Does it really matter about the lending games at launch?

Who is buying a console at launch without games and waiting to get them from a friend? You are going to play those games for a bit until new games come out.

If they fix it after the first month, that will be sufficient, no one (a big majority) won't care for the first few months.

Man, this is the least excited I've been about a new console generation ever. ps4 seems like the only viable option so far and just sticking with the pc.

Here's a question. What happens when/if MS is hacked by a group like Anounymous, much like what happened to Sony

I"m glad that Microsoft at least cleared up most of the bigger questions gamers have before E3 so they can focus on games. I have no issue with checking in every 24 hours--silly though it is--but every single hour over a friend's house is just absurd. I'm also worried that--since retailers will have to be licensed to resell Xbox One games--they'll charge a fee to consumers for the service. Does anyone really think GameStop isn't already thinking about this?

This is all very confusing and mildly acceptable (at best), given the information we have so far.

But the important part that most seem to be skipping in all of this: what's saying Sony won't have a similar (or exactly the same) strategy as Microsoft? Sony have barely said anything straight up regarding this stuff, and it's quite obvious it's the big publishers that are pushing these 'features' onto the Xbox One. So if Sony is the 'white knight' in this scenario, and do the right thing for the consumer and say "we won't have any of this!", does that mean that major publishers will ignore that platform?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: do not be surprised when Sony announce their strategy and it's extremely similar to Microsoft's. What's more interesting will be to see if all the people going "FUCK M$, SONY IS DOING IT RIGHT" right now will sing the same tune by then.

You know what? Even drug dealers treat their customers better than this. Video game companies seem to treat us with contempt, open disdain even. And this is all a culmination of that.

Which is weird because ideally, it should be in the game companies' best interests to NOT piss us off as much as possible since, you know, WE'RE the ones buying the games and keeping them in business. In fact, I believe that most companies don't want to piss off their customers for that very reason. It just doesn't help that there's a sizable amount of people that somehow feel entitled to playing the product of someone else's hard work for free and still expect to receive the same amount of support as paying customers, which, like it or not, does have an impact on the industry at large. Yes, publishers should show a bit more respect for their customers, but customers have to do the same for the publishers too by being responsible with their purchases and not pirate their stuff even when the publishers treat them nicely.

So don't waste my money? Gotcha. I already have Steam and don't need a shittier, more convoluted version.

Not lending or renting games at a launch? Pretty darn awful.

P.S. the old PS3 thing was soooooo cool.

@courage_wolf: I have 191 games on my library that I got for pennies on the dollar, I have utter confidence whenever I turn on my computer that I've got access to them at all times, and most importantly Steam doesn't have to pay service to retail price points so prices go down as much as 75% with fair regularity.

3/4ths of a normal game's cost is the sort of cost I don't mind paying to remove my ability to resell... hell, I can't even think of the service that'd allow me to get that much back. In a way nabbing a game on 75% steam sale is like buying the game and trading it in, but being allowed to keep the game =P

Microsoft has not shown it has the inclination to keep servers up forever (in fact it's shown the opposite, and this is very relevant, especially if they're dropping server space on cloud computing for every xbox in the wild and dedicated servers for every game.) They've also not shown any indication they drop prices on older games (in fact, again they've shown us the opposite.

Sometimes there's a good AND evil twin. If you copy-pasted Steam to XBO with all the benefits intact people would be doing cartwheels in the streets.

That's not happening.

So no, it's not the same.

Points Giant Bomb is to **** to get or even emotionally intuit. I restrain myself to the two most important.

1. Online Connection invervals are not required for enabling used games sales. Force online when a copy is registered. Force online again if a account has a selling intent - at that point it becomes "locked" from offline play. And only after that you can sell it at a licenssed retailer. THERE IS NO NEED FOR ALWAYS ONLINE INTERVALS.

2. This is the generation where the customer looses all his rights. Where he even has to lie on who qualifies as "family member" (Remember, not family members and friends). Account sharing is illegal. Will be banning Accounts if they are deemed to "misuse" the system.

What did "online pass" teach you about layering in rules after the fact? And therefore the importance of rights to a free market mechanism? It was necessary that MS even protected the user from the "possibility" of that much control. Give someone absolute control. Tell him he doesn't have to use it. But tell him that this is capitalism, son.

The embedded concepts are too much for even GB to understand. Not much hope for the future. People are ****.

I don't really buy used games or sell games, so the only part that worries me at all about Xbox One is the 24 hour connect home idea. They need to (and will) bumb that up. I just wish whoever on the xbox team that doesn't have their head up their ass had won the argument in the conference room that day.

The peculiar thing about this is that I've been a console gamer for about fifteen years, during which I've never sold a game, and I think I've only bought a second-hand game four or five times, yet somehow this is a big deal.

