Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls
Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls was part of a larger project, called “Wizardry Renaissance” in 2009, where several publisher released games based on the franchise (even before that, there was already plenty of official and semiofficial games), the idea, much as the name suggest was sort of a revival, which this game was part, together with a handful of mmos, mobiles games and some games for vita/ps3 and DS.
Lost Souls overall, is a good game, maybe even a good modern, but very traditional take on Wizardry which follows everything down to details (and I mean for Wizardry I-V) with only a handful of additions, however this also can be a bit dual edged sword, because Lost Souls lack both of what other Wizardry successors innovations or takes, but also it feels very dry.
You have only three dungeons, which have plenty of levels, but that it is. also are few portraits for characters, the main quest is pretty good story with a few twists and branches and manages to be evocative in certain moments, however is kind hard to figure how to trigger certain events.
However, the art for monsters and some npc is pretty good, even if some parts of the art feels like it is almost of different styles, also there is a neat feature where you can read about the monsters, and often you find yourself rushing back to the city to figure what about that enemy you just faced.
In terms of pace, is fine, some people and reviews, might see it as harsh game, but I don't agree, the early game is ok and late on, you have enough tools to manage most stuff, some boss battles can be a bit harsh, however. My only issues, lie in minor stuff, such as most time you find a chest it will be empty, also to activate the automap you need to find map pieces, which can be annoying.
In the end, would I recommend? Depends, in one hand, this is maybe the only one of more true to the line Wizardry before 6 easily available, however, in terms of the Wizardry Successors, there are other, such as Elminage, Operation Abyss and Stranger of Sword City, which are better.
