At the beginning of the video, your command was "xbox select"... which then brings up a list of commands in green on the screen you can say. There is no app on the screen called "go to netflix" there is however a Netflix app and prompt. Your command "xbox select, netflix" or simply "xbox, go to netflix" would both get you to netflix. However, "xbox select, go to netflix" was not a valid command.

Really into this video, great job Patrick! It felt a lot like a blog post in video form - and not just someone rambling. It felt well thought out and well produced. I would enjoy seeing more videos like this.

Feels pretty weighted against xbox one and kinect as you focus on an app developed by an outside company and represent it as a fault with the hardware itself, while you did present the bing searches afterward, the editing did not highlight their usefulness in the same manner. Couple that with the thesis of the whole video being that the kinect did not recognize your mish mashed commands at the beginning.

I would like to see a similar video piece about how it is impossible to find stuff on giantbomb.com

I love the site, but whenever i recommend it to other video game enthusiasts / web designers they would rather i send direct links cause "it is impossible to find anything on that site"

@patrickklepek That was great! I can imagine it takes some time to produce these, but I think it's worth it. I'd love to see more of these kinds of audio articles.

Really liked this Patrick. This gave me, as a potential Xbox One buyer, a clearer idea of what using the Kinect is like. And it was entertaining to boot!

That's the kind of stuff I keep coming to Giant Bomb for every day.

Good job. And you're a fellow fan of Godzilla, I had no idea. (But why would I.) I think the technology is definitely there for this stuff to work, just based on the accuracy with which my phone can take dictation.

@foodmonster:

Not really sure how you came away from this thinking it was a negative look. Popular opinion is that the Kinect is hot garbage, this seemed fair apart from that wrong command at the start( though you could argue this is part of the problem. There is no reason "Kinect, Netflix" should work and "Kinect, go to Netflix" shouldn't. It's a usability issue.)

Also you make it seem like the Netflix app was the work of a couple of Indie-devs on a weekend. It's arguably one of the strongest aspects of Microsofts entertainment package, If Microsoft wants Kinect to be a thing, it's gonna have to be universal sooner or later.

Don't know anything about that GB issue, been here quite a while so I'm not sure how it would look to an outsider, don't really know what it has to do with the Kinect though.

What? You cannot claim that Kinect doesn't work, when you are using commands that do not exist.

After saying "Xbox, select" you can only say the words that you see in green on the screen. In the case of your example, you have to say "Xbox, select. Netflix".

What you tried to do was mix two voice commands together. You were thinking of "Xbox go to Netflix" which absolutely does work, from anywhere (even in the middle of a game without seeing the Netflix tile on-screen).

You cannot say "Xbox, select Go to Netflix". It doesn't exist. It never has, and it never will. Why would it?

Please learn to use the system before claiming it does not work.

You're also suggesting that it's the fault of Kinect and/or Microsoft themselves that third party apps don't use voice in the way you'd hope.

This is the fault of the app developer. All Microsoft/Xbox-owned apps work the same way as the OS does when it comes to voice control. Netflix is not owned by Microsoft, nor was the app developed by Microsoft.

First off I total agree that the Kinect is not being utilized to its full extent and a ton needs to get done with it. That "next page" fiasco we all deal with is garbage.

When you use the "Select" command you bypass the need to say "go to". If you would have just said "Netflix" it would have launched so that one is stacking the deck a bit.

And insinuating something is a Kinect issue (by the title alone) when you have issues with third party apps is a bit misleading.

All that being said I look forward to more videos. Well done and clean.

If you're going to do a critique on kinect you should make sure you get your commands right.

You are using the wrong command in your opening bit when trying to open netflix. That isnt your fault, its Microsofts for not explaining what is required and hard coding the expected commands in. But its not a strong way to open your video.

Once you have activated select mode the command to open netflix is simply "netflix" as its in green on the screen. "goto netflix" will never work (unless it mishears you and just detects "netflix". Its either "xbox goto netflix" or if you are in select mode and its highlighted in green "netflix"

Hope this helps you out with your xbox. I find mine works 95% of the time now ive fully parsed what the thing expects of me.

More of these videos would be great! Anything I can get in audio/video form instead or writing is awesome. Reading articles is fine, but most of my content intake is while I am at work, its hard to sit and read an article and look like I am working, but I can listen to podcasts and videos all day and still be working, so any time I can listen instead of read I am all in, plus the production on the video was nice too.

As for Kinect not working, its hard to believe how bad some of this is... but for me its kind of irrelevant, I dont want to talk to my devices so I have no interest in Kinect, so I am waiting for MS to let me buy their console without it... I want an Xbone I just have a hard time spending $499 when it feels like I shouldn't have to... "buy this camera you dont want so you can get the games you do want"

Microsoft have consistently disproved those who play 'devil's advocate' for the Kinect, saying that with it being in every box developers (and MS themselves) will actually develop for it, by refusing to standardise it's implementation. The Kinect does work (mostly, for most people) but it is practically unusable because the only times you'd want to use it, ie the examples given in this video, it isn't properly implemented and so you can't! People wouldn't hate you, Microsoft, if you weren't so useless sometimes!

@davvyk: @mrxbob:

Expecting you to learn specific syntax and failing if you step just outside of it is not a path to mainstream success like the Xbox One clearly aspires to. If this kind of thing is going to work in the mainstream, it needs to do what Siri tries to do. 'Create a reminder to', 'make a reminder to', 'remind me to', and many others are all valid syntax, and you can follow them all with a place, time, or the content of the reminder, and it mostly works. (Just, really slowly. Siri is certainly not without its faults.)

@cbirdsong: Completely agree. It isnt patricks fault. Not is it the hardwares fault as it clearly works once you've deciphered its linguistic requirements. Its Microsofts fault for poorly communicating what is required and making a very narrow window for what is "acceptable" for kinect

They need to move to natural language processing like google and to a lesser extent Siri. My GF wrestled with kinect at first but now loves it in the living room. She shouldnt have had to wrestle though.

My only point is if you're going to critique it make sure you are using the right commands. Unless you critique is how specific the commands have to be, which this wasn't.

I don't have any of the new consoles, so I miss out on some of the basic stuff like this. It's not vital to my life, but I like seeing how these things work and feeling a little more up to date on things. I'd like to see more stuff like this, quick looks at stuff I might not be seeing on a regular basis.

@patrickklepek Very good stuff, however I do feel it is a little similar to some the videos Danny does over at Gamespot like the Point and Escape from Mount Stupid (now stopped) without the on screen presenter, I am not saying this is a bad thing and may be a conscious decision by you.

I use voice recognition to write emails and IM on my Android. It's great for the occasional quick use. For a long session of typing or searching, I do prefer a more robust interface.
