Why are you killing the hugbots?!?!?!

I love the idea, and I've gotta imagine that someone will snap up the guy responsible for it in a heartbeat. Here's hoping someone looks at this idea, sees the potential, and runs with the ball to make a better looking, better playing game with a bit more persistence in its gun and perk unlocks.

I got this knowing nothing about it besides the cool title. It's not bad.

Wow this looks like shit, both visually and mechanically.

@kruddman: They did it's called DoomRL http://doom.chaosforge.org/

@jeff I really think you are onto something with the concept of Rogue-Like mixed with a shooter. It would have to be made with a very universally well liked art style and with a lot of creativity though. However the concept of having multiple items/level ups/upgrades to choose from as you enter each run could allow a lot more depth to the genre. I remember playing Bulletstorm and thinking some of the combo concepts were neat, but feeling worn out on the concept after a whole game. Other shooters have also experimented with the mechanical side of things to mixed success. Being able to do those things inside a rogue like setting would certainly clear up a lot of the "wear" some of those novel but interesting ideas receive.

This looks alright. I feel like a sequel that refines the gameplay and makes the weapons and enemies more interesting could be good.

@dandead: That's not really Doom. It's some RPG rogue-like with a Doom skin

Posted by VierasTalo

There's a great indie-title called Paranautical Activity that is basically that.

That title screen looked great.

Them talking it about being FTL & Rogue -like made me interested.

Then I saw that it was an FPS game with random elements. Meh. Let me build a tower of guns and we'll actually talk.

For the record, if the next Doom was a roguelike, that would make me way more excited for it.

That's such a good idea that it will never happen.

If it looked fun to shoot the guns, i.e. the projectiles don't slowly saunter vaguely towards what you were aiming at - I'd be all for this game.

The comments section is especially kind on this game. This looks awful.

Posted by pondwhale

I feel like this would have been much better served by a lower fidelity art style. Hell, go all the way retro and make it look like Quake. Procedurally generated Quake sounds cool.

Posted by jigglemaster7

I think this game looks pretty great tbh

I think it's because it has a novel concept. The shooting lacks weight, the movement looks floaty as hell, and the art style is pretty amateur, but the core concept of a doom-clone with roguelike elements is pretty baller.

We want to believe.

I wonder how hard it would be just to make a quake mod along those lines. I'd go in for that.

In the last few minutes of this video, once they've gotten a few new guns and some badges, it sounds like they're starting to get into the game and have a good time. I would've been interested to see their experience past that point.

(Full disclosure: I'm the developer's wife.)

@aceofspudz: I dunno, I'd rather play Paranautical Activity.

I got it yesterday and I think it's fun. It's not something I can see myself getting super into but I'm sure I'll boot it up every now and then to have another go.

There are a few major issues, though. For one, the guns are not satisfying at all. The bullets move slowly and it seems like the game is just straight up missing sound effects for hits and explosions. Also, the level designs are somewhat poor and enemy placement is extremely frustrating. Not to mention it's just about impossible to keep track of all the things shooting at you, so to not take a hit in any given room is extremely hard. It needs a lot of work but there's potential here.

At first I assumed you played as a walking tower of guns. Then the 80s action music came on and it went downhill from there.

Best doom game ever made though. Probably for all time. Probably got 70 hours in it or so by now.

I'm currently making a rogue-like FPS. The fact that the comments are so negative toward this one is making me worried that no-one will like it. The upgrade system is a little more involved than this one and there are more varied enemies and stuff, but still. Makes me wanna just go the stereotypical indie-platformer route, just to be safe hah.

Posted by c_b0t

@planetfunksquad: Although the comments about Tower of Guns here are skewing negative, there are positive reviews out there, along with a ton of people on Twitter and YouTube who love it. So, don't get too discouraged based on the feedback here alone. :)

someone should just make a Doom2 Rogue-Like mod.

There are already custom wads for Doom 2 with randomly generated levels, RPG mechanics, and randomized enemies and weapons.

Man, I thought you could "shoot the tower". Bummer.

Tower of Guns... of Navarro?

Posted by INANTP

This looks like a good sale game. Wouldn't pick this up for 15$, but for half price? Looks like I'd get that much FUN VALUE out of it.

Edited by MeatSim

Dr. Turret wants to prescribe you with a heavy dose of lead.

Posted by Harrs

There's a program that randomly generates Doom levels and does a pretty darn good job of it. http://oblige.sourceforge.net/ It's no replacement for hand-made maps but it's still a lot of fun.

Posted by NeoZeon

Oh ****! It's Dr. Turret!

Posted by Sharpless

A fitting title for this sort of game, as roguelikes (or roguelike-likes, if you're an anal retentive stickler) are quickly becoming the new tower defense games -- an entertaining genre that is being driven violently into the ground by unimaginative developers hung up on the video game flavor of the month.

Edited by ExitDose

Maybe I'm just a sucker for cel shading, but I'm digging the art style. I wouldn't mind seeing something like this crossbred with Borderlands. I think the combat seems a little shallow. Maybe it opens up strategically in the later stages.

Posted by Terjay

More like Tower of Not-Funs!

Posted by Bread_Harrity

Man, I can't stand the music in this game. It's like an endless 80s band guitar solo

Posted by AssInAss

This looks really cool. I now want a QL for Drunken Robot Pornography.

Posted by i_against_i

Is this one of those free 3D games you can get from an Ubuntu repo?

Posted by dr_mantas

Looks ok, maybe.

15$ is too steep? Come on..

Posted by espm400

Anyone else catch the 'Sneakers' reference on the loading screen? Haven't seen that movie in ages, and was definitely not expecting that...

Posted by golddeathmonkey

When you climb the tower of guns you win or you die.

Posted by WateryFire

they seem a little harsh on the game considering it was made by 1 person, looks all right coming from that angle
