. The game has four main characters who are also joined by an adorab...

Video Review - Valiant Hearts: The Great War 0

Valiant Hearts: The Great War is a 2D adventure game from Ubisoft Montpellier. It is one of the few games set in World War I and one of the few war games to focus on puzzle solving rather than combat. The game follows three characters as he war takes them in different directions and occasionally brings them together. Their stories have their ups and downs but, aside from the ending, they aren't gripping. It's not always consistent in its execution but it gets points for striving for something di...

Not a fun game but an important one nonetheless 0

The cast of main characters in Valiant Hearts: Emile, Anna, Freddie, Walt, and Karl (from left to right).Valiant Hearts: The Great War begins with the start of the first World War, narrating the events that kicked off the conflict. The story then follows a handful of different characters: Karl, Emile, Freddie, Anna, and Walt. Karl, a German man living in France with his wife and newborn child, is deported to Germany and drafted into the army. Karl’s father-in-law, Emile, is inspired by the...

Mini Review: Remembering the first world war 0

Valiant Hearts is a good puzzle game that manages to respect the setting it is portraying. Sure the cartoon art style may clash a bit with the horrors it is showing but it manages to still be effective at telling a compelling story with only a narrator. Some of the puzzles do slow down the pacing of the game every now and then yet it is always a unique puzzle that requires the player to do something new to solve it. The best thing this game does is that it makes you care about the cast of chara...

    Departure from normal Ybisoft 0

Really well done historical account/recreation. Homage really. You play as multiple characters that are narratively connected but some of the time not directly involved in the war. The cartoonish style seems off putting for such a serious subject. However in practice the emotional attachment is that much more surprising and effective due to its first glance appearances. This is adventure/puzzle game first and foremost. You won't really be doing any shooting or combo breakers. Something I found rat...

An emotional journey on your own terms 0

A video game about a world war is probably one of the least innovative things you could produce in today's market. How many world wars have you played through guns blazing with shrill Germans screaming and butch Americans cheering? Probably a fair few. But that's not the case with Valiant Hearts: The Great War. This time the game doesn't start you in a trench, rifle in hand ready to shoot endless waves of enemies who all seem to be aiming for you. In fact throughout the entirety of the game you ...

100 year anniversary and yet we are still here. 0

The most fetch quest game ever made. But it’s historical. It belongs up there with Carmen San Diego and The Oregon trail with its constant teachable moments. You can pet the dog. But you can’t really fully control the dog. Teamwork makes the dream work. There is one particular area where you had to crack a safe using an obscure cipher that an in-game hint system helped me solve. There’s another one later in the game that I relished in figuring out for myself, so no harm no fou...
