TFP's Top 10 Games of 2020
2020:
- Doom Eternal is the Doom 2 to Doom 2016's Doom E1, in that I feel like it is a much bigger game but very definitively not a better one.
- Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a game in need of an editor like no other I've ever seen. While I did enjoy most of my 100 hour first playthrough, I don't think their "no side missions, only important loot" experiment paid off. It resulted in an insanely bloated main story with a lot of required things that felt like they shouldn't have been, and an equipment system that seemed superfluous at best.
- Phantasy Star Online 2 came out this year in actual English which was legitimately surprising.
- Astro's Playroom is a joyous celebration of Playstation history. I mean Raziel shows up and I thought me and my friends were the only ones who still cared about Legacy of Kain.
- I really enjoy Fuser because it's very good at allowing me, someone with negative musical ability, to mess around and create some fun sounding music. Or terrifying music, really. Both happen with regularity.
- Tell Me Why is probably Dontnod's best game since that first Life is Strange. Turns out they're at their best writing mysteries featuring underrepresented protagonists, I guess.
- I think the Resident Evil Remakes are turning more into what I want out of Resident Evil compared to the current higher numbered ones, and the Resident Evil 3 Remake is no exception.
- Turns out games that previously were good, like Saints Row: The Third, Star Wars: Episode 1 - Racer, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, and Tetris Effect (Connected) are still good. Go figure.
- Maybe it's a bias, since it's the first time I've gotten to play as my favorite comic book character in something that isn't a phone game or a LEGO game, but I'm actually really enjoying Marvel's Avengers. It's probably my number 11, which is as surprising to you as it is to me. I feel like one of it's biggest strengths is that it does a really good job of making you feel like a legitimate super-hero, especially in the post-game stuff where it just throws countless enemies at you for you to dismantle.
- Finally, assorted 2020 video games I can't particularly think of ways to articulate how I enjoyed them include: Streets of Rage 4, Phasmophobia, Dreams, Murder by Numbers, Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2, Bugsnax, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Nioh 2, Gears Tactics, and Haven.
