GOTY 2021

I did not play many games released this year, instead getting around to some games that came out in previous years. And to be honest I am quite shocked at what I had missed, especially Return of the Obra Dinn. Now I just have to get around to playing The Outer Wilds at some point.

List items

  • This game is a masterpiece. Its blend of detective-like gameplay and seafaring epic made it a perfect game for me. I can not believe I had bought it when it came out but never got around to playing it.

  • Made me cry :'(

  • Full voice acting encouraged me to replay this. Just as good the second time.

  • I fell off of Wasteland 2 when I could not decipher some of the gameplay elements and ended up losing interest. This iteration is far more streamlined than the previous game, probably to the detriment of some but made it much more approachable for me. Although I never did figure out if the path I chose was the right one.

  • Since The Witcher season 2 was due to be released this year I thought I would go back to the game to see how it holds up. I found the combat much more appealing the second time through as I guess I was sufficiently disconnected from Dark Souls. On to Elden Ring I suppose.

  • I can not go past another The Room game, just when it releases to PC.

  • Same goes for a Sam and Max game. On a previous list I actually listed all the Sam and Max games generally. This I just replayed because there was a remaster.

  • I must have beat this game in under 6 hours or so. But I like just having it around when I want to drop in to a map or maybe catch an elusive target. I was not really engaged with the story so I did not mind how it wrapped up.

  • I bought it on Steam. So sue me. And man is it really just anime under a western guise. But the gameplay is solid so it I mainly just focus on the open world content.

  • I dig the aesthetic and the gameplay is engaging, but I just ended up falling off. I will definitely pick it up again later on and finally finish it though.

  • I got very lucky and for whatever reason I experienced very few problems with this game on my system. Otherwise its just another Battlefield game, but the addition of the Portal mode I think makes it stand out. And I had been sorely missing Battlefield since Battlefield 1.
