Sir, I was trying to listen to you talk about your dark and mature narrative, but I was too busy trying not to stare at your dark and mature beard.

Am I the only one who thinks there's something really fucked up when the guy talking about how the game makes you "question your morals" a second after that is saying how "After a battle the enemies will rarely be dead, they will probably be lying there bleeding to death " And how the combat is supposed to be "fun"?

The PLOT can be as good as they like, but without good writing the STORY will never amount to anything because they tell the STORY through the writing.

Yeah I was not interested enough to even finish the demo but at least the sand looked nice. Maybe the full game will have more to it.

Played the demo, and the environment design is probably the biggest plus I saw. The characters/story didn't seem engaging, the shooting felt sub-average, and perhaps worst of all, they give you a stealth option that isn't really an option ninety percent of the time.

I suppose there's always the possibility that it was a non-representative action-y slice of gameplay, but my hopes aren't high after what I played.

I still don't get why this game is called Spec Ops... I guess dev's think calling their game with the title of a terrible franchise is better then calling it something new... I think this will hurt them more then anything. I'm not buying any game with Spec Ops in the title, not at full price. Now if this was called Operation Tango Nuclear Sand Storm 2k12... Then I might bite.

 • focuses on Single Player
 • has a story (of course, we have to see)
 • runs on PCs
 • I can play it with a gamepad
 • the 'brown' is particularly colorful (nice UE3 tweaks)

... unlike many of you, I liked the Demo. Didn't consider buying it before, but will do now. On the aforementioned Weekend Confirmed podcast, the Lead Designer Cory Davis @Snak3Fist talked about the painful process of 'focus testing' and how the dev team had to make hard decisions. Mostly 'dumbing down' the complex story.

The demo didn't really sell me on the game. Maybe I'll wait for a price drop or just rent it.

Also, I hope they figure out a way to vary the desert environment. The exteriors can be brown(it's a desert after all) but I hope they make some varied interiors.

I'm really hoping they also kept the gradual psychological breakdown of the squad that they touted so heavily in the early announcement (I remember one thing talked about was as the squad saw more and more horror, their melee attacks would change from a smooth execution to screaming while wildly swinging their rifles). Seems like it'll at least be worth a look.

All I keep seeing from this game is the action, which looks ridiculously underwhelming. It feels like since they put this back in the spotlight, that they've shifted the focus of the game, possibly even rebooting it, and it just doesn't look that interesting anymore.

But about your comment about the psychological breakdown... that was the shit I was interested in.

Yea seriously. What's the industry's fascination with "totally sweet and brutal" execution moves the past few years?

2 Things I learned in Color Theory is that yes opposite colors on the wheel are appealing. Also Color Theory isn't science, and it's actually bullshit as far as the 'best' image is concerned... DO WHAT YOU WANT in the end, is what my teacher said over and over. Color Theory is a guide line to understand how color can manipulate, but it's not ment to be used as a straight up guide to how to color your scenes. It really feels like everyone making these films/media only sat in for the first week of color theory, or realises they can make money off the shallow manipulation of color and human perception of it.

I really want to like this game and have been following the development for a while. However, after playing the demo I cannot justify $60. If the reviewers are good I'll pick it up after the first price drop.

"Realistic shooter", "not binary choice". Yeah, I think you mean the opposite of what you're saying, right?

Edit: Cory Davis (no wiki page?) is on Weekend Confirmed, if you want to hear more about this game.

@DeF: Good catch, I just checked the video interview from January of Twenty-friggin'-Ten and Kasavin's title was Producer. I was thinking he was heavily involved with story since he was writing unit descriptions for Red Alert 3 before that.

Fun Fact: Corey Davis's beard was very short and trim in 2010!

I kind of dug the demo. Retelling "Apocalypse Now" in the sand is more interesting than most game scenarios.

I wonder how much of Greg Kasavin's script is left after the last couple years of production hell. Since leaving, he put together a mini-studio, developed Bastion from scratch, released it, collected awards for it, and Spec Ops STILL isn't out.

Script? are you sure he wrote the original script because last I remember, he was giving interviews for the game as producer for 2k before he joined SuperGiant Games.

I believe it was one of the recent GameInformer podcasts that has a long phone interview with the guy from 2k who wrote the game.

I was so sure the story was going to be the good part of this game. Then the writing in the demo was sub-Gears of War.

The shooting was pretty fun, though.

I enjoyed the demo but like...I can't actually remember who said it, but someone during E3 mentioned they had a weirdly difficult time with it, and I'd actually agree. The shooting and controls were fine, but there was something I couldn't quite put my finger on that led to a LOT of deaths.

I'm really hoping they also kept the gradual psychological breakdown of the squad that they touted so heavily in the early announcement (I remember one thing talked about was as the squad saw more and more horror, their melee attacks would change from a smooth execution to screaming while wildly swinging their rifles).
