SO FINE, ROCK U LIKE A PORCUPINE!!!!

great review!

Posted by FuzzYLemoN

I think a 3 was a bit too harsh. The tone of the review made it sound more like a 4.

Posted by BaconGames

I read on the site that because of the 5-star system, games of varying quality get put into the same score category and this is one of them.  Comparing other 3-star games, the complaints and the video review I don't think warrant that score.  Then again 4-star games aren't perfect either, and I think that's where I think the rating was too harsh (and some of the text review as well).

I think removed from the Double Fine flavor, the gameplay is still pretty good but somewhat flawed.  Add in the Double Fine stuff, and I don't see where that much criticism comes in.  I think there's an element of dick riding Tim Shaeffer and also being a rebel and criticism him for the love he gets.  That's what I see in the reactions.

That and some people are again only taking reviews and demos at face value.

the demo was pretty funny, I might get this on the cheap later in the year.

I'm pretty surprised this got 3 stars. definitely the only review on G.B. I'd have to disagree with.

I'm a bit disappointed to see the huge emphasis on the RTS-style gameplay near the end of the game, as that just sounds out of place for this game. I could see the Overlord-style mechanic working well, but going beyond that seems to get out of control and over complicates what should be a fairly simple game. I never got why this game had to have multiplayer and making the single-player campaign as a basic tutorial for the multiplayer seems like a bad move that seemed out of place for Tim Shaffer's style of story-telling and the types of games he makes.

I don't really like labeling it as an RTS. You will probably only spend 1-2 hours with that aspect anyways.

He obviously hasn't listened to Tenacious D.

Also I don't see why you have to be an adolescent to enjoy some badass cover art.

edit: Also I disagree with not having any motivation to explore the world. I've been spending the last few hours going around searching for the hidden metal tracks. Though if you don't like heavy metal, you won't enjoy going around just listening to the awesome soundtrack, I suppose.

Yeah, all of you complaining and talk about how it's a minimum of a 4/5 without having played it ... That's why you don't get to review video games.

Ryan, your review is spot on.

pretty shameful ryan,
to give brutal legend 3/5, deserved 5/5.
if not full score, at least 4/5.
shame on you.

I can't stand Jack Black either, but it seems that he did a good job with the voicework for this game.

Wow! I'm flabbergasted. I just logged in to make a comment concerning my prediction of Ryan's score for Brutal Legend, assuming he would give it 4 STARS by the sound of his impression from the podcast. And I was going to   go on and say that Brutal Legend is a perfect example of a game that demonstrates the flaws of a 5 star system, because Brutal Legend isn't as great as some but better than 4 STARS. And now I see that Ryan has completely lost his mind as i'm starting to feel Jeff is as well. There are definitely awkward moments with Brutal Legends game mechanics, but the overall product is exceptional. If Ryan and Jeff were in charge of the gaming industry, there would be even less variety than there is today (yes, I'm aware, they have some quirky interests, but overall have little interest in artistic flair. Yes, again, I'm aware of their few quirky interests but their game reviews speak to the contrary). I'm terribly disappointed in this score, and have sadly lost another game reviewer I thought I could trust. Though, for what it is worth, I respect Ryan's honesty. I'm just frustrated with the negative affect the Personal Tastes of Online Game Reviewers have on consumers' purchases. One day, all we'll have to play is Maddens and Modern Warfares. Which may be good, but I like some variety.
P.S. I'm glad I paid full price (on an unemployed budget) for Brutal Legend, because Tim Shafer's vision and games of this nature need all the support they can get; or soon they'll be gone. Those of us who have been playing games for 20+ years know that there is already a huge dearth in variety, and it'll only get worse if consumers don't vote with their wallets. I've already decided to only buy "artistic/creative" games at full price, and buy the juggernauts like Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 as used games (although A.C. 2 is very creative, it will sell well).
And in response to HBK who said that "artistic flair" doesn't make a game "good":
Yes, a game needs to "play good" and not only be "creative" to be a good    game. But if only the tried-and-trues like Modern Warfare, Halo, and Madden review well and sell well, the people who green light projects will only green light those types of games. Marketers look at theme, not gameplay. Gameplay makes a game "good", but theme is what sells the publishers; and if interesting or "creative" themes don't review or, especially, sell well, games of a similar nature will not be green lit. It's sad, and frustrating, but the business minded people are pragmatic and choose the best bet: that which has already sold well. So, to nurture an interesting concept to the point of becoming the entire (and the most rare of games) package of great design and gameplay, one must be forgiving of minor flaws to allow it to grow to such. Games can be a great escape, but they're leaning more and more on the simple and easily understood. I love playing Modern Warfare, but the experience is not an escape, it's more catharsis than anything; which is good, but people need rich and wondrous worlds to get lost in, because our own can be a bit harsh and overwhelming at times. Games that offer the best escapes seem to fare the worst (please do not mention any Star Wars or Lord of the Rings wannabes as argument. They're as tried-and-true as Halo and Madden).

hurmm interesting, I'm sure if I'll get it yet... probably just not right now... combinging different game genres doesn't not work out that great though.

I'm surprised with the split between reviewers and gamers with this game. Personally I'm extremely enjoying the game, even with its many flaws, and most people here seem to be saying the same thing, just some more vocal than others. Strangely, the thing that is annoying me the oust with the game is the framerate (on the PS3 anyways) since its terrible. I'm not going to argue with Ryans opinions, but it's also a massive help to love metal.

That world looks Fantastic IMO.

How can you make the judgement call that a review is spot on when you haven't even played the game front to back?

Though I do think the game deserves a 4 Ryan definitely had some good points in his gripes with the game.

