Spookin' With Scoops: 08/13/2014

It might involve running around the same hallway a million times, but P.T. (aka Silent Hills) is no joke. Sorry about that, Fatal Frame 2.

The roomies and I played PT. It had three grown men spooked multiple times. My favorite part was going to the bathroom and rounding the corner as a spook scare happened, my roommates flipped!

P.T. made me throw my controller down in fear before I got stuck on any puzzles, so mission accomplished.

Oh jesus, I love Silent Hill but I don't know if I can hang with this new one. At some point the graphics and lighting are just too good.

But I am 100% on board with the Kojima / Del Toro combo now. I feel like the subversive stuff that Kojima pulls in the Metal Gear games can really work in a horror game, and Del Toro can be delightfully creepy. I just hope the puzzles in the final product are a little less... ambiguous.

"Holy shit! This looks incredible!"

That's funny because Kojima said the game isn't using the full capabilities of the Fox Engine to give the game that "independent developer" feel.

That was my favorite part of that interview. I feel like he has to be exaggerating. I mean, PT looks better (at least in terms of level of detail) than MGSV! Granted, it's a much smaller space in PT, so there's WAY less to render (never mind lack of AI), but still.

I am so unbelievably impressed by PT. I have never been that tense or creeped out watching something as I was watching Patrick look up at the entryway and saying "...there's something up there..." Everything up until the obtuse puzzle stuff gives me chills just thinking about. I originally thought Kojima plus Del Toro was an awful idea. If they can maintain this level of scares throughout the next Silent Hill, I will gladly buy a PS4 just for the game.

I think I'm gonna watch the entire first bit of Spookin all over again just for PT.

that P.T game is no joke. But I am not really getting silent hill vibes from it either, but that might be because the whole thing takes place in a fucking corridor so it's hard to gather anything from that, other than holy shit it looks amazing and first person horror games are terrifying.

Also jump scares are the cheapest. fuck off and give me my normal pulse back.

P.T. has to be best looking game I have seen on the PS4 so far. I don't know if it's because of the fact that it's such a small environment or because of the first-person view, but a lot of it approaches photo-realism for me.

And Hideo's saying they had to dumb it down to make it seem independent or something. But FOX engine in small spaces can be quite impressive, it seems.

Fuck. That was intense. I don't know what compelled me to actually play this game in a pitch black room. I'm not that big into horror games but thought I would give this experiment a try. And knowing that is was a Silent Hill teaser I thought I would experience it in the best possible way.

I soooooo regret that. This was intense as hell. My nerves. My poor damn nerves.

BUT just so you know. You don't have to find all paper pieces to finish the demo. That only seems to be some extra thing. There are other triggers that actually propel you forward.

Incredible experience. Haven't been this tense while playing a game for a while. I totally believe in this. Kojima is a master at mindfucks and tricking people while Del Toro just knows his stuff when it comes to deliver creepy feeling and atmosphere (as Pan's Labyrinth proves). Hopefully the same feeling is in the final game while the puzzles become less obtuse.

@patrickklepek:Thank you for doing this! I had let my subscription lapse until Spookin' with Scoops started picking up again. Since Halloween is coming up, I was expecting there would be more content in the coming months so I was thinking to re-up in September. But as soon as I saw this, I had a reason to upgrade immediately.

Also, I don't want to get too emotional or whatever, but since I don't do Tumblr or Twitter, this is the only place I can provide feedback . Anyways, I know you sometimes get flack from other users so I wanted to take the time to let you know that I'm a huge fan of your work. I liked you from the get go, and I'm happy to say that you've yet to disappoint. Don't get me wrong! I love all the Giant Bomb guys, and even have the teeniest tiniest crush on Vinny, but you're one of my top two faves.

That's it! Keep up the good work and please, please, please do more SWP!

COME THE FUCK ON.

The photo scraps are just an optional little bonus for people who are super observant. You can finish the game without picking up a single scrap.

I had to turn off PT after like the third or fourth go around where you turn the corner and there is someone (something?) standing in the hallway. I am generally kind of a baby about real horror stuff, but this really got to me. I would really like to play the game when it comes out, but if that is indicative of the vibe they are going for, I don't know if I can physically handle it.

Okay holy shit. I am so bummed I missed this live- well, I was there long enough to ask what game he was playing, then I had to go. Watching this now- about an hour in- and I need a goddamn breather... This has been amazing thus far, though.

