Magic Pirates Vs Presumably Non-Magic Gorillas in Risen 2: Dark Waters

I'm so fucking sick of pirates.

I don't like action RPGS, Turn based 4 life, but the setting and story look interesting. If I can ever find the time to play an RPG now that I'm working again I would be interested in setting the game to easy peasy mode and flying through it.

I played the first one and enjoyed it so I might have a look at this one as well.

@radioactivez0r: The combat in Risen starts out seemingly impossible and clunky, but once it clicks it's pretty deep. I think it might be the same for this - steep learning curve.

So if GB do a QL (initialismsssss), I hope it's with someone who's played the game for a fair bit to get a hang of it all.

Everything I have seen said it was more the flow of combat being poor and the bad animations, not keyboard vs controller.

Here's the question that I have: all of the reviews I read said the combat was relatively unfavorable...but none of them address whether it was something they played on a gamepad or with keyboard/mouse. If they played it on a gamepad and it wasn't that good, then I might consider either waiting for a price drop or just not playing it...which would be sad overall. If it's something that they played on keyboard/mouse and would be more favorable on a gamepad, then I would probably wait to see what the 360/PS3 reviews end up being like.

July 31st now? They just keep pushing this game back farther and farther.

I REALLY miss shields from Risen 1... a sword does not make a competent "shield" analogue

The pirates meets fantasy theme is pretty cool. A quick look is demanded!

@Vadren: There is dodging and you can interupt there hits, you just have to buy those skills. If you've played the Gothic games you should be aware that very little is handed to you on a plate at the begining.

@Vadren: You're kidding right? you played Gothic 1 - 3, it's improved in Risen 2 than those games, it just takes getting used to, like all of PB rpgs. This is coming from someone who's completed the first Gothic twice, the second 3 times, and Gothic 3 and Risen 1 once. It's no God of War meets COD, but it's not as bad as it was in previous games.

yeah the combat sucks .. but basicly the same suckness (not drasticly worse than risen , risen was "easier" ) , this time they just pumped up enemy hp too much .. even starting critters take like 15 hits and good luck with the first dude who enforces his might on you , this weakness in combat actually helps fuel the immersion in the previous games but i have to admit its getting a bit old:/ especially when ppl in the game expect you to be able to fend for yourself , and clearly you cant heh

All gorillas are magical.

Open world action RPG's are my favorite genre by a pretty wide margin. I enjoyed Gothics 1-3 and even found things to like about Gothic 4. I really like Two Worlds 2, and I enjoyed myself with Two Worlds 1. I especially enjoyed Risen and I thought the combat was one of the better features of that game.

Trust me when I say this: This game has the worst combat of any action RPG I have ever played. It is baffling how bad it is. It's like they took out everything that was interesting about combat in Risen, left in the bad parts, and then made them worse.

I'm sorry to say that this is the first game in a long time that I've regretted paying full price for.

I hope the voice acting is this good in-game, sounds great.

Will probably try this out. Really enjoyed the last one.

waaaay more interested in this game now. It looks like a nice change of pace from the dungeon crawlers and shooters I've been playing.

No, the pirates theme is new to Risen 2. The first one, you could side with the Inquisition, or The Don's merry band of hunters/thieves/etc.

Oh thanks, yah I knew I remembered it being a lot more fantasy than piratsy. Although this is like a mix of pirates and fantasy I think?

I'm gonna have to check this game out. Nothing I like more than when RPG's explore themes other than sci-fi or fantasy.

Played it for about 4 hours now, combat is a chore :(
