Disney Cancels Infinity, Ends Game Publishing Division

The company will be closing Avalanche Software and laying off close to 300 employees in the process.

Infinity 3.0 brought the series to the Star Wars universe.
Infinity 3.0 brought the series to the Star Wars universe.

The toys-to-life market has one less major player today, and unfortunately that also means that hundreds of employees have also lost their jobs.

In a blog post made this afternoon, Avalanche Software's John Blackburn announced that Disney would be discontinuing Disney Infinity in June. Additional information emerging from an earnings report and investor call indicates that Disney will be closing developer Avalanche Software. According to the Wall Street Journal's Ben Fritz, this will result in the release of nearly 300 employees.

The earnings report is (understandably) filled with lots of business jargon that makes it hard to follow. I'm not an expert, but I'll try to break it down as best as I can:

  • Disney is taking a "$147 million charge in connection with the discontinuation of our self-published console games business, principally Infinity." My understanding is that this means that because of this one-time event (the shuttering of Avalanche), Disney is taking a loss during this financial period of $147M. They say this to signal to investors that this is a one time issue, not a cost that will likely repeat indefinitely. In the opening of the report,
  • "The Infinity Charge was primarily due to an inventory write-down." An "inventory write down" is what happens when a company realizes that assets it has aren't going to sell for the price they were predicting they'd sell for. In this case, Disney is basically telling its investors that there was a $147M difference between the estimated value of the Infinity line of products and the actual market value that they now think the line has.
  • The report also notes that this charge also includes "severance and other asset impairments," but these are secondary causes. Specific numbers aren't given here, so it's hard to speculate with any accuracy about the percentage these make up of the $147M charge.

The long and short is that Disney is sitting on a ton of Infinity merchandise that just isn't worth the money they thought it would be, leading the company to make a sharp exit from the games publishing market.

Don't expect this to be the end of Marvel, Star Wars, and other Disney-property games, though. In a statement provided to GamesBeat, Disney confirmed that it will continue to license its many properties out to other developers and offered some additional perspective on their decision to cancel future Infinity products:

After a thorough evaluation, we have modified our approach to console gaming and will transition exclusively to a licensing model. This shift in strategy means we will cease production of Disney Infinity, where the lack of growth in the toys-to-life market, coupled with high development costs, has created a challenging business model. This means that we will be shutting down Avalanche, our internal studio that developed the game. This was a difficult decision that we did not take lightly given the quality of Disney Infinity and its many passionate fans.

According to Blackburn, Infinity will offer two more retail releases, "including three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass later this month, and the Finding Dory Play Set launching in June." Blackburn additionally thanked the long term fans of the series for their support and enthusiasm.

It's worth taking a peak at Avalanche's development history, which includes a number of late 90s console ports of major Midway games like Mortal Kombat Trilogy and NFL Blitz 2000.

Hopefully those affected by these layoffs will be able to find new employment soon.

Well I've seen the latest SW movie (I thought it was really good) and in the past I've bought (or been gifted) the movie later in some form as a keepsake. I haven't bought it yet and I don't think I will now. I know it's business for them but this is some real dark side shit for people who just bought the game and the staff involved.

I never liked the whole toys to life concept, but [keep in mind this is from someone never having played any] disney infinity always seemed like the one that was most interesting, and would have most likely gotten me to play one. I mean I still never would [but hey not every product has to be for me!] but that was always the one that I kinda wished I at least tried out. Don't worry though about Johnny V, he will find a spot somewhere I am sure. He seems more that competent and will find himself a good job somewhere! :) Hopefully!!

I think Toys to Life was doing great in the early going, but fell off once there were too many disparate offerings. I've also thought that though the IDEA of the Toy Box seems like a better implementation with more flexibility, I had more fun just plain playing Skylanders with my kids. In fact, my kids have never shown any extended interest in Infinity, no matter who the characters in it were.

Not surprising. They've not exactly been putting out a lot. Makes more sense to license their properties out to other publishers. EA probably chomping at the bit.

Did not see that coming. Judging by how populated the user-created levels were I figured they were doing quite well. However, just based on my opinion of the "core" game it was very lackluster compared to LEGO & Activision's entry. Skylanders has a real game and so does LEGO, while Disney focused on weird, closed "mini-games" for most of their product. I regretted my purchase of Disney Infinity 2.0 solely based on that.

My prayers go out for the developers and I hope they can all land on their feet.

Well this came out of nowhere. I haven't been following all this "toys-to-life" stuff too closely, but I thought Infinity was doing pretty well, I guess not.

