That spell casting would be cool if you could use the numpad. 934 Enter BLAP BLAP BLAP

Yeah, I'd say you're right except that I didn't feel Demon Souls had any significant puzzle aspect or a spell system that required some pattern memorization.  Both of those are pretty key to making games like Dungeon Master really fun.  For the record Demon's Souls is one of my all time favorites, I just don't think it's a full replacement for the classic dungeon crawlers yet.

about the spell symbol memorization - it really helped pull me into the game.  recalling the power symbol + 2 or 3 symbol chain for a fireball or lighting bolt in Dungeon Master in the middle of a tight combat added something unexpected.  Since the combat was real-time you had to perform under pressure, including maneuvering, combat tactics and options, and recalling some spell chains.  You could que up 1 spell per character which helped.

I know people like to dismiss the spell pattern mechanic as archaic and tedious but I feel that entirely misses the point.  It's like saying Battlefield should auto-switch to melee attacks when you get in range, or you shouldn't have to memorize combos in a fighter.  There is a point in a real-time game where you cross the line from adding convenience to removing fun and skill.

Oldschool - OK
Shit dungeon design and layout - Not OK

People here seem to forget how bad going through identical looking environments was, try going back and finishing something like Wolfenstein now, from start to finish and even that had more variety in walls and nostalgia going for it (yes I know it's an FPS not an RPG, first thing that poped into my head, sue me). Later Might and Magic titles likewise did not even look as bland. I'm all for this type of game but if it has you going through dungeones like the one in this video, fuck it.

I was actually really surprised by this. I normally loathe games of this genre, yet apart from the guesswork spellcasting, this was surprisingly compelling.

Considering my childhood had more to do with Zelda, Mario, and Commander Keen with only rudimentary experimentation with games like Ultima Underworld, I'm gonna have to say it doesn't look very good. At all. Doesn't appeal to my sensibilities.

Hope you guys love the shit out of it, though.

For those interested the Japanese Wizardry that was recently released was specifially.... "Wizardy: Labyrinth of Lost Souls". It is available on PSN only. It is pretty solid too if a bit light on the story, difficulty ramps up well also. It starts fairly simple then gets sort of rough, then turns into every battle end in you dieing if you screw up.

A somewhat sensible difficulty curve? That's almost blasphemous for a Wizardry game. The last western developed part in the series, Wizardry 8, threw you against some serious shit in the first few minutes of the game. If you didn't flee/avoid a lot of fights you'd have a hard time even reaching the first city in the game. And then of course, everything scaled with your level, so you'd always encounter enemies at least 5 levels above you. I love that game, but it was ridiculously unfair.

Wizardry 8 was amazing, but it was also incredibly and ridiculously hard sometimes... a lot of times, actually. But man, I loved that game/series so much. I think I might just reinstall it, actually :)

@fisk0: I just installed my Wizardry 8 CDs yesterday. Amazed I still had them around. Time to take a serious crack at it!

Just don't forget to run the game in administrator mode, otherwise you'll get lots and lots of odd glitches (the game will still work, but most items, and some monsters and NPC's will have disappeared).

holy shit. THANK YOU.

I love the look, and old school throw back, but the minimalist atmosphere is killing it for me. Needs some music, or ambient sounds to give the game some presence,  Also the sound FX are marginal at best.

100% Agree. Loving this!

The genre never fully went away in Japan though, as far as I know they still make lots of Wizardry games over there (one of them supposedly was released in the west this year, but it's not out in Europe yet), it's rare to get releases over here anyway, at least if they aren't for cell phones, like Doom RPG.

First of all, thanks for the info! :) Now, I take it there aren't many (if any) being made for the PC in Japan, but do you happen to know of any? Pretty please with sugar on top...? ^^

I don't think many of the japanese games are for PC anymore sadly, I actually think most of them are still PlayStation 2 exclusives, though I guess more and more is coming out for PS3. I think there have been a few episodes of 1UP's Retronauts and Active Time Babble where they've been talking about the modern japanese dungeon crawlers. @fisk0: Depending on your requirements for these kinds of games, there are a decent number of them out there. I know Class of Heroes on the PSP is pretty similar to what I played of Wizardry and there are others that do unique things of their own in SMT: Strange Journey and the Etrian Odysssey series on the DS. Those have all come out in NA and are on region-free systems, so anybody can get them if they're interested.

Personally I don't own any of the current hand helds, so I meant for consoles or PC's (there's a new Wizardry game out on US PSN, and awaiting release in the EU), but as 3DS and PSP are getting into affordable price ranges, I might pick one up and then it's good to know there are first person dungeon crawlers available on there as well. :)
