Beyond: Two Souls
Game » consists of 7 releases. Released Oct 08, 2013
An interactive supernatural thriller from the studio behind Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy. It tells the story of Jodie Holmes, a girl with mysterious psychokinetic abilities.
Who is still interested in these David Cage games?
I am. Heavy Rain was probably not great and I agree with the points you've made, but ultimately the game was unique and "interesting" (which is, according to the bombcast, a synonym for "not good"). So yeah, I'm probably gonna play Beyond at some point. Like Alex said during the E3 2012 podcast, these games fail in interesting ways. They may not be great, but they are always intriguing.
I'm not interested in this one at the moment, but I sure did like Heavy Rain. It may have only really captured me for one playthrough, but it was a hell of a playthrough.
It seems weird to me that a lot of people can't express an opinion on Quantic Dream's games without saying how much of an asshole David Cage is first. As if him being a dick had anything to do with the quality of his games.
Best part is the people mentioning it are the same people who give Phil Fish a freebie and says "No, he's cool, he sat on Ryans lap once!"
Or "David Cage is a terrible person. Listen to this thing he said!.... What about Phil Fish? It's ok, he's indie!"
Sure, I'll pick it up at the libeary some time. Should be a good afternoon rump.
Hey, it's the Racoon Dog!
Anyways, I enjoyed Heavy Rain quite a bit, so I'll be playing Beyond.
@bisonhero: Right, because finding woman attractive makes him a pervy weirdo. Man, people need to lay off on this topic...
@zeforgotten: The problems some people have with Phil Fish are different from the problems people have with David Cage. It's not ironic nor is it hypocritical to approve of one and disapprove of the other.
I'm still interested in these games in the same way I'm still interested in Suda51 games, they're unique. These people take games and make something really different with them, different from anyone else. They're unique experiences that you couldn't get from someone else.
Fishs "modern japanese games just suck" comment is pretty much on the same level as "If you have a game over screen, that's failure on your part. Mr. Developer. You just suck at coming up with stuff yadayada". One is apparantly "fine, he's indie" the other is pretentious and "shitty"
Also never said anything about it being ironic or hypocritical.
I did say it was funny how some people defend one dumbass comment and then trashes another guy for making almost the same kind of dumbass comment. Also, when they judge the game by said comments. It's precious... or "special"

But it's the same specific fetish in every game! David Cage, you're free to Google pictures of sexy ladies in white underwear and white tank tops as much as you want in your free time, but c'mon, Dave, you're at work. Just this once, would you leave that scene out? It's super fanservicey and pandering, except it is pandering specifically to David Cage.
It's not pervy to like sexy ladies in white underclothes, but it's pervy to keep putting that scene in all of the stuff he makes as if to say "You guys are super into this too, right?" The scenes always just seem so...unnecessary when they come up.

That would be irony. Or, what you mistakenly believe is irony, but actually isn't because people are evaluating each comment on its merits and coming to the conclusion that one is more acceptable than the other because they are different comments coming from different men.
I liked the part in the Middle East that I played of Beyond and I'm not a big fan of Heavy Rain or Fahrenheit. So I'll give it a shot.
I get that people don't like his games, and frankly I think they're overrated, but I do think Beyond has potential. Maybe to not be amazing be engaging and fun at least...

I still don't really see how it's THAT pervy. I mean it doesn't really bother me, and I don't think I'd really classify it as a fetish because it appeared in two of his games. I wonder if it is a legit pattern though... does a girl in white underwear/tank top combo appear in Beyond?

Three games. And I'll bet its in Beyond too.
I dont think its "pervy" though. More like weird.

Fine, maybe not "pervy", but "weirdly voyeuristic".

I don't know if it's necessary for the story per-se, but it is somewhat realistic (as far as that word applies to video games that is). Unlike men, in life women face the very real danger of rape in a burglary or assault scenario. To me it is that unfortunate but very real threat that adds tension to these sort of encounters with female protagonists. If it's Nathan Drake then you know they'll just beat him up and whatever, he'll get up and try harder. But when it's Lara Croft from the newest reboot, you're not sure - she's a young, attractive girl, on an island full of savages and there's that uncertainty of what could happen if they catch her that adds tension to the gameplay. I don't think that's voyeuristic or perverted, just like I never had any issue with Crystal Dynamics claiming they want gamers to care and want to protect Lara - I think it's natural and organic to experience empathy for a character you're controlling and I can only imagine that's what Cage is going for.

