They are probably doing this to gauge the marketplace for another doom game and to also remind people that doom is still a thing.

Waiting for XBLA to update so I can grab this. >.< Also, what's with all of the Id hate here in the comments? Id makes quality stuff. Sure they take forever to put games out (like a lot of other developers do), but I personally haven't disliked something they've released. I even enjoyed Quake 4 at the time.

-edit- Unless this is a disc-based game in which case sadly it'll need to wait.

I really, really liked Quake 4 as well. The MP was kinda eh, and it was fucking stupid that they spoiled the game on the back of the box, but damn that campaign was awesome! Then again, that wasn't an Id game, it was made by Raven, so why mention it?

Also Rage was pretty fucking terrible

@civid: I strongly disagree about Rage. The story wasn't there, but the combat was fantastic and the game was quite impressive from a technical perspective. Having something that looked that good run at 60 fps was quite the feat, regardless of the pop in found on consoles.

I really enjoyed the combat too (at least to a point), it's just that it didn't seem to be the main focus of the game. This should've been a straight-up old school shooter, because those are the kinds of games that we need in this day and age and the kinds that Id has proven they can do really, really well. We don't need another FPS/RPG-ish mess, without a clear focus or goal. And other than the pretty graphics, smooth-ass framerate (I have to admit, I liked that part of the game) and great combat-mechanics, everything else was crap. The late game enemies would just stand still and pound you full of bullets, most of the items you could craft were virtually useless and the god awfull minigames and "open-world"-ish driving sequences were too big a part of the game to ignore.

Got it on pc, doesn't work. Runs at 1fps lol. Then again I do have a Radeon gfx card and Doom 3 has historically had problems with Radeons.

Doom 3 STILL looks fucking amazing. The engine and the art direction, as well as the lighting, continue to make it a game with a lasting look.

Also, it was a kick ass game. I am a proud member of the Doom 3 Defender's Club.

The quality of Doom 3 is beside the point, really. It was a horror game, when the originals were pure arcade action games. That means it failed to please the fanbase before it was even finished. I'm not saying it was a bad game at all, I'm just saying it was the wrong genre to really appeal to the Doom audience.

Still, as someone who creates Let's Plays of videogames, and noting that people seem to prefer horror games for such things, BFGE might make for an interesting video series, so I'll be keeping an eye on it.

Word on teh internets is that the PC version is pretty poor. Has no graphics options and actually looks worse than the original version could with config file tweaks only. People are describing it as a poor console port, which is rather ironic given it's origins.

@civid:

Your assessment of Rage is spot on. Id should be making what they're good at making. In other words, what we now call throwback/old school FPSs. That being said, I'm glad their next project is Doom 4 (and then give us Quake 5!).

I also want to chip in that I loved Doom 3. The on-paper narrative was not well done, nor were the PDAs memorable (Doom 3 was no Half-Life or System Shock 2). However, the actual gameplay was great. I think Doom 3 is the best throwback shooter released since the genre started changing. I also enjoyed the atmospheric noises and shadowy corridors. (I do wish the game had had more Hell, though.)

I think if id had ditched the attempts at serious narrative and just made a pure throwback shooter, Doom 3 would have been received better.

I gotta agree with you. Doom3, as well as other games that copied its graphics style (F.E.A.R.), still look wonderful. Games today use blurry, jagged shadows and I'm wondering why the hell that is the case.

Look at it this way: For $60 (or was it $30?), you're getting Doom 1, 2, 3, Resurrection of Evil, The Lost Mission, AND they even went back through and tried to "fix" Doom 3, which is something they probably didn't have to do. Most companies, when they produce HD updates like this, just put the game out verbatim. iD should be commended for admitting "Yeah, Doom 3 had some problems, and we'll see what we can do about that."

Whether or not those improvements matter remains to be seen, but I appreciate the gesture, at least.

Fucking rip-off! Was excited to finally get this on 360 just to get a broken version with barely any options or settings that matter. Installing the 7.2GB game onto the hard drive will block you from being able to load up DOOM/DOOM 2 from the main game select menu. Only afterwards to discover all deleting the install did was let me boot up the fucking XBLA versions of these games which i've already owned and fully completed, achievables and all! What a fantastic package this turned out to be!

Edit: Come to think of it, Valve went back and added achievements and HD resolutions for free didn't they? :-/

Doom 3 had its moments. Unfortunately, all the reasons against it are out there. Like that campaign.....far too long. The title still doesn't make any sense. You are releasing a Doom collection but referring to it as Doom 3.

That's some Sega compilation naming conventions on display!

I *loved* Doom 3. Lights off, sound up, totally intense. One of the best game experiences I've ever had on the PC. Considering I can get this for £14 on Amazon, I'm going for it.

DooM 3 was a good game. But I'd still prefer DooM 4 to be more like the originals and less like horror.

As for this... it's been pretty clear for months that the original game + enhancement mods released by the community are far superior to this BFG Edition.

I've been playing it on PS3 and is it just me, or is the game throwing more dudes at you? I don't remember quite this many firefights in the original DooM 3.

Oh lord no! Doom 1 and 2 are perfect, just the way they are.

Hehe, I know, right? Hell, before Bethesda bought Id, I thought they were actually part of Activision!
