That looked pretty good to me.  I mean it's an MMO so I'm not sure why people would expect something other than static combat.  Yeah, before the GW2 zealots chime in, I know about that game, too.  Since ArenaNet went in a different direction, we'll have to see if their ideas work over time when the game is released sometime in the future.  This reminds me of KOTOR and that's a good thing.  The combat was calculated in the original Knights, so I'm hoping for some of that here.  I'm not interested in The Force Unleashed's style of hyper-kinetic activity.  I want something I can play for hours without suffering eyestrain or cramping.  Besides KOTOR wasn't about combat, it was about story and if this continues that tradition, then I'll get some good play from it.

@mewarmo990:  The combat in SWTOR looks really boring, that is why I think GW2 will be a much better game. An MMO is based around it's combat so you don't want it to be boring. GW2's combat looks fresh.

Even as a Bioware fan, it's pretty obvious to me that this is getting hype based on the fact that it's a Star Wars/KOTOR-themed MMO, rather than whether it is actually an amazing MMO or not. So I remain optimistic, but I have to say Guild Wars 2 is looking tempting...

So unless TOR has a radically superior quest system...

Most of the kill quests are optional. When you get a quest and get into the quest area it tells you "Bonus - Kill x amount of x"

Man, I really hate how MMO combat has no action to it whatsoever. Troopers just standing there in the open shooting each other until one of them dies, then aiming at the next guy and so on. And the Jedi duals are two guys standing rooted to one spot facing each other trading ridiculous over-animated attacks where they do a crazy backflip - and possibly just miss due to the nature of the game. I mean, that'd be fine if that's what Star Wars combat looked like, but it isn't. The only really static lightsaber duel was Vader vs. Obi-Wan, and they sure as hell weren't doing crazy jumps. That said, I'm willing to give this game the benefit of the doubt because KOTOR was kind of the exact same way.

Your problem isn't with the MMO genre, but rather, is with the RPG genre. Look at the original KOTOR games--they're incredibly "stand around and watch numbers tick." With that said, there are quite a few "twitch skill" MMORPGs out there. Hell, even limited to the free to play categories, I can name a few.

See: Dragon Nest, Spiral Knights, Vindictus.

I am aware this gameplay choice is part of most Western RPGs, and like I say, KOTOR is a great example of that. I guess I just wish we'd get a little bit more advanced, and get better at hiding the dice-rolls. The problem I have is more that an MMO on this production scale that's set in a huge action-based universe, maybe should try and address those action gameplay aspects a little better. I understand RPGs need to run dicerolls, but I'm not sure why these dicerolls can't still happen while players and NPCs are moving about, reacting to the environment. I can forgive them for the melee stuff - I'm sure choreographing a proper dynamic lightsaber fight on the fly is near-impossible - but gun-wielding characters could surely move around, maybe move behind cover for a save bonus, and maybe you have a simple trade-off for moving-and-firing where you have less accuracy but you are also harder to hit. I know I'm just throwing ideas around, but I think I'd be more excited to see some mechanical innovation within the MMO space that fits the property than to learn they've got X thousand hours of voicework.
Im pretty sure there is a cover mechanic in this game. That said, i don't see why we couldn't have Mass Effect like combat in an mmo environment... i mean Mass Effect is a rpg right? that has dicerolls...

wow that was terrible, really really bad.  were most of those animations missing frames or what?  also why is no one moving?  was that all static lightmaps?  Is this 2004?  what the hell is going on over there at bioware?  I love how it's 2011 and all the round objects have gotten upgraded from pentagons to octagons.  Really fantastic modelling guys.

Bingo. Publisher fail on the music, developer fail on the lame mmo mechanics.

Completely psyched for this game - I didn't ask for this originally, but will be more than happy to play through 8 different main KOTOR stories and hang out with my friends in this world. For those who just want a single player game out of this, you could always just play through a long class story without grouping with anyone. Then resubscribe when/if you feel like doing another?

I have absolutely no idea why people are so cynical about this game. Anyways, I'll probably roll Consular as my Republic alt, but I'm gonna be maining an Imperial Operative.

@BisonHero: Yeah, at least there will one asshole less. Or two. Don't think I'll get this game. Subscription based MMOs are over, imo, specially $15/month. Go to a F2P model like DDO.
