Here's That Crazy Ass Metal Gear Solid V Trailer Everyone's Talking About

So which part of this do we want to try and wrap our heads around first? My vote goes to the flying fire whale.

@chose: You sound like a pretentious cunt. MGS' previous sales prove that it has more than just a niche fanbase outside of Japan.

It's funny to see how much people are into the whole Metal Gear storyline and lore. Snake might be a cool character to some, but beyond that it's not worth thinking about it, less caring about it. Maybe it's the Japanese childish anime culture, but it probably doesn't resonate to many gamers over sixteen. Kojima should mature along its audience if he wants to remain relevant, unless Konami is satisfied with not having success outside their small island.

Insanity is easy.

And yet gets you so much more in terms of a response. What do you think that says about the BF4 trailer?

"The Phantom Pain" and "Ground Zeroes" sound like chapter titles.

...and hopefully, not including David Hayter in the pre-release footage is just Kojima's kind of joke.

One clue I've spotted is toward the end, but don't know how it relates. When the female voice reads the title "V has come to." it sounds slightly German, as in "Wie hast komm du?", which I think means "Why have you come?". My German is pretty rubbish, though.

I don't think so. "Wie hast komm du?" is not a valid sentence in German. "Why have you come?" would be "Warum bist du gekommen?". As a German I can say that it doesn't sound German at all.

The trailer is completely nuts though. I played MGS4 and enjoyed it but I don't really give a shit about the fiction so if they take it in some weird fun direction I'm totally okay with that.

So, Ground Zeroes was just a working title?

Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain are Tanker/Big Shell.

For everyone wondering this is the big boss mgs3/peace walker timeline not the 1,2 and 4 stuff.

This trailer already seems to be tripping balls, but there's another thing to take in mind. The Big Boss / MGS3 timeline ends in MG1 and 2. If they're time skipping 9 years here, and he was already getting old to begin with, we're fast approaching the plot arc where Solid Snake fights Big Boss. It's going to be really crazy if we play as Big Boss when the story catches up with the first games.

Timelines? Wait, am I missing something? I was always under the impression that MGS3 happened before MGS1, MGS2 happened after that and MGS4 after that. I mean, MGS3 was a prequel wasn't it? Not a spin-off in an alternate timeline?

Maybe I misread what you said though.

Story arc then. Chronologically it's all in the same universe (as far as we know). It's MGS3, Portable Ops, Peace Walker, MGS5, Metal Gear 1, MG2, MGS1, MGS2, MGS4. And you can tack MG Rising in at the end if you're feeling hospitable.

Big Boss SHOULD sound different from Snake IMO. He did at the end of MGS4. MANY years have passed since he was the young Naked Snake.

Big Boss SHOULD have quite frankly had a different voice actor from the very start. And even if he had to be voiced by one of the Snakes, John Cygan should have been the one to take the role considering Solidus is the closest to a perfect clone of Big Boss.

It's not an issue of should or shouldn't really. It seem's that it's implied that they want them to sound the same since they have listed snake's japanes VA for the game. So it's more of a Hayter problem.

I'd like to think that they're just trolling because pretty much everything up to this point about this game has been misleading but that could be just wishful thinking.

You're right, MGS 1 is after MGS3. But he's saying that If a lot of time has passed from MGS3 we might re-live the moment of Metal Gear 1-2 but as Big Boss (not MGS, but MG)

So... there's just straight up magic happening in MGS now, right?

I think all of the fiery madness is implied to be related to the coma or something... some sort of violent after effect or PTSD ect. That, or they're illusions created by the little Psycho Mantis-esque character.

or maybe the hospital is actually on fire from the attack in the phantom pain thing and he incorporates this into his coma dream?

Looked almost normal. Then the flaming unicorn-pegasus and the flying fire whale showed up. Whole lotta WTF going on here. Then again, "making sense" was never a hallmark of the MGS games ;P

@yummylee: I hypothesize that he'll be voiced by Richard Doyle, he's voiced the older Big Boss before, so it would make sense. I'd be surprised if Hayter was completely out, but who knows.

That's what I assumed initially before all of this, but it certainly didn't sound like him during the gameplay trailer. Plus, that guy is old. He's at least in his 70s by now, so I wonder if he'd be the right fit for voicing an early 50s Big Boss. Guess it's possible... there's currently so much room for speculation overall, though, concerning Big Boss' voice actor and the why behind it all. It gets to be exhausting when you try to run down all of the possibilities.

Now this seems like a Kojima game! Also, is David Hayter not doing the voice? or did big boss get a voice change operation? or maybe he just dreams he has a different voice while he's in the coma? like some sort of residual self image thing, or maybe it a result of the braindamage he suffered after being in a coma for nine years?

Anyway this seems to have the right brand of crazy so I'm in

I'm confused....but PUMPED!

Ground Zeroes is either an unnumbered PS3 game between 4 and 5. Or it's the first mission in MGS5. It was phrased oddly, so it's hard to tell which is the case.

@yummylee: Well it's not too bad then, Robin a great voice actor. At the very least they got the good acting part covered.

You say that almost as if the MGS games don't often have a stellar cast of voice actors :o

No! Quite the opposite. I said that because a change in voice actor can raise concerns that the quality might not be up to the same standards as in previous games.

I swear, it's actually kinda silly to see Miller still wearing his shades despite the current situation he's in. He's reaching Albert Wesker levels of 'never not be wearing shades'.

And yes, of all the stuff that happens in that trailer, it's the shades thing that actually stood out to me. That's kind of silly in itself, I know.

What a fantastic trailer! I am so excited for this game and so glad Kojima is still making MGS games.

This whole stuff with The Phantom Pain has also been a lot of fun. Reminds me how great all the craziness is in the MGS games.
