It became the best selling home console of its respective generation of hardware.

It's pretty much the same as the other one, except the music is all instrumental (yes!) and some side-scrolling gameplay is shown for a brief moment.

So Sonic walks around with a sword? I don't see how that could save the franchise.

Since when does it need saving? Secret Rings was good, it lacked in some areas, like parts of the level design and some wonky controls, but nothing beyond improvements this sequel can introduce. We already know it has improved the controls, and the levels also look promising. People are being too harsh on this for no real reason, remember it's not the same team as Sonic 2006 or Sonic Unleashed, it's the Secret Rings staff.

@ OP: You forgot the medieval Super Sonic, that wasn't shown in the the first trailer either. But I prefer the first one anyway, it has the lyrics and Imo better gameplay segments.

I hadn't even heard about this game until this thread. =S

EDIT: after watching both trailers, I have to say, I'm unimpressed so far. The combat looked loose at best and the sword/setting seem to be a gimmick that's trying a little too hard to get Sonic out of his familiar surroundings. What system(s) is this coming out for?

Yeah, and then at the end of the game Sonic dies. But then he wakes up and realizes it was all just a dream...

Combat doesn't look any more loose than any other (good) platformer's combat, and it doesn't seem to slow Sonic down anymore than combat in other Sonic games, so I really don't get what beef people have, just mentioning "sword" and "medieval" and thinking that's enough to make the game look sub par. It's not.

A fairy tale setting isn't as good as keeping the 8 and 16 bit games' setting but at least it's far better than real-world settings. A sword which still has Sonic capable of his trademark moves in much the same way is also far better than a werewolf. This is an improvement over the main Sonic Team's games in every aspect, why so much flack then?

Sonic and the Secret Rings was good, this will be good too, and who knows, it may make the difference and become great. At least one of the prequel's main issues has been confirmed as addressed, so it's a better possibility than it being worse. Especially since more effort is evident in all aspects so far, including the visuals, which perhaps aren't perfect in screenshots but look pretty damn good in motion, especially in places like speeding through the grassy field or when looking at the castle/city from above.

In any case, acting like it's Sonic 2006 all over again, or worse like some do, is way over the top considering this team has given us much better than that already.

I'm not saying that it won't be a good game.  I just don't understand why they feel the need to give him a sword.  He did fine without one.

Oh, okay... Sorry just instinctive reaction from all the flack the game gets on the average forum. Anyway, this is Wii-only like Secret Rings.

so basically it looks like Secret Rings with a sword and some side scrolling levels. It can't be THAT bad...
