StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Hits Retail July 27

Go ahead and make your "hell, it's about time" joke. I'll wait.

Not much to say here other than a date: July 27, the day StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will hit retail shelves. So sayeth Blizzard (via a press release), and those guys don't typically commit to promises they can't make good on. So expect to get destroyed on Battle.net at the end of July by all the people who have been playing the beta for months before then!

Oh, you're still here? Hmm. Why don't you take a look at the incredible things people are already doing with the game's map editor?

So who else is still neck-deep in the beta? As a Protoss player I'm having a terrible time against Terrans lately, since immortals were nerfed a bit in the last patch and the marauder's concussive shell came back on the scene in a major way. Everybody loves to drop the ghost's EMP on 'toss these days, too, making immos and void rays all but worthless against a huge mass of marauders and marines. Little help?

Hmm wondering if this would be worth it for Single Player only. I have no interest in getting slaughtered online by a bunch of Starcraft enthusiasts.

To everyone buying the game when it finally comes out, you will not be destroyed by people who played in the beta because you will not be in the same league as them.  At least, not if they are good.  The placement system that Blizzard is implementing on the new Star Craft works really well so far.  It is easy to move up and down and it places you against people who are at your level.  So, for the first day you might get destroyed a couple times by more experienced players but by the end of that day everyone will be in their respective leagues playing against people near their level.  Also if you keep losing it gradually moves you down until you are faced against an even match and not someone your a lot better or worse than.  I've been playing the beta for a while, that's my source.  I hope it does come out when they say it will because I really want to play the campaign.  I'm doubting that it will though.  They still have a lot of tweaking to do to even out the races and I would think they would want to try out some maps that are bigger than 2v2 which is all they are offering at the moment.  Also, the AI isn't up, they should want to try that out as well and make sure there are no glitches in the computers builds before they release the game.  but maybe that's just me.  Maybe their waiting for it to hit the shelves and then they'll release some patches.

Is it just me or does this news severely lack a reference or even a snippet of the press release or anything to give some credibility to the story?

I'll believe it when it has actually released.  The ship date can slip so don't bank on that being the actual date.  We've seen it happen before (and I'm talking in general not specifically about Blizzard)

If they go mostly marines, go collosi.

If they go mostly marauders, go voids.

And use plenty of zealots/sentries/stalks as necessary.  Force fields to choke them, shields for defense, and illusions to waste their attacks.

@Levio: Terran is so damn hard to scout though due to the instant wall-in and missile towers keeping observers out. MM keeps you from attacking the choke very effectively and by the time you figure out what they have it's often too late to tech switch if necessary. Meanwhile they can look right into the middle of your base at the touch of a button (and by missing a couple of MULE calldowns). PvT is frustrating as hell when you're the P.

Yo Brad,
Dealing with EMP is easy. All you need to do is have an observer and a high temp out in front of your army. When you see the ghost you use feedback, which kills ghosts instantly most of the times. And afterwards you just use the high temps for storm. Sentry forcefields help split up the MM ball making the army less effective. Also zealots with charge are good vs marines and maurauders. splitting up your army also works because your opponent will need to use multiple EMPs to get your entire army. Since the void ray got buffed in the last patch it has become incredibly effective against smaller units like marines. Rushing to void rays destroy your enemy in minutes. 1 void ray can take out 3-4 marines easy and when it's charged up it will tear through those foolish terrans even faster.

I wish I could play some games with you brad and teach you some things but unfortunatly I play on the European servers.
Hope this helps

Yep. Don't care at all about Starcraft, because I know that going online will be pointless and I will get stomped by people better than me every time and I find RTS single player to always be both incredibly dull and monotonous.  I have yet to be shown anything different on either count. But please. Everyone worship it. Because it has Starcraft in the title and will be catering to the people who were into the first game when it first came out, which does not include me.

@Brad:
Yea in a TvP match-up Protoss will be the underdog. But let's not forget that missile turrets cost 100 minerals a pop, not every Terran spams em as often as I do so rely on Observers. At least around the edges to see their army make-up/numbers.
That way you can decide when to attack. It's a shame you lost because you didn't know the exact numbers of your enemy in the PvZ game I watched, you had a superb start and even fended off the wyrm!

I have 2 more months to get 25 wins for every race :-/ In 1v1 and 2v2. Damn it! Do we really get to keep our achievements?

a good way to assist your immortals vs. M&M is to build sentry and use the shield or split their army in half with the forcefield as well.  emp will definitely mess that up so a good strategy for PvT is to actually steal their gas with a probe before they block off their choke, its only 150 minerals but it takes them a long time to get it back and can really mess up a fast M&M build which gives you time to get em.

edit:

its true that late game its almost impossible for two equally skilled players one toss, and one terran, to have the toss player come out victorious.  thats something im sure they'll balance but the key to beating terran players, for me anyway, has been to take them out early game with a good harass.  the gas almost always works.

Im loving the beta at the moment but you are correct Brad, there are a few balance issues that remain... Namely Terran vs Protoss and Terran vs Zerg.

Banshee rushes can beat most anti air that Zerg can muster especially if you don't want to waste money on static defenses. Those concussive shells and ghost EMP/nuke rushes hurt majorly too. Blizz have been re jigging everything recently though, we'll see how things pan out, i'm sure they'll fix up most issues before release... It is 3 months away basically...

@NoXious: I really should have pushed in that game after the nydus attack, didn't think I could stand up to all the spine crawlers in his natural though. Not pushing hard enough is my #1 problem in SC2 and I haven't really figured out how to make myself just go for it. Always feels like I could pump out one more unit/upgrade before attacking. That's how I end up with brood lords raping my base. :(

I'm 99% sure they'll be wiping all stats before retail, so I wouldn't sweat achievements too much.

The multi-player game does not do it for me, too much like the original. I know that is exactly how a lot of people want it, but not myself. I am happy for those who get to enjoy it though! I would not mind checking out the single player game, though I will wait for a review to account for its style.
