@ZeForgotten: No amount of attention is enough. ;)

Also, do you have a quote of them wanting to do the theme? That's pretty interesting.

Posted by Rox360

This game's soundtrack is a cooperation between Chris Hülsbeck and Machinae Supremacy (who totally need a page on this site because they've been involved in several video games at this point). Anyone who says anything bad about it has no fucking taste in music.

Posted by Cretaceous_Bob

The music in this game is fantastic.

I am pretty sure that vocal Giana fanbase is the entirety of Germany, Giant Bomb.

Germany Do Care.

That is true.

Giana Sisters are 420 friendly. BLOWIN GRAPES YO

Posted by JackSukeru

@HulkHanson: While you have to switch between the sisters (or really it's the "forms" since they are just different versions of the Giana sister and Maria is the sister she is trying to save) there's an option to set it so you just hear the "cute" style or the "punk" style of the music.

@HulkHanson said:

I don't think I'd ever switch from the red haired one, that's pretty good "butt rock". Gimme all dat double kick.

You can choose in the settings if you want the music to change when you switch sister, or if you want one of the two soundtracks to play throughout the entirety of the game.

Doubt they'd still be up for doing that now that Patrick has called their music "butt rock" lol.

Well not me or anyone I know, eventhough we're gamers in the right age.

Here in Hungary we didn't really get consoles(or at least not people i grew up with in the late 80s early 90s), so it was C+4, C64 and PC for me. I've never played any Mario games ever, but i did play Giana quite a bit in the olden days. And it was glorious.

They would probably fart the Bombcast theme just to make it actual "butt rock" :P

Machinae Supremacy is not buttrock

Posted by xite

I've never heard the term "Butt Rock" before.

Posted by Scrawnto

Huh. This actually looks far more interesting to me than the last couple of New Super Mario Bros. games. I dig the music too.

Posted by GnaTSoL

That's not butt-rock.... Look up the word again genius.

they probably do, they also did the entire soundtrack for Jets'n'Guns, which is actually how I heard of them.

e: also, they aren't really butt rock, like at all. Closer to some kinda metal probs.

Didn't say that. Try again.

This looks pretty cool. Like an improved version of what 2D-platformers used to be. It seems like you could get a good flow through the levels if you wanted to as well.

Okay I don't wanna be that guy, but duuuuuude.

Patrick died like a million times in 20 minutes and I usually don't get annoyed by that kinda stuff but this was almost incredibly. Maybe Brad isn't the worst quicklooker at GB anymore, in terms of dying in quick looks. Brad has actually gotten a lot better at quick looks it would seem. It's probably all those breaking brad segments.

Patrick might be the new Brad.

This comment thread is now a poll of location, console you had as a kid and if you have played The Great Giana Sisters before.

Sweden, Amiga 500, Yes

Posted by bibz

Australia c64/amiga/megadrive hell yeah!

Posted by myfutureme

I may actually pick this up. Wasn't expecting to be into this game.

Posted by insane_shadowblade85

It took a while but now I totally love the term "Butt Rock".

Posted by JackSukeru

@YARN: Also Sweden, had an Amiga 500 (later an Amiga CD32) but also a regular Nintendo. I did not play Giana Sisters as a kid but tried it a few years ago and thought it was bad.

Sweden, NES/C128, Yes (Mario before Giana though)

I also like to ad I don't understand why people were so negative on this game. It looked cool, seemed to be a quite nice plattformer. I mean... why the "Who is this for?" comments? Seem like a totally OK or more game.

Posted by GalacticPunt

This is some victorious fucking Metal. Definitely not "butt rock."

I think of butt rock as 70's mainstream hard rock, i.e. Bad Company and Bob Seger.

Type "butt rock" into Wikipedia, and it re-directs to 80's Glam Metal. Shitty spandex-wearing party music.

But it's ok that he died that many times because it wasn't a FPS with a scripted moment. It was a platformer with set game design. It's different.

Like everyone else I definitely cringed every time Patrick referred to Machinae Supremacy as "buttrock."

Absolutely not.

All the more unfortunate that the Machinae Supremacy guys are probably going to watch this video.

Game needs more wubwub, obviously.

Posted by Mercanis

This game looks a lot better than I was expecting.

Posted by kerse

wtf is "butt rock"?

This game looks way more interesting than I would have expected it to be.

Posted by captainanderson

This actually looks more innovative than anything Nintendo has done with the 2D Mario series in forever. The graphics and music are great too.

Edited by AngriGhandi

I'm pretty sure butt rock was a term coined by AV Club-type media bloggers to describe the very chugging, grunting, overwrought grunge-derived hard rock of the 90s and 2000s. Bands like Creed and Nickelback, known for a certain sludginess-- particularly in their singing style, which suggests a constipated, groaning sort of discomfort.

Soaring, melodic guitar solos are more of a metal or even hair-metal (aka "cock-rock") element.

I only make this distinction because I think the term is very evocative in its original usage, whereas just using it as a substitute for "shitty rock" or "ridiculous rock" is a total waste of a really good phrase.

Holy shit, I didn't know Machinae Supremacy produced the music for this! That explains why it is absolutely fantastic.

Butt rock, my ass.

@calumlittle: Did you seriously just call people losers just because they enjoy a certain genre?

Edited by Pudge

As a fan of Metal, Patrick totally seems like the kind of person who would hear it and call it "butt rock". Also, I'm SURE this quick look will go a long way towards bucking the trend of Patrick hate. Keep on keepin on Scoops!

EDIT: Holy shit, looked up the guys behind this music, their other stuff is pretty great too. Machirae Supremacy on YouTube for those with the proper tastes.

Posted by zipperface

Butt rock? More like butt voice, because you're talking out of your butt, Patrick! Because your butt, you know, has a voice and it sounds like a butt so it's a butt voice!

Posted by civid

Could "Pulling a Patrick"* be a new term?

*When someone gets stuck on a somewhat simple block/platforming puzzle for fucking MINUTES!

Other than that great QL! Patrick always seem to have something interesting to say about videogames and he has been a breath of fresh air on this site especially with very triggerhappy duders like Jeff and Brad. It can just be a hazzle to watch him actually playing said games.

pacific northwest USA, C64 - Amiga 500 - PC, yeah I played it and it was awesome.

P.S. Thank you Europe for all the excellent arcade-style games over the years for the C64 and Amiga. and the great mags with demo disks.

The use of the term "Butt Rock" did not endear me to Patrick any further.

Of course, this game actually looks pretty neat. If I had a functional gamepad instead of the bootleg 360 controller that barely works, I would consider purchasing it.
