Along with Tekken 2, Wipeout XL was one of the major catalysts in my purchase of a PlayStation. Get a couple cocktails in me and I'll ramble endlessly about the bracing sense of speed, the slick ship designs, the (then) uniquely futuristic graphic design work of The Designers Republic, and of course, the severely zeitgeist-y Astralwerks soundtrack. Wipeout XL also marked my first exposure to Red Bull, the net results of which are still being determined.
So needless to say, it brings me great joy to report that Sony announced this morning through its lovely PlayStation Blog that Wipeout HD (I don't care if Sony itself spells it wipEout, I've got no patience for dumb-ass capitalization) is coming to the PlayStation Network on September 25 for the low, low price of $19.99. In addition to some hot 1080p graphics, Wipeout HD promises five gameplay modes, online play for up to eight players, offline splitscreen, 8 reversable tracks, optional SIXAXIS support, Trophy support, more European techno music than you can shake a stick at, and custom soundtrack support.