I do sometimes lend games (a terrible habit, by the way, because they hardly ever come back) but the deal-breaker for me is my nephew, who's seven and is currently playing my old PSX which he inherited from me with all its games. He loves that thing, his parents cannot afford to buy him a new console, or games, and I know going in that any games I buy now are just wasted money. I will never be able to pass along my games, and the consoles will stop working as well once Microsoft turns off the servers.

In principle (even if it's never going to happen) I could stick some new batteries into my Game Boy Colour and play my old carts, and - even though I don't do it - the mere possibility helps rationalise paying money for games and storing them.

So really this is just the straw that breaks the camel's back. Why would I cooperate with the company that's pushing this? To be honest, even if Sony goes with the same system I'd be less unlikely to buy PS4, because at least Sony haven't been pissing on us for three weeks and telling us it's raining.

I'm a big fan of the Xbox but I just don't think I can buy into this... If the PS4 is the same then I'll just have to use the Wii U as my primary console & stick to the PC.

My household internet goes down all the time & sometimes for more than 24 hours. My connection wont be impoved until I move homes (which isnt going to happen anytime soon).

There is an all out brawl between Publishers, Retailers, and Console Manufacturers, and we are the losers in the end. Absolutely insane.

I am mostly okay with the elimination of used games as long as there's always a persistent digital store involved (so that I never miss out of print titles; typically the only used games I buy), but that 24 hour connection definitely implies that I am hosed once they choose to shut down those servers. The fact that MS has not addressed this concern whatsoever is quite alarming. We really don't need even more obstacles to the preservation of our medium.

No thank you. I would say I'll just wait til the end of the lifecycle and pick up a console on the cheap if I want to go back and play games I wanted like I did with the PS3 this cycle around. Except, wait, if there's a new Xbox coming out how long are they going to keep the servers up for the One? And without those servers apparently I will have nothing but a shitty pass-through cable box/blu-ray player, not a gaming system.

@santa_8aby: Totally with you dude. I'm just not standing for this, and it does genuinely upset me how little most of the GB crew seems to care about this simply because it won't affect them. I mean this is ridiculous. Vinny was saying it half jokingly but we need digital rights. This is fucked, these massive companies are literally abusing us. It's time we said enough and put our foot down.

I mean in some ways I can understand why the GB crew (other than patrick) doesn't seem to care as much: their job is to play the latest videogames. Even if they really cared and wanted to boycott a console or all consoles, they don't really have a choice. I guess they could just not get them at home but that could hinder their productivity. So I can see why they're not letting it bother them.

Either way, lets start a movement. Our slogan, FUCK YOU TOO CONSOLES (that's if sony decide to do this too, if not I guess we could just say "microsoft" instead).

I don't know, Microsoft just came out and said you can share a certain amount of games with up to 10 family members. They didn't go into specifics, but it seems to me like you can just flag 10 people as family and they can access your shared games. No matter on what Xbox One they play.

If that's how it works, I hope everyone takes back their criticism, because that's fucking awesome. That makes lending and borrowing games very easy.

Well this whole Xbone thing sounds extremely confusing. :/

I just want to play games. I hope PS4 doesn't require to be online at least once every 24 hours cause that could very well be the death for me and console gaming, and this it not some hyperbolic angry fan reaction, but where I live the internet is very unrealiable. So I can easily imagine a scenario where my console wouldn't be able to connect to the internet even once in 24 hours. If I can't play a game whenever I want without being connected I might be done with console gaming and that breaks my heart cause I grew up with snes and PS1 etc. I own every Playstation and was planning to buy PS4 eventually but this just makes me sad. Hopefully is just Microsoft that sucks in the way they are handling this thing.

I really hope Sony knows better, and so far they seem to do, but I guess we just have to wait and see.

I'm not saying that I agree with the DRM, but I think the removal of used games may actually be a good thing. Getting used games can be a risky thing, and me personally I don't like the property of another person that I've never known corrupting my living space. Though I am guilty plenty of times of getting used games because of financial limitations.

The reason I think the removal of used games might be a good thing is because this will force them to keep the price of games from rising. Even more so, it may speed up the rate at which the price drops for new games. Inevitably they must make the money, and I'd rather get cheaper new games, than have used games on my table. That same crowd that got the used games because they were cheaper are still going to wait it out until games are cheaper (say for example, a HUGE crowd only buys games when they get down to 40$, thus at some point you can expect everything to even out in time, and in doing so, you wont have to have used games to do it).

If PS4 will only have the online pass system then they will be crowned as victors.

I have a scary feeling even Sony will have something else up its sleeve but I am sure they won't have that 24 hour log in crap.
