Looks like they got nice version of their Pudge and Void in it, as a long DotA player I have high hopes for this one.

it looks great, but i can't think many will pick this over LoL when it's free :s

having said that, of all the DOTA clones this looks the best. LoL has possibly the worst UI I've ever seen

HoN is really designed to be an updated retake of DotA, complete with exact replicas of DotA heros.  The graphics and utilities such as leaver protection are quite nice additions.  However, the thing that bothers me the most is that this is a game that has built its foundation on something else that is not their original ideas(yes, Icefrog gave them permission).  This means that I am skeptical of future innovation and creativity out of these game makers.   I'm not saying they can't come up with the vital changes needed to keep a game fresh, but I haven't seen any real proof either.

At least LoL has changed things up and created innovations to breathe new life into the genre.  These changes might be good and attract new players or they could fail misrably and turn off the whole fanbase.  But, in the end, they show the capability to stand on their own two feet with their own balancing and fine-tuning ideas.

(I am a BETA player of both games and I enjoy both.  BUT, HoN's community is a cess pool of absolute filth.)

@JukeboxJoe: Excactly what i was thinking about the UI. How can they make it that big? I think this game looks really promising. I picked up Demigod two weeks ago and the community is just aweful, also I like the game pace/mechanics of Dota better.

The community is absolutely horrible. An enormous horde of elitist assholes. That being said... the game is quite fun once you get over the INSANE learning curve. It's kind of like running face first into a brick wall... with spikes

Someone tell me if this is overkill:

  • League of Legends
  • Demigod
  • Heroes of Newerth
  •  Dota

I play 2 of those, and plan on buying the rest, overkill or not?

I'm a fan of S2's Savage and Savage 2, but the production values of this game appear to leave those other two games far behind.

@artofwar420:  The only one you need is HoN. HoN has all the characters you loved from DoTA (probably like 75% of the roster are Dota hero remakes), and some new heros that really mix things up. If your looking for a true DotA experiance with all the features you would want from a stand alone, built from the ground up, DotA game, then HoN is your choice.

The new heros are all really good, and pretty well balanced. Off the top of my head I believe theres 5 new heros, among some of the best clasic heros from DotA.

The ability to reconnect to games alone is worth it. Also, I havn't seen any real lag (beyond my PC being a PoS) when I play HoN.

Demi God is a super dumbed down DotA
Leage of Legends kinda gets it, but they still dumbed it down a bit.
DotA is great, but its being held back by the WC3 engine
HoN has all the mechanics of DotA (last Hits,  Denies on Creeps and Towers, near 1 to 1 OG DotA Map Accuricy, AR, EM, AP, SD, RD game modes) With some really great new stuff like : A great 3v3 map. A new 5v5 map. Anti-Leaver systems (auto item and gold distribution when some one leaves. Having a DC be shown on your personal stat record. Total removal of a hero who did not reconnect in the time limit), Anti-Map Hacking systems, Server Side Hosting, the ability to reconnect to a game even after a full PC restart. The List goes on.  On top of all that, its being sold for $30, which is a totally fair price IMO.

Still, I want to see how LoL turns out in the end, you know being made by the Dota guys and all.

Been playing this since beta started. To answer afew questions for those wondering:

1. This games a lot better than Demigod or League of Legends. Comparing HoN  to them is like comparing Call of Duty 4 to Timeshift because they both have guns.

2. As far we've been told, it's not going to be free (at first anyway). Currently it costs a $30 one-time-fee.

I'll be honest and say that I think people should wait until S2 Games addresses as many of the minor issues as possible before they preorder. The game is great, but alot of the features that make it more universally-accessible are not in place yet. HoN is great otherwise. The absolute best advice I can give to anyone just starting a game like this is to get on the forums and read guides on specific heros to get an idea of how to play. The learning curve is completely unforgiving. But if you read the guides, you'll have a lot less problems with nasaly nerds on mics flaming you for not knowing what you're doing.

Finally if anyone wants a beta invite, I think I have a few left, send me a message.

So now there is Demigod, League of Legends, and Heroes of Newerth.  Who will make the next "DotA clone"

However I must say that out of the 3, this one looks the most interesting.

If they are making a DOTA style game the least they could do is not use the fucking WCIII engine, atleast then it doesn't look like a complete ripoff of a MOD!

HoN vs. LoL is the new fanboi war.  For some crazy reason people believe that the two games can't exist when one of them is free to play.

I could never understand DotA. As far as I'm concerned its a dumbed down WC3 where you only have a single hero to control, no base and no units. Now everyone is making legions of ripoffs? Whats going on here?

Demigod is a poor relation to DotA, so I wouldn't count it. At all.

S2, for the moment, is trying to get all their eggs in a basket before moving on to more "innovative" planes with HoN. The game is still in beta. I file at least one bug report every day. For some reason, people forget that. S2 even said it will be a while before the open beta. I'm willing to give them time. They did make Savage 1 and 2, which are innovative games in themselves.

I have been in the beta for a while and speaking as a casual DotA player, I like HoN much more, it feels very polished and removes most of the annoyances that come with playing dota.

The built in anti-leaver stuff is great and the built in voice chat has come in handy.

I suppose my only issue with the game is that when they are converting the old characters over to their new forms, the hero can end up looking very different, this might not be a big deal but its kinda sad when you get used to your hero looking one way, and suddenly its a female or a tree or something yaknow.

Also they haven't added in any of my 5 favorite characters yet X_X" So that has been sucky =P

Overall though, HoN is a much more enjoyable version of DotA and the ability to filter to only noob games is great for beginners. Although you are still expected to have a pretty decent understanding of how to play dota to play even the beginner games, but its not that tricky to get the basics.

I would agree with you to a point Spoony. Take a look at the heroes. While some of them may be consmetic upgrades, they changed the skills for some heroes and even created new ones with their own new set of skills. This is both good and bad since people familiar with Dota might not like the changes to a hero but they are also trying to keep it fresh and new and put a new spin on some of the known heroes. I think the changes they have made are quite positive overall and the system they have developed for matchmaking and leaver protection far surpasses Dota for it. I understand Dota is a mod and isn't capable but this is an outstanding feat considering that most PC games don't put any resources into disconnect or leaver issues. Unfortunately HoN's community are nothing but elitist assholes but I think that will change once they game is out and the more community-friendly crowd sets in. For anyone wondering, HoN will be 30 bucks upon its release. Preordering gets you the goodies and the 30 bucks will be well worth it, even for Dota fans.

There will be a one time fee to pay. This is said in one of the interview with thier company.
Unless they change their mind (the odds? around 0.1% i guess?).
