Techs/Team combos? X-strike? Cyclone? Reminds me of a modern Chrono Trigger.

I have never really gotten into JRPG's since I wasn't exposed to them until after their golden age, but I may have to give this a chance. That music really pulled some strings.

It certainly seems mechanically similar to Chrono Trigger, but not sure if it can compare to the tone of the game, a combination of upbeat and goofiness that made it very fun to both play and witness.

I am so very excited for Square to develop traditional RPGs again. And that music is just gorgeous.

I don't know why, but I loved the narrator in this trailer. Wish she had more to say.

It looks pretty good. But what I'd really like to see is a full, epic 3D remake of Golden Sun (1&2 combined), with a full symphony soundtrack. Pretty please.

When I read 90's era RPG from Square I was expecting something like Secret of Mana with real-time battles, enemies visible on the screen, little tufts of grass on the land... this looked more like a 2000's RPG with random encounters and poorly designed 3D worlds. Meh, just give me another Sacred game, or something with 16-bit graphics.

Kinda reminds me of Grandia 2. Minus that awesome Grandia combat system.

I watched this trailer and there was no sound for some reason and I just though you all were very funny people.

Oh wow, July 19th? Awesome. I've been more or less desperate to play something old-school like recently. Unfortunately I don't like the FFIV remake's chibi art and FFVIs remake art looks blurry and distracting. This fits the bill quite nicely.

I feel like I should be more excited for this than I am, but I guess we'll see. Battle system does seem pretty good.

For those curious, I Am Setsuna was explicitly made to be like a "spiritual successor" to Chrono Trigger and the SNES Final Fantasies. The team is a bunch of big fans of those classic games, and they wanted to recreate the feel of a late SNES/early PS1 era JRPG while telling their own story.

From talking to people who have played it, I Am Setsuna is very good and reminiscent of Chrono Trigger gameplay-wise; though the story itself is focused a lot on sadness. Yet, this trailer makes it seem darker than it necessarily is. It isn't one-note sadness. There are light moments along with the dark, similar to many games of that era. By all means sadness plays a big part, but it isn't like it's only dour. It is apparently quite fun while being emotionally heavy.

I hope more folks check it out. It's even coming to Steam, too! If you like classic JRPGs, this seems like a game to support. :)

I love setsumas. They're delicious.

But really I'll probably pick this up, however I feel like there are a lot of indie made jRPGs nowadays that have done things with the genre and explored it in super interesting ways while Japan made jRPGs have just been the same damn things for the past 20 years. You used to get some interesting outliers like the Shadow Hearts series, Parasite Evil, or Wild Arms, but any long running out of Japan just devolves into anime tropes.

Not sure I'm very much into that voiceover. Sounds a bit too much like a "let's player" just reading the narration or something. Not sure why, but it just sounds unprofessional to me.

The soundtrack is great, though, and the visual style looks pretty appealing, and evokes the PS1 era of JRPGs, although perhaps that's not for the best, as it doesn't seem quite as polished or jaw-dropping as some of the finest crafted pixel art on the SNES was... if they were going to go polygonal, I'd like it to try and be as detailed as possible like that old pixel art was.

Anyway, I think I'll check this out, but my overall verdict on it will likely come down to the story & the characters. Let's hope they're voiced better than the narration in the trailer here.

Graphically it looks like a 3DS game. I thought it was a 3DS game but it is for PS4 and Vita. I like the art style though.

Maybe it is a good time for this style of RPG. Current styles have been around for some time, it does start to get somewhat stale.

Mate, it's a Grandia 2 style game, awesome, this is the kind of retro JRPG I want to see.

I found out it was coming out and got really happy. I then found out that the vita version is staying in Japan, and my happiness was pretty strongly diminished.

@saispag: it was released on vita here in Japan, so if you want to play it in Japanese that's an option. I don't think there are any current announcements on an English vita port as of yet.

It's a really fun game, but I don't think it's as good as CT. Which is nigh on impossible to be fair, just don't try to compare them and I think people will really like it.
