Burt Reynolds movies ran so often in my neck of the woods as well during the 80s. Smokey and the Bandit and Cannonball Run like 2 times a month probably.
The hand coming up from the water in Deliverance haunted me literally for decades after seeing that movie at like age 8 or so..
The X-Files epside he was in was also pure gold IMO. That guy had a level of charm and swagger that's gonna remain unmatched as far as I'm concerned.
Apparently, he was originally picked for Han Solo in Star Wars and John McClane in Die Hard. May seem odd to a younger person, but not to me. In the late 70s and early 80s if you wanted to get butts in movies seats, you got Burt Reynolds. He was that big. Hell, Carson had him on his show it seemed every other week.
RIP Burt. This is news I haven’t heard until now and that’s very unfortune. The man was a great actor. My dad actually was in 2 brief scenes In one of his movies, Stroker Ace.
I grew up with Burt on the big screen; and even when they movies were dumb they were at least dumb fun. If you look at his IMDb you see his career was as long lasting you any actor could ever hope. Yet, what stands out is Striptease (1996) with Demi Moore, because by then everyone counted Burt out. However, Burt chewed on that role - he did it so well.
And, you know you are an institution when SNL makes you a character. Everyone remembers Darrell Hammond Sean Connery. But, the first time SNL did "Celebrity Jeopardy" it wasn't Hammond's Connery that stole the show ; no, it was Norm Macdonald's Burt...I mean Turd Ferguson...that made people laugh for that first skit.