Well written review Ryan.  Was interested in the game because of the Schafer hype, but confused on what the game was actually having you do.  Would have rented it, maybe even bought it, if had been an iterative action game (using mechanics we know that work and are fun) in a signature Schafer world--which I thought it was going to be until last E3 where I first learned about the multiplayer.

Hell I didn't know about the fact that it was open world until the reviews came out.

Damn shame the gameplay has an identity crisis while the world it's supporting looks like a lot of fun--if a little weird. (Read: I'm not metal in most any sense of the word)  Can't comment on the score though, seeing as how I haven't played the game.  I'm inclined to agree with Ryan though, I trust that he knows what he talking about.

This review is really fair. I mean, yes the appreciation and dedication towards the metal genre is amazing and worthy of praise, but it's still just a game.
A game which has a lot of weaknesses to it and becomes monotonous after the 4-hour campaign. Just because it does highly revere metal rock, doesn't mean it should get a good rating.

Thanks for the honest review. I was afraid you guys would talk about the game like it was the second coming. I was hoping all of the game was a GOD of WAR, Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry type of game. FInding out  the real meat is a RTS is kind of a downer.

Good to see a Ryan review!

I don't see anything wrong with a 3/5, even though I'd like to have seen it score higher, There's no denying that the side missions do get kinda stale quick.  I'm not quite certain what his beef with how it controls is, however. I mean I can certainly see someone being disappointed because they found the game too easy, but I never felt I was working against the controls to get through the game.

All in all if you like the greater body of Tim Schafer's work there's no reason at all I can see you not liking this game.  On a game play aspect it's maybe not as face-meltingly awesome as we hoped it would be, but its completely  serviceable, and if you're way into metal you'll probably just enjoy wandering the world and seeing the sites even when your kinda bored of the repetitive side missions.

Still good enough to buy.

This game is a bit repetitive, but it makes your smile and at the end of the day is what gaming is all about.
Have fun, if you like Metal this is a game for you.

Edited by day2daze

right, so a "stunning world full of details" doesn't offer up enough motivation to go out and see it? Um, isn't that an oxymoron?

...but a bunch of uninspired, mind numbing mini-games would have alleviated that?  I'm glad they're few and far between in BL;

im glad eddie riggs isn't another kratos 'hard-ass' with 80000 different cool looking thingys, you know really capture that button masher bad ass in you;

i'm glad we got a gorgeous, delightfully funny world to explore, in a day and age where the most delightful thing you might do in a game's universe is plaster it's walls with liquidized feces.

All I wanna say is that I haven't had a game this year to pull me in like this. Exploring the world is awesome. Some side quests are repetetive but I found them fun, even the racing odley enough since I tend to hate that. The rts to me feels deep and action packed and I love the frantic feel of it all, and controlling units slicing demons with your battleaxe while playing face-melting guitar solos haven't gotten old for me yet. I think it is a super awesome game

I have never heard Ryan talk about this game without saying the word "reverence".  Perfect term, I just noticed.

Posted by FrenchFriedFool

As much as I disagree with this review, I respect Ryan's honesty in giving his review and not caving in to the amount of hype this game has garnered.

I want this game just for the one liners to use as ringtones on my phone. "Come on, fuckin sick of you guys."  I so want that!  I'd love to get this game for gaming sake, but for me, the RTS portion blows it.  Amazing how one element could totally ruin a game that I was hyped for.

Yeah I was trying to figure out why the framerate was so busted in the video review because I've been playing the PS3 version and it runs fine. Then I saw the icon for pressing LT and I figured it out.

whats a  LT ?     and the video video reveiw here might be on a 360  not a ps3...came out on both...i just popped the game in my ps3  and played it...didnt have to do a thing...works great   looks fantastic   no framerate issues but i have noticed after playing for hours this ps3 gets hot and lags  so i shut it down  let it cool down   and start hammering on the controls again...lol...these new consoles need better cooling . they will run better and last longer...fans suck, water cooling should be the in thing and overclock the shit out of these chips and ram...sony and microsoft sould give you an option to upgrade your system..suits dont think i guess....lol...rock and roll dude....but the bluray player is sweet and old dvd movies upscale nice...this is another reason i bought a ps3

Good review. I kinda got into this place where I just zoned out during the extra missions (I'd even watch stuff in the background), but the plot and writing are DEFINITELY worth the trip.

Posted by RichieJohn

I've got to about 80% and finished the story and I'm still loving just exploring the world trying to find all the serpents and hunt the animals.
There still seems to be sections of the map that i've not even seen.
I hope it get's some sort of story DLC like an Epilogue or something.
I really enjoyed the RTS stuff as well once you get the hang separating out your troops and knowing what they can handle and when to step in.
Great game but my only criticism is that the end felt a bit rushed and they could have done with more of a campaign against the Tainted Coil.

Posted by Moeez

I don't know why normal gameplay ramping up into RTS style sounds like a bad thing? It sounds like the natural evolution, if you want actual WARS in an action game.

Another case of reviewers not getting their audience? That we're too stupid to not adjust to some more complex gameplay than most of the games in a genre?

Great review! thanks a bunch

Edited by detectivepbert

This game is sweet.  I played the demo on 360 and immediately decided to purchase it but for PS3 (I like 360 but I'm not really into shooters so usually like to play PS3 -- with the exception of ME2 of course).   The point of this game is to be light and fun to the extent that its sort of a spoof both of heavy metal and also of video games.  But not a spoof in a bad way but a great homage to both gaming and heavy metal.  I think adventure games are sort of silly as a genre in general, so I figure might as well play things like this.  If I feel like playing a challenging game with deep gameplay theres tons of those, but this is a nice break from something like Dragon Age Origins.  I definitely laughed out loud at several points so far and  I'm only about 30 minutes in.  Like when Jack Black orders his headbangers to "go completely nutshit on that thing!".  Come on, its hilarious.
