Patrick's Coffee Won't Drink Itself 08/06/2013

I'm not gonna say that something like Mario Kart will turn it around for the Wii U, but to say the series doesn't move the needle is kinda silly. The Wii game sold like 35 million copies, according to Nintendo's financials. If an eighth of those copies also sold a system (fair assumption, I think), that's a great system seller.

Just getting to this finally. I like it, Patrick! Keep it up! Also, go for an espresso machine. Then you can have tiny cup on the video. Very festive.

I can't understand why anyone would feel compelled to be dicks to Patrick. And I don't mean that in a backhanded "you don't matter" kind of way, I just mean, what the fuck is there even to be that much of a dick about? Can anyone give a cliff's notes of the kind of stuff that people are getting so pussy-hurt over that they'd bring a guy's wife and late father into it?

I personally enjoyed the Metro Last Light DLC 1 man QL Patrick did.

It PISSES ME OFF that people don't appreciate Patrick's work, and actually send him idiotic messages. I hope that these low-life scumfucks get to know the golden rule. (Do unto others as you yourself want be done unto.)

I think it is as simple as not calling solo videos Quick Looks, I'm glad you seem to have an eye on the feedback you're getting. I can only speak for myself but I certainly do watch quick looks of games I don't give a shit about just for the back and forth between the folks playing the game. That video you did with Alex Rubens could have been called a Quick Look (if they game was actually out) in my opinion. Keep up the good work Patrick.

Not many people are thick-skinned enough to read dissent, let alone take something from it.

Solo Quick Looks can be fine. I don't really see what the big deal is. Not everything has to stay the same all the time and not everything has to be a barrel of laughs for the duration of a video. I don't see the point in spinning them off into their own thing.

Patrick you should change the name of that thing you did as a "Quick Look" to "Patrick Looks at:" or something to that affect, so that way people know it's one of your videos. Becuase you're right, people come to quick looks for banter between the people in the office, not to be informed and they don't often look at -who- is posting the article. So I think you should have some identifier that tells the viewer IMMEDIATELY what they're getting into.

I'm definitly someone who goes to quicklooks to hear those guys speak at each other, and while I enjoyed your look at that game, I would have preferred if you had called it something that let me know what I was getting beforehand.

Patrick, I think you should just ignore the complaints because so far I haven't heard one valid one yet. That's not to say you shouldn't listen, but their complaints are ridiculous thus far. Quick Looks can be entertaining even if I have no interest in the game, yes, but the whole entire existence of them was to be informative to begin with and I think that's what you're doing. It's not always as easy to make it funny or the same level of entertaining as when you have multiple people on, but that's okay. Why aren't these same people crying about Encyclopedia Bombasticas? Because those are essentially Quick Looks with one person. You're the only one on the team that's going to cover some of this stuff, and there are people out there, like myself, that really value your opinion in those areas. So please don't stop doing them just because some people are being babies.

Also, if they're too dumb to read who is in the Quick Look, that's their own fault. You don't need to change the name because of their stupidity.

I think it was Polygon(?) that did a little write-up on CAH's office a few days ago, they share it with some other creative people and it seems like an awesome place to work, that should be cool for you!

I really liked the crypt world QL you did Patrick, I wouldn't worry about it.

I know 'Quick Look Ex' refers to game developers being present rather than length, but I think they end up being similar to Patrick's Quick Looks.

Patrick's videos tend to be less about MST3K style riffing and spontaneous reactions to a game, and more about showing us games we might not understand or even know about. I think the Monster Hunter WiiU Quick Look was a well-executed example while still being funny, and certainly all the Worth Playings have been informative.

So that would fit - but just calling them Quick Looks and broadening the formula some is fine too. I'm appreciative of the more varied content since E3, by any name.

I could see Max Temkin coming in for QLs since he's a pretty significant outside personality on here, and the solo QLs are fine if done really well. What you did with Brad's Rogue Legacy stream was great, too. I hope you dig EarthBound and then maybe you and Vinny could do something with it on the site later this year if you both finish it? It's a wonderful game and while it has some design issues to modern standards it still does a bunch of great things throughout and it has such an abundance of personality. I would hope you would go on to Mother 3 as well, such a perfect game.

Why isn't there a conversation about sexism in movies? It's not because the gaming community is more progressive. Quite the opposite. The movie industry doesn't face misogyny anywhere near the level expressed by gamers (not games). The movie industry isn't flawless as it is harder for women to get jobs once their looks give out, but again, that is a symptom of the viewer, not the film.

I've been an Instapaper user for years. I use it every single day.

I get that there is a very easy-to-fall-into reflexive desire to resist what complaints are asking for, but yeah, a Quick Look, as it is called, has become advertised and known to the general viewership as a specific thing. There's really no harm in switching the name to something else so people know exactly what it is (you looking at a game yourself/with your own friends/however) and are aware of what they're getting when they click on the feature.

I don't know, I rather liked it when they brought in non-GB people like Arthur Gies (I think he was at IGN at the time, so not even Gamespot!) to the quick looks, I think Patrick may find some interesting people to bring in to his QL's too.

@patrickklepek: I could have sworn that last week in some video thing you posted you spoke about not understanding naps, and if someone is tired they should go to sleep. When I was around your age I had a similar opinion, only I thought of sleep in general as an anti-productive waste of time.

If you want to change the name of your Quick Looks so people don't bitch and whine, that's fine. But please, please don't bring in strange people for banter's sake. I know they're probably your friends and it'd seem natural to you because you think they're a cool dude, but we don't know them. It's weird enough when Giant Bomb just brings over a no name Gamespot person for whatever.

I don't mind them being called a Quick Look, it's a quick look at a game. But if people care that much than changing the name doesn't seem like a problem either.

I've no problem with Scoop looks being called quick looks. It might be worth changing the name to avoid a headache, but it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. I don't watch quicklooks for any solitary specific reason; it always depends on the game in question.

I will admit, I do feel like I'm violating the duder's personal space by watching this.

@patrickklepek: Ah ok my bad, angry film nerd here :) probably left over from having to write long ass essays at uni concerning said issue. It's an interesting topic one that is extremely difficult to be objective about because the very issue concerns your very biological and sociological function within society. My opinion Films / video games should spark discussion and like you said people can choose to be put off or not.
As for solo quick looks I think you strike a good balance between fun and serious exploration of games as a medium so fuck the comments keep on keeping on etc...

I'm sorry Patrick, but that beard just really isn't doing it for me. It's gotten to the point to where it's legitimately distracting and I can't look at the video - I have to just put it in a background tab.
