Final Fantasy XIV Shows You its PS4-Specific Features

I've been a Kingdom Hearts fanboy for years. It's just embarrassing, the number of arguments I got into with friends that ended up with me being referred to as female genitalia or a bundle of sticks because I refused to denounce my love for the series. I waited patiently while Square Enix brought out Kingdom Hearts. games for every mobile device ever released over the past decade, as opposed to Kingdom Hearts 3. I cheered when they announced the game was in development last year. I promised myself I'd buy a PS4 when the game came out. Then, they completely and unapologetically screwed me over for a relatively small amount of money, just $10, and now the thought of giving them money disgusts me. Screw Square Enix.

@saga: Except we really aren't in the minority. The games sold really well and reviewed pretty well, I think people who like games these days don't really flood message boards to declare it, that or it didn't do well with the specific subset of people who do spend time on message boards. Though XIII-2 did sell less, that isn't exactly that surprising I think. It still did pretty darn well here. Tastes are going to vary, but for me they are squarely somewhere in the middle of my FF rankings. Not as good as VIII or X but better than like XII.

It's sorta like how its the cool thing to hate on Blizzard games, especially in MMO communities, while WoW remains anything but a total failure.

Or did you just mean FFXIV was bad? Sorry if I misunderstood your position, though with the reboot I think that is hardly the case either.

We also definitely need more console games that allow you to just plug in a keyboard and mouse as control options. Why the heck not?

That's the real tragic thing about SE over the last decade; the complete inconsistency across the board.

The team working on FFXIV right now is pretty damn solid. They're actually open and communicative with the playerbase in a way that SE has never been before.

But they've also got a team pumping out the most hideous and broken iOS ports and remakes at the same time with seemingly little oversight. It's very strange that the company as a whole would allow that to happen; you can never be sure anything with their name on it is even a functional product anymore.

It's too bad that I've got a personal vendetta going against Square Enix over their failed support of their Android release of Chrono Trigger (broken since last July), their non-existent attempts to keep fans up to date on possible repairs or fixes of the game, and their piss-poor customer service (I e-mailed them my Google purchase order for a refund under the subject "What's Square Enix Doing To Fix Chrono Trigger On Android?" and was told my Apple purchase was nonrefundable -- thieves and idiots, that's what the company is). Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts are going to be used purchases for me until I am either given my $10 back or I can finish Chrono Trigger on my phone.

If that was true, then why they went on with the story like that? I mean, the stuff still sells enough that they are making sequels.

How the FUCK is playing with K&M a PS4 Specific feature?

@saga: Except for the part where 14 is actually good. Granted, 13 and the spinoffs are terrible, but this actually does something right.

why is Alex getting so much shit? He is right. The FF series have been disappointing for years. Stop being a fanboy and understand that if you believe that the latest FF games were any good then you are in the minority.... not the other way around.

Playing as Lalafell makes the game at least twice as fun. I mean, look at them.

Now you can play a game so bad, it had to be re-released, on your fancy new games box.

If nothing else, the music is still fantastic.

after playing FFXI for years and years and then this beta on ps3 I was really sad how much this game sucked.,

@fawkes: Good point! I had admittedly forgotten about that since I didn't have any plans to revisit the PS3 version once the PS4 version was out.

The core difference is that one character has access to every single class (which can then specialize into jobs). Aesthetically, it is very old school Final Fantasy-esque (FFIX, Tactics, etc).

Oh well, it does have the MMO grind and kinda generic "kill X amounts of Y and bring back their Z" quests, but it's also got the FFV job system and combat that feels alright on a gamepad. I rather like it, playing it on PS3 right now, but since it's cross platform (and seems to have a shared subscription across all platforms, you only need to buy the client for each), I'll pick it up on Steam when it gets released there, and possibly PS4 down the line too.

This new player sucks.

Why would they resist? The series has been less than fucking garbage lately. It's not their job to make you feel good about the shitty series you like.

Probably? There's good writing and story without the usual MMO grind, fun mechanics, and the franchise callbacks are from the earlier titles.

Nope! Like I said, my MMO experience is basically nothing. Played ten minutes of WoW once upon a time. And a game called Nexus. I've played all the Final Fantasies apart from that up to XII.

Really enjoying this game. First MMO that's actually grabbed me long-term, lot of great and funny writing in the questlines and such too. Plus I just really love the world design and combat mechanics.

That said, I'm content sticking to the PC version. But I know quite a few people who play on PS3 and apparently the control system is pretty solid all-around, so that's cool. More ways for people to play and enjoy the game is always a good thing.

@mormonwarrior I've tried a lot of MMOs and this is the first one I've really enjoyed. I had a little fun with SWTOR but it didn't hold me for long. That said, I do still have quite a bit of affinity for the FF "style", so if you've fallen out of love with that then perhaps it won't click with you as much. I'd say it's worth at least a look, though.

I like how they call the Vita a "PlayStation 4 Vita System" as if the Vita is only an accessory to the PS4.

I think it's funny they're selling keyboard and mouse support as a feature when I personally prefer playing the PC version with a 360 controller. XD

I am a) somebody that's never played more than a few minutes of an MMO and b) a disenchanted old Final Fantasy fan. Is there anything in this game for me? Would I enjoy it at all?

The best writing in an MMORPG since Rift, this game, in my sci-fi loving opinion. I choose to not let my easily tempted brain fall into giving all spare time to an MMORPG again though. Highly recommended for fans of the fantasy-FF style and those curious of MMOs.

And all I wanted was a Flappy Chocobo game
