Was no one else bothered by the constant switching between first and third person perspective?  Or, did I hallucinate that?

True, but since this is a Deus Ex game, my expectations for gameplay are not especially high.  What's important is that the game not be an almost on-rails experience alla Mass Effect 2.  Deus Ex will live or die on its RPG mechanics and story.  Everything else need only be baseline functional.

Really liked what was shown here. Considering it's the first level, and it's only one 3 minute bit or so, I think three ways to get through an area is pretty good.

As for the graphics....they're not mindblowing but certainly not bad. The combat looks serviceable at worse. Looking forward to it.

I'm optimistic, but I have this concern, too.

Though, I would argue that Alpha Protocol became that way because they screwed up the stealth system, badly.

" What the shit is this Deus Ex game? This agent you play has a boring voice! And he looks stupid with that coat and sunglasses! And how come you don't have any real choices in the first level? All you do is shoot some guards and then talk to a guy in the Statue of Liberty. LAAAAAME! I've only played the first five minutes of this game and I hate it!!!11! "
I honestly thought the same thing the first time I played Liberty Island.

Then I discovered that the enemies are all blind and fun times were had by all.

Looks...pretty boring. Boring combat, boring approaches, boring environments.

I'm still interested in the game, I just hope future footage is more exciting.

Either switch from first to third person, stay in third, or make all the enemies blind and severely retarded.

Let's pronounce words like "path" with an annoyingly suppressed American accent -- just for fun.

That aside, this was a solid gameplay clip. I'm looking forward to this game.

3 apparent problems with this walkthrough

1. Going down ladders should always have a slide down option. This is not optional
2.Killing a guard with knives should leave blood by the bucketload, thus defeating the purpose of hiding a body
3. Doing the traditional iron sights of shooting, while a good idea, will be bogged down if you have to scrounge for ammo. This is why ammo is everywhere in bioshock

It may not seem like a big deal, but minor problems separate a good game from a great one. Still, pretty excited about Deus Ex. Loved the first two.

I'm disappointed the WHERE'S MY GUN AND SCRIPTED EVENTS BLAEURGH idiots managed to muck up this trailer. Stay classy, Giant Bomb.

I'm excited for this. I like how they aren't funneling you forward to complete your objectives in a matter of seconds, or force you to dash through a level as quickly as possible. This game looks deliberate, and methodically paced. However, I'm still not a fan of the switching camera angle, and it sounded like bad news when they announced it originally.

I hope there will be better defined pros and cons for each approach, because from this video it just looks like each method is progressively longer and more tedious than the last.

This is worrisome. All the 3rd person really breaks the Deus Ex-style immersion, and I'm really not a fan of the canned animations. Also, could they have picked a more generic voice for the main character?

YES.

In fact, in a video game of the future, this might even get you  busted. It's something Metal Gear might have thought of.  But after all that elbow stabbing, where was the blood trail? I know other games fail this, but it was rather obvious.

Do not misunderstand, I am looking forward to this game.

The different paths look a bit contrived, but it's footage from the first level,  so therefore, things might get a bit more interesting later on. Hopefully, all approaches have their benefits in terms of progression and rewards.

It looks interesting but it looks weird to have to game make the sudden switch from first to third person every time you climb a latter or stealth kill a guy. It seems like it would be better if the game was in the third person the entire time. It looks weird to not see his hands when he's grabbing something in first person.

Looking forward to this alot but can't help feel the gold highlighting could potentially ruin the sense of discovery I enjoy from a deus ex game. I have a distant memory of reading that it could be turned off though.

Wow talk about a dip of interest levels that I had built up for this wildcard after having seen the other trailers.

This is the problem with trailers that mostly feature cinematic, they present a game as being a lot more interesting as it might be. After seeing how it actually plays like, well, it looks terribly bland. Some of that is no doubt due to design of early levels, but the mechanics themselves really paint an unmistakable picture.

The shooting looked so generic that it was painful to look at, an explosive barrel, really? When Square announced that they had bought Eidos I face palmed in frustration. Then I saw the trailer for Deus Ex and I though, hey, maybe at least they got one really good studio out of that deal, alas. Guess we'll see when the game releases, but this is a terrible first impression.

Why would you need to create a route by putting a box down to climb on? Wasn't there a little ladder right next to you? Wouldn't using that ladder be more obvious than moving boxes around? Maybe you should've explored that ladder, announcer lady.

" This was slightly disappointing.. The original was TRULY open-ended, there were easily more than 3 options and paths to take at any given moment.   I don't think being violent and then all stealthy-like count as... 2 paths. I would've enjoyed this game on its own merits and I'll probably buy it anyway, but they kinda shot themselves in the foot by comparing it to the Spector classic. "
I think you might be looking through your rose-tinted spectacles a bit there. I love the original as much as the next guy but I wouldn't say that the alternate paths are hugely different. They would maybe have a few more things to do on the side that would change how it went or something, like going to talk to a dude to get a key before going in, but they could easily have that in this, it's such a short section of gameplay. It's been a while since I played DE1 but every section of that game I can think of I can only really think of 2 ways to go about it, and it mostly boils down to Go through a door or Go through a vent shaft, or go through the front door or go through the roof.

I don't want to pass judgement on this game, but I do really hate games that have that whole third/'first person shifting, I wish they'd just make up their minds really. Also I like how she's like "oh we invested a lot of effort in giving each character a unique backstory and personality" Shouldn't we really expect this of any game?

Not extremely excited by choices, but it's the first level. This is obviously only an example on how to play, not how easy the game will be.

I wonder if they honestly believe having an operative that "doesn't always get along" with his handler constitutes character depth. On top of that, this handler sounds dryer than Lambert from Splinter Cell AND more constipated than Roy Campbell from Metal Gear Solid.

What bothered me the most was how washed out the colors seem... I was expecting a lot more contrast and dramatic lightning after all that talk about black and gold. Could be just their video setup though.

So you transform inte a floating camera when you're not in cover. Odd design choice.

If you cut someone and drag him away, there should be a blood trail remaning to be detected by any patrolling guards. That's why you'd do a non-lethal takedown instead. That's the sort of detail you expect in this day and age.