What's going to happen to Johnny V now? Will somebody think of Johnny V?!

Well the thing is it probably was doing pretty well, but it probably wasn't doing well enough to justify an entire department for it. If they are willing to take a 147mil loss on it, they probably feel they just want out of the video game business all together and I believe infinity is the only game they develop.

This is why US tax laws are messed up. If a company can show a loss or shuts down a division they can't write-off some of their taxes. In effect they say, "We don't lose money, we will just won't give the US some tax money we owe. Sweet!" Which basically means the US government makes shuttering businesses and laying people off advantageous and it comes out of "OUR" pockets.

I am shocked to hear this hasn't been a winner moneywise. I work at a school and all kids can talk about is Skylanders and Star Wars so you'd think this is the thing.

Coincidentally was studying impacts of inventory write downs for my CFA test as I saw this news.

Unfortunate for the devs (to say the least) but they worked on a great game, hopefully everyone's able to use this project on their CV and get work elsewhere.

While I did enjoy playing Infinity with my kids, this really doesn't come as much of a surprise. From all accounts, a massive team did a massive amount of work on the game and it wasn't really that great.

I guess my dream for a Tron playset is now dead.

This stinks. But it also seems like it was a shitty thing to have happen on all sides of this. Obviously Avalanche is feeling it pretty hard, but Disney probably had to do some pretty hard soul searching and decision making to decide to pull the plug. Closures like this can go worse. Ask Curt Schilling. I just hope that the severance they received from this whole thing will be distributed in a way that makes sense to at least bridge the gap between jobs for these folk.

As someone who is studying business (at Virginia Tech, fyi) in college right now, you get asked by professors a lot about what you would do in these kinds of really shitty or ethically ambiguous situations. The answer that you get from their point of view is that we should try to respect people's well being and at the same time acknowledge the reality of the situation that we find ourselves in. It's a tough knife's edge to walk but it's one that I think we should try to tread whenever possible. Sometimes it's easy to do and sometimes it's really hard. I don't think I'm stretching it when I say that people on all sides of this story aren't feeling too hot right now. both from the studios point of view and the folks at Disney that have to make these really tough choices. Just a sad day all around, and I don't even like Infinity all that much.

The Toys to Life category only had a 4% increase year to year in 2015. That is not good when you consider that Lego Dimensions launched with a large amount of product available day one, and the majority of Amiibo released throughout the year.

It is also of note that we have yet to hear Activision's plans for a Skylanders game this year. By now we usually get some details about the basic premise of the new title.

The long and short of it is that too much like product flooded retail in a short timeframe and it turned off a lot of consumers.

We saw it with the massive amount of Wii accessories, the rhythm game boom, and now with Toys to Life. Flooding shelves with proprietary plastic is a doomed venture in the long term.

So, I noticed that Austin pointed out that we shouldn't see this as the end of Marvel or Star Wars in games. And he's right about that. Star Wars has some games brewing, and I'm confident we'll see another Battlefront.

But, with Marvel...I have a feeling aside from Lego games and something with TellTale, Marvel games will probably be stuck to mobile games for the foreseeable future.

It's rough out here in these gaming streets. Capcom is also having a problem with SFV. The game is not selling nearly as well as they hoped. People just don't have money like that these days and the gaming industry is suffering as a result... everything is suffering as a result.

I've always wondered if I would've liked the toys-to-life genre if it existed when I was a kid. I feel that it could still be profitable if they dropped the physical toys angle and made it purely digital. Seems like it would be more palatable to parents (assuming the prices dropped a bit correspondingly). The games seemed like they were a pretty cool thing, but the toy angle was abhorrent to me. I'm not the target for it whatsoever, though, and I know this.

Amiibo still sell extremely well. Maybe it's the fact that they aren't linked to specific limited titles. Keeping them as minor bonuses on many games rather than big interactions for individual ones might just better be a better business model. Sell them as a collectable first and an in-game use second.

In other words, don't bother trying to sell it to Jeff.

I saw Double Fine offer their condolences and their mention that they were hiring (specifically?) to staff who lost their jobs, which I thought was a nice touch. I don't think that'll help JV, but there's a lot of people affected who might suit DF's needs.

On the one hand, toys-to-life is such a consumer unfriendly genre that it deserves to fail.

However! 300 humans losing their jobs is a total bummer. Plus, I fucking love Disney and their characters and it pains me every time one of their ventures into video games fails because Mickey Mouse deserves better, goddammit.
