Jagged Alliance is a franchise known for its methodical pace and rather steep difficulty curve. The player is usually given command of a group of mercenaries working toward a common objective in a series of turn-based missions. Notably, the merc units each have unique biographies, histories and personalities, which can impact their willingness to work with each other.
Players themselves must also maintain a good reputation by keeping mercs alive, paying to have their body shipped home in the event of death, and only firing them with good reason. If the player becomes undesirable as an employer, mercs will charge more for their services or even refuse to be hired.
All games in the franchise were PC releases until 2009, when a remake of the original game was released for the DS.