Which is why I never said it was irony.
You're the one on that train
Oh god I love that quote, "I've always felt that 'game over' is a state of failure more for the game designer than from the player"
It's not like IP had game overs..... Oh wait.
So hes not allowed to criticize himself now?
Im not convinced he was criticizing himself, he has a massive ego and geniunely thinks he is advancing story telling when he is in fact only making the next generation of mega/sega cd fmv adventures. They are fine technically, but not at all what he claims them to be.
I dislike David Cage in the same way I dislike Peter Moloneux. Promises that amount up to lies. Although weirdly enough I kind of liked IP. It was terrible but it just said fuck it and went all the way. Heavy Rain was a travesty due to several spoiler reasons which I'll just not bother mentioning.
The demo for Beyond played nice and was much more than I actually expected compared to Heavy Rain. Seems like a fun play especially since there's a co-op mode in it. I still don't like David Cage but it could be a decent game compared to some others. Kind of like sci-fi stuff that could show up on X-Files.

Im sorry what? You dont think men face the danger of rape in an assault scenario? I dont know where you live but it happens a fair bit in the UK and US, there are rapists who have no sexual preference or prefer males you know.
Definitely still interested in his games. Some stuff is a bit hit and miss, but man, at least it's something different than "FPS game X-12".
@zeforgotten: There's literally no similarities between what Fish said, and the stuff Caig has said over the years. Fish said one line about him thinking modern Japanese games suck, and he has also said a number of other "controversial" things. Cage on the other hand has never said anything like that, what he says can be compared to Peter Molyneux: He always promises a lot of things he can't deliver, in a ridiculous, over the top way.
To compare Fish and Cage is to totally miss the point.

Whatever helps you sleep at night
There were story focused games well before The Walking Dead by Tell Tale. And they were good. Shame people don't seem to know that but at the same time you're probably young and not aware of them.
David Cage games are generally great because of the boundaries they push. In Indigo Prophecy it was the attempt at movie quality plot (which really only amounted to ridiculous fight scenes that were kind of funny).
In Heavy Rain the fascination was how far the plot goes in pushing you in uncomfortable ways (cut off your own finger). He's also the only one that attempts to make interactive films.
In story and acting so far hes failed every time. Even though he fails so far every time, I'm still along for the ride because I know it will be ridiculous and I suspect this one will be disappointing too.
He seems to be better at making short demos of his tech than actual full length stories.
@rainbowkisses: Don't get my hopes up for nothin' man.
@viciousbearmauling: I feel you are being unfair and underselling his games. Indigo prophecy was awesome and yes, the thrid act went crazy but that does not take away from the other parts of the game. It also was doing things well before any other game was. Walking dead convo system for example was done in indigo prophecy.
Also no matter how you feel about story i feel heavy rain was the only game aside from maybe the witcher that had choices that matter and really changed the ending. So i still like david cage games and i believe they push some story mechanics forward in gaming while missing a few beats. But I'll take that any day than having the same type of games come out.
Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain were total clusterfucks, but they were fascinating clusterfucks, and as such I really want to see how Beyond flies off the rails, as it is almost certainly going to do. Aside from that, these games have weirdly specific production that very few other games really do. David Cage is a hack, sure, but he's still entertaining in a bizarre enough way that I'm glad he can still make games.
Duder there are still no games in this genre other than the ones Cage made previously. And oh yeah, the Walking Dead (never mind it having less than half the production). So I really, really, really don't think the genre is overfull or anything...

David Cage is sort of a dick and I disagree with a lot of what he says but I found Farenheit and Heavy Rain to be very interesting, albeit deeply flawed, experiences. So I guess I am sort of excited for Beyond.
Care to explain how David Cage is sort of a dick? I think he can come across as a being pompous and egotistical with claims that he is a pioneer but I wouldn't say he was a dick.
Sure, maybe David Cage hypes up his games a bit much and has some writing inconsistencies, but I'll remain interested as long as he keeps trying to do something different. I really think David Cage gets a bit more grief than he actually deserves (...but the same could be said for almost anyone in a creative role in the video game industry).
I am very interested in them from a gameplay perspective, however narratively I'm a bit less enthusiastic. Which kind of sucks, since the reason I find the gameplay interesting is because of how it relates to the storytelling, but this story in particular doesn't look very cool.
