japan has lost its mind,  does every game now need to be monster hunter?  I also find it funny that all of a sudden "Create your own hero" is a selling point

Obviously not, but when you sit down and look at the fat stack of money Capcom makes with that franchise, its hard not to try to do something like that. And in Japan, it paid off; right behind Monster Hunter, DQ9 is the mobile game, if not video game period, of choice.

The fact that this is Dragon Quest does give me higher expectations than I usually have for other games.  I just hope that playing single player is the main focus, because I don't really have anyone to try out the co-op with.

  Wish I had the enthusiasm to play another dragon quest game just can't take anymore of that stale shit gameplay. It was fun in the late 80's and early 90's but a fucking torture to make it through when you play modern games all the time.

Some of the whippersnappers could do to be reminded that DQ1 was the first JRPG as we know them now. There weren't any before that... "before" that was Wizardry and Ultima (and Black Onyx). Nintendo Power had to train us about what the hell this game was, barely 20 years ago. 
Spinoffs are one thing, but the Enix in Squeenix ain't gonna let the grandpappy of them all fail. DQ can sell a million by accident and the rest is cake.
 
Man, that Black Onyx page could use a Wiki Task...

The masses require an amount of bullshit and crappiness in their product/servie this is nothing more than another sign of that. Of that, and the lack of evovlution in japanese videogame development, whichever genre, they suck at every one.

DQ games have never been very story heavy. DQ7 and 8 were closer to the JRPG standard, but still had nowhere near as much story as your average Final Fantasy game. Also: Silent protagonists instead of typical JRPG whiners.

@Hailinel:  what i mean is i liked playing it on a console with lush toriyama environments and fantastic audio for a fantastic soundtrack. they could have at least put it on wii or something. what i've seen on it on ds I don't like. imagine if square decided suddenly they were gonna put final fantasy XV on ds or something. i don't think the fans would react well, considering it relies on graphics etc. dragon quest isn't that different really, besides its cartoon toriyama style.

Well, Dragon Quest X is a Wii title, so there you go.  I'm at least going to give DQIX a go before I pass judgment on it, though.  Even the DS remakes of IV and V were very good in their own right even though they're graphically not as advanced.

According to the previews I've read, there are no random battles.  Enemies are on screen ala Chrono Trigger.

Actually it has been in out Japan for a few months now.
Still pending for a release date in the west, but can take well up to like 8 or 9 months as with the previous ones iirc.

Well, since this game is the best selling game in the series, it seems the fans really liked it. What's more, the critical reaction has been very good.
 
Believe it or not, people play games to play games, not look at things. Moving DQ9 from PS3 to DS might just be one of the best decisions they could have made.
