I could never get into DOTA for the same reason I have a hard time with HON... Denying. This one tactic, dramatically decreases the amount of fun a newcomer can have with the game.

This is also why I enjoy LOL so much, they keep your attention on the action.

It is good to see HON trying to seperate themselves from the basic DOTA formula a bit more. I am really curious to see how close DOTA 2 will be to the original mod, and if it is, will it be as successful as LOL.

@Eej: Lol, for some reason your description just made me think HoN is Counter-Strike, and LoL is Modern Warfare. One has unlocks, and progression (LoL). The other does not (HoN). I dunno if you know this, but a shit ton of people like progression, and unlocks.

Also, your complaint about skins is kinda amusing, since that's literally the ONLY thing that requires money in LoL. HoN was what? 30-40 bucks to buy right off the bat? I've never payed a penny for LoL, and I have almost everything unlocked. In addition, you don't have to buy the skins put out by Riot in order to have new, awesome skins for your champions. Go to leaguecraft.com and check out all the awesome, customs skins you can have for each champion. They are just as good, sometimes better, than the skins Riot officially puts out for cash.

HoN was a fun game, I hope the matchmaking works well enough for it to reinvigorate my interest in it.

There's a difference. LoL requires you to pay money to unlock skins for characters (anywhere from $2-7 per skin) whereas HoN will let you buy any of the cosmetic changes for in-game coins. You say that HoN sales have peaked but every month the average number of players increases significantly.

Also the other significant difference is that when you buy HoN, you have all the tools to play at your best. All current and future heroes will be available from the start. There are no levels or runes to grind through to get your hero ready for competitive play. This also means you don't have to worry about spending days or weeks grinding up IP to buy runes to equip out the next hero you want to pick up for competitive play, while in HoN you can switch between playing carry, support, tank, initiator, etc. without having to touch the runes or summoner spells or anything like that.

Yes, theoretically you can grind up enough runes to play every hero effectively but that is a lot of games played with either potentially sub-optimal rune setup or just a hero you don't necessarily want to play for 100+ games.

Not many people realize this but HoN since the beginning was supposed to be a DOTA clone with the engine designed from the ground up for it and they totally did achieve that. This whole LoL vs. HoN thing is kinda pointless they both are going to die anyway when Valve comes out with DotA 2.

Pitty S2 sold distribution rights in South East Asia (And I think the Pacific too) to Garena. What a disappointing decision; else I'll be all up on HoN.

Heroes of Newerth is the closest clone to Defence of the ancients that I have played which is why I liked it. League of Legends on the other hand tries something different which is fun and interesting  but it just wasn't for me.

Not a fan of the LoL pricing model either, hoping HoN doesn't go down that path too far.

Yeah... after the 400 hour I started getting head-aches while playing this game. High level matches can be very demanding. I haven't played this game since the beta :) but I'm glad they are adding all this things :)

Never really gave HoN a fair shot. Went from DotA straight to LoL.
Might try this now though.

HoN is great if you want more DotA, though personally I played enough DotA to last me a lifetime for free with WC3.

Still can't get over the fact that you have to pay for this. I think it's a great DotA client but League of Legends is too.
That manages to be free! What's up?
