Netflix Reportedly Developing Live Action Legend of Zelda Series

Game of thrones? Nintendo?? Zelda? Nintendo??? HOW?

Surely there's a bunch of as-yet unexploited YA fiction properties that would be better suited to adaptation, and have more in common with Game of Thrones. The inherent problem is obvious - Link has never canonically spoken, and time has not responded well to the times he has. What is his personality? Brave, mute, cipher? What does he even do? He goes in dungeons, he moves blocks, he shoots statues with arrows, and hits a bunch of shit in a row with his boomerang. By and large the world and characters around him only exist to serve the needs of the game - and while they've made a lot of cool quirky characters, there's no complex conflict in their lives to be mined.

That all being said, I guess the whole point of the franchise is that each new entry is a new Link in a new world, so if they transpose the basic building blocks to a more realistic world with richer storytelling, I guess they could make something work.

Such a bad idea. What's the show gonna be about? A kid running through fields slashing bushes. Have to believe this will never see the light of day.

So Netflix wants their own Game of Thrones series, that's less adult to appeal to a wider audience, and to attach a known property to it, from a form of media that has not traditionally done well when converted into film. I want to say their heart is in the right place, but I know too many people in Hollywood to believe that this isn't going to be muddled to death.

If our expectations are low enough, at least then we can laugh at it without sadness, right?

@atd88: The Super Mario Brothers film adaptation is an oscar-worthy masterpiece. Bob Hoskins' magnum opus.

TLoZ is my favorite series by a long mile but I have to say I'm not at all interested in this. It will be terrible no matter what.

I dunno, I kinda liked Legend of Neil. It had its moments.

...but yeah a "serious" live-action Zelda show would be dumb as hell.

The Halo movie is dead and I doubt Metal Gear will ever happen but the Warcraft movie comes out in 2016 and I think it's done filming.

I really want to see what they make, but I will remain skeptical that what they can make will be interesting.

Let's hope that it is good or at least not terrible.

If this ever happens - this will probably be the thing to tip me over the edge and subscribe to Netflix, regardless of how good this is. It'll be an opportunity to catch up on many shows I've never seen, convincing myself I just have to see for myself how this turns out.

For something like this I'll wait to reserve judgement until the final product is out (if it ever is). I think it could work, I thought The Sword of Truth adaptation was ok and liked Forward Unto Dawn (haven't seen Nightfall yet). The thing that I'm glad about is STARZ isn't doing this. If they were I'd watch it for half a season and be done with it.

It will either be an amazing revelation or a dismal failure.

I hope it happens because I have to see what it would look like.

I do wonder if this will break the cycle of "link does not talk".

Or maybe they will somehow butcher things by trying to make him a silent protagonist. Or maybe Link has been a mute all along and can only make emphatic grunts to communicate :P

you guys have to look at the big picture. If this takes off it could do to Nintendo what Disney did to Marvel. They WILL not invest in cg because good cg is expensive as hell. They are gearing it to the family audience for the bigger net and easier writing (think marvel)

Yea, I cant seem to wrap my head around this not being awful. Zelda works as a all ages family friendly game, but how in the fuck do you do that with live action? Half the reason Zelda is iconic is because of the sound design. Things like the cheesy mystery music when you discover a chest or hidden area. Overworld adventure music. Zelda games also really lack much of a story, and rely on atmosphere to carry it. Netflicks has done an amazing job with shows like House of Cards, but Live action Zelda is a tall order.

I'm guessing by "family friendly Game of Thrones" they mean it has swords rather than it weaving complex narrative following multiple characters, which is what actually sets GoT apart. Regardless of that though it doesn't sound like a great idea. Maybe it would be cool if Link wasn't in it and Zelda was the main character or something. Who knows though, Netflix has a pretty good track record so far so perhaps it will be a big surprise.

I'm sorry, what? What does that even mean? When I think of inspiration for a live action Zelda, the last thing that comes to mind is Game of Thrones. Seriously, those two franchises could not be more disparate.

I have no reason for thinking that this will be anything besides absolutely terrible, but I can't say I'm not somewhat interested. I'll definitely end up checking it out one lazy sunday after a few too many drinks or something.

Honestly? It's a dumbass idea, but it's infinitely more interesting to me to see how Netflix turns this shit into a TV series than watching Hollywood make the most boring mid-level blockbuster by adapting Uncharted or The Last of Us.

I support this only if they refuse to let Link talk beyond the simple grunts and hiya's he gives when swinging the sword. That would be funny and I would totally watch that.

I don't see how this could work ... I mean at least the original zelda had like what zero plot .... and the plot in the later games was just odd and totally disconnected to the plot in ones that came before.
