13 minutes of a chase?! are you kidding?

showing off one of the most annoying parts of the old games in your intro to the new game is ludicrous

AC3 is the only game of the series I haven't even touched since I beat it, but damnit if this doesn't look good. Probably gonna go with Watch Dogs for my Ubisoft open-world launch title but I'll definitely get this eventually.

Starting to see some small details that look like great additions. Love the idea of collectible sea shanties. Boats were the best part of AC3. I'm on board with a game mostly about the boating part with a year of improvements.

Agreed. This looked really good but didn't seem like much of an Assassins Creed game really. It is a pirate game, but they are living on the brand.

I'm sure they want to show off the best looking graphics, so I would assume this is the PS4 version.

I liked the world of AC3, I just hated all the superfluous activities that made the game bloated without really adding to the experience and the story was horse shit. This game looks really nice, but I really do hope they tighten the game up to keep only the things that make the game more enjoyable rather than unnecessary side shows. Also please no Desmond modern day part of the story, that overly self serious nonsense has been dragging down every AC game and just gets in the way of what people play AC for, exploran, jumpan, and stabban in a historical setting

Every time he tried to point out how huge the game world is, it really just emphasized how small the world actually feels to me when watching this. Nothing looks all that far away, and he seemed to be able to get point to point within 30 seconds.

Towards the end, "you can see our ship anchored off in the distance." Uh, yeah dude, it's like RIGHT THERE. Maybe 50 ft away. It's hardly stealthy just sitting in front of the temple like that, and DEFINITELY not "Off in the distance"

I'm not saying I would want full-on naval sim distances with time acceleration and crap, but I think they could've stretched out the distances at sea at least a little bit more than this. I can't imagine there will be much tension in spotting a boat about 200ft away and just being able to pull up to it within 15 seconds to start blasting away -- making ship combat about as routine as a car jacking in GTA.
But if you had to bird-dog a ship from a distance, Master & Commander style; use the winds to your advantage; gradually make up ground on them over a bit of a longer period... I don't know. Maybe that'd just be boring as shit. I'm no game designer.

As for the on-foot sections, from the map he showed when he first accepted the assassination contract, I have a bad feeling you can't explore much deeper into the island than that light-grey highlight of the port town, which was pretty small itself. If that's the case, if you keep bouncing into that dreaded Assassin's Creed Semi-visible Animus Wall, that will really kill some of the immersion for me.

I genuinely enjoyed AC3. Connor was a poor character but I still was endeared by his flaws, most main characters don't make mistakes. I can't speak to the character or Edward but it looks like more assassin's creed and that's fine by me. I will buy it and enjoy it.

I just wish they could find a better character than Desmond to justify going into these worlds, or maybe just don't justify it all and remove the animus.

To anybody whining that this was made in a year and can't be polished...it wasn't made in a year, its been in development since 2011. People blamed Assassin's Creed 3 poor reception on how it was rushed to be made in a year, that one was in development since 2010. It just goes to show how people will try to whine about anything, then blame it on things they don't understand.

Either way, this game looks great. I don't agree that it shouldn't be an Assassin's Creed game though, everything in this is unmistakably Assassin's Creed, from the freerunning to the combat.

I didn't hate ACIII. There were issues, of course, but it was still enjoyable. Also I like pirates and boat combat. It's like land combat but with boats...so I'm probably in.

Edit: Sea shanties are a collectible. The rest of the game can be terrible as long as I've got all the sea shanties.

Brotherhood was the only AC game I played all the way through. I really have no care for the on going story or anything else that is AC. That said this trailer actually had me interested. I like the idea of being a pirate and land and sea fights. Like someone above said it does seem odd that it only takes seconds to go from island to island, lots of open sea would make it more real. I thing if they dumped all the AC stuff and just made open world pirate game I would buy day one. The AC name is needed to insure that plenty of money is spent and all parts of game are flushed out.

I'm more interested than I was before, great trailer.

Did you not hear the guy say that it was important that the player could always see something to do in the distance? Would you rather it be like Wind Waker, a massive world where it takes forever to get to the next point with nothing to explore in between?

Still gonna wait for reviews but if it does well I could be 'back on board' for this......aha hah aha......ahhhhhhhhh I'll show my self out.

Why is it "hard to trust them"? They had a misstep with AC3. One mediocre game and suddenly everything they produce is garbage?

It seems I touched a nerve with the AC fans. I guess you are the same people that would defend the archaic, braindead, 'counter all the things' combat system these games still have.

I don't wanna drag this on further, you have your opinions and I have mine, this series is the very definition of Giant Bomb's take a break award.

Yes, you nailed it. I want nothing to do. Sounds glorious.

Red Dead felt big, and still had plenty of emergent events popping up to do (or not) in between destinations. I never felt like there weren't things to do, and it always felt like there was a reason to nose around in the environment a bit more to see what else they designers had hidden out there. Ditto Far Cry 3.

To me, THAT is exploring. I don't really consider it exploring to have 3 different events immediately next to you, literally within swimming distance, at all times. You're not exploring anything at that point, you're just following the breadcrumb trail of minigames and side quests.

My comment, if you'd bothered to read it, said that in this video the world does not feel or look large to me. This was exacerbated by the driver of the demo constantly pointing out how big it is -- In this video, it was not. Within about 20 seconds of leaving port, he could have reached 2 other large'ish looking islands, that hidden playa, a faction battle at sea, or a whaling event. Having stuff to do is one thing, having ALL THE STUFF immediately accessible is quite another. I'm not saying less stuff, I'm just saying more space to breathe in between might be nice. Again, it didn't help that the driver kept trying to emphasize a scale that just wasn't there. I would never refer to something that is 20 seconds away from me as being "off in the distance."

That all said, I can completely understand that in order to show the titular "vertical slice" this demo may have been intentionally set in a very dense area, and that the vistas may open up in other areas. I certainly hope that is the case. I'm a fan of the franchise, and excited about it going in a new direction.

But as it pertains to this video, I wasn't left feeling like this was sailing the open sea, exploring the Caribbean in your own pirate ship, but more putting around in a bathtub with a short-attention-span AI director throwing everything at you all at once.

I don't know, after the abortion that was AC3, I'm a little hesitant about this one. Maybe not a day 1 buy, but probably a couple months down the line. The pirate stuff does look nice, and I've been wanting a proper pirate game since Sid Meier's Pirates!, so this might just be it. I gotta say, though, the water looks beautiful, it looks like they really put a lot of work into it.

Yeah, remember all the boat battling and island exploring they've been doing since since the first AC?

So they have boat battles like in 3, and instead of exploring cities and countryside you're exploring an island. Wow, that innovation.

Neither you or I have played this game, so I can't tell you any new stuff they've added, but this stupid argument can be done for literally every game sequel under the sun. Tell me, what games are you excited for?

GTAV? So they have have three stupid characters instead of one, and instead of exploring a city you can also explore a bigger city and some forests. Wow, that innovation.

It seems I touched a nerve with the AC fans. I guess you are the same people that would defend the archaic, braindead, 'counter all the things' combat system these games still have.

Assassin's Creed combat hasn't been "counter all the things" Since AC2. They've sped up the combat a lot, and you're really not playing it right if you're still waiting for everyone to attack you first.

I don't wanna drag this on further, you have your opinions and I have mine, this series is the very definition of Giant Bomb's take a break award.

Yeah, I completely agree with you, but not for the same reasons. Yearly sequels are making people think these games are worse than they actually are. I do think they add a bunch of new stuff to each game making them more than progressively better than the last. AC3 could have been the best in the series, had it not been for a myriad of little problems that brought the quality of the entire thing down.
