    Overview

The ancient Greeks were polytheistic in their religious beliefs, meaning they worshipped many gods. Their gods often represented different forms of nature. Their religion had no formal structure with the exception of various festivals held in honor of the Gods; there were no books or code to live by. Many legends of Greek heroes and mortals were also based on mythology such as Achilles and Theseus.

The most powerful gods were known as the Olympians. The ancient Greek believed that the Olympian Gods lived on the highest mountain of Greece, Mount Olympus.

The oldest Greek literary sources are Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and the Histories of Herodotus. Greek mythology has exerted an extensive influence on the culture, the arts, and literature of Western civilization and remains part of Western heritage and language.