Edit: Aww, kinda sad it tapered off at the exact moment I was too freaked out and had to pause. Still, scary things typically don't get to me all that much, but this did its job, so I'm impressed nonetheless.

32:24 - The torchlight reflecting off the mirror is fucking sexy as hell.

Without trying to sound like a tough guy, I don't scare easy. I've watched hundreds of horror movies ever since I was a kid in the 80s. Because I lived through the era of practical effects, my sense of "this is frightening" while watching horror movies soon transitioned into a fascination with how a scare is constructed and pulled off. HOW DID KEVIN BACON GET THAT ARROW THROUGH THE NECK etc

So with that said, while I wasn't outright scared by this, I felt that build up and fucking loved it. The atmosphere of dread, the sound design, the lighting, the way the environment is altered with each walk through, the jump scares... all of this was completely compelling to me, and I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what it dished up next.

Of course, it helps that the tech that's behind this presentation is top notch. Man, that's some good looking shit happening on the screen right there.

The real tragedy of this, though? I don't own a goddamn PS4.

P.S. Shout out to any fellow Eraserhead fans that were feeling that movie during this.

@buzz_clik: Boy isn't it? Having the pleasure of playing it first hand and damn this is one good looking game. The light reflection and the excellent use of depth of field, everything just comes together to create a startlingly creepy package in such a traditionally mundane environment. I haven't watched this yet so I'm not sure how noticeable it is here but they make nice use of chromatic aberration also.

The FOX engine is a real stunner, I hope in bringing the already gorgeous looking PS4 version of MGS5 to the PC they also allow for such things as tessellation and the like. The models in MGS5 have incredible materials but seem to be lacking a bit in the actual polycount department.

Inverted Y-axis 'til the day I die!

P.S.- the answer to Patrick's question: Flight sims are the origin of inverted controls. To say "grow up" and use standard controls is a bit off considering that the older you are, the more likely you use inverted controls. My friends and I, all in our 30s, all use inverted controls. Our first exposure to the first-person perspective was Microsoft Flight Simulator. Think of it as pulling back on the stick is like leaning back to aim up. My friends in their mid and late twenties all use standard controls and think N64 is the best console ever. Lost souls.

P.T. was great before it devolved into pixel-hunting nonsense. Like, I was genuinely upset and had trouble watching another person playing it. That's sorta nuts.

And yes @patrickklepek, you should play through every Resident Evil and/or Fatal Frame in October... assuming you don't want to take another look at those other two Blair Witch games like I know you do. Why play good games when you can settle for bad imitations?

That was a very impressive demo, and since Silent Hill seems to have lost its way in recent years, it's exciting to see it taken in a strong new direction.

Having said that, no one ever calls "nine-eleven". I'm hoping that's not something creeping into general use, because I can already feel myself going into grumpy old man mode over it.

First 20 minutes are great it seems. Then friggin nothing happens for like an hour.. I was just waiting and waiting for Patrick to go "okay this is a good place to chuck on the next game." I was right on board with him saying it isn't fun or scary anymore. Unfortunately chat actually was trying to help him find pointless pieces of paper when they should've be asking for the next game :)

So I looked up someone solving it all and the Silent Hills teaser... Man it's such a cool idea but those stupid puzzles really REALLY made the thing into a piece of garbage.

A lot of the people who are talking about how P.T. was a let down because of the obtuse puzzles need to remember that it was designed this way. Kojima and co. wanted at least SOME time to elapse before the surprise Silent Hills reveal was discovered, it wasn't really made to be instantly solvable.

I'm really glad to hear that the obtuse puzzles were an intentional thing to slow progress to the teaser trailer, because they really sucked the wind out of the sails by the end there. Horror games don't do anything to actually scare me, but I thought there were a lot of new and clever designs, which always surprises me in horror games (not just relying on jump scares and other obvious tricks).

They managed to pull off a lot in a tiny space, the atmosphere and sound design were really well done, and I think it could be something I get into even without being scared of it. If Silent Hills comes out and it doesn't have a bunch of really obtuse puzzles, and if it has combat that's actually alright, I might actually pick it up.

This could be potential spoilers: P.T. stands for Physical Therapy. The logos for the brightness adjustment screen look like Craneal Scans. It could be a game where you are prompted by some sort of expert to deal with your past..

Geez, Silent Hills is going to be good, maybe too good, if it's too scary a lot of people might not want to play it. That PT was scarier than most full horror games. Patrick was spooked all right. Kojima and Del Toro god damn man, the hype.
