I wonder if they still collect royalties off of Infinity Ward's engines being built off Quake 3, or if there's not enough of the original code left in the engine to warrant it. Probably the latter.

This might just be my new favorite thing on the site. I not sure now whether I want to play Doom 4 sometime soon or see more posts in this thread every year.

I would like it to come out, but I really think and hope we wait for the next really huge jump in tech/graphics/sound/ect. I dunno, that is a lot of what makes id's stuff cool is the fact that they are on the forefront of a lot of tech and gaming mechanisms before most when it comes to new technology that has been made available.

Doom 4 needs to change a lot of things to keep me excited, Doom 3 was great, but it didn't really have the same run and gun feel, it was a horror game mostly, which is fantastic, but it could have swung in the arcade direction a little bit. And what was with the rumors of 4 being on Earth? Come on now.

Here's the thing, I don't need a new Doom. Hell I wouldn't even want a new Quake unless it was some Crysis 3 looking $20 Quake 3 style release. Any Doom that isn't Doom or Doom II feels wrong :P

Doom 4 should just be a remake of Doom 1 & 2, only open world and in the Rage engine.

Serious answer: I don't feel like Carmack was particularly integral to Doom beyond the tech side. He made Doom 3 what it was via his (at the time) bad ass lighting tech, but they've already got Id Tech 5, so I think at this point Doom 4 can survive without Carmack.That said, the fact that I can no longer name anyone working at Id Software is a little saddening.

I'm going to have to pre-order that fucking Wolfenstein game now.

I am probably way in the minority on this but...

Am I the only one that would be happy with just more levels but with the look or "graphics" of Doom 1 and 2? Make that game, stick it in a box and slap a "Doom 4" sticker on it. I'd be sold.

I think that's really all I want in terms of Doom.

B-but that already exists, there are hundreds upon hundreds of custom levels you can already download for free...

Check out "Doom (and Doom 2) The Way id Did". Or just go through the yearly Cacowards and grab all of that stuff. Doom WADs and mods have gotten absolutely incredible.

I've been following punkxblaze's decline for years, and I can tell you that once the Doom beta is canceled he'll blow us all up or die trying.

I know this is the case, I just don't really wouldn't know how to begin to get them to be honest. I've never really been a PC gamer except for some of the bigger "hits" in the 90s. Although the idea of custom levels does sound awesome.

It's easy once you get started. Get a source port like ZDoom or Zandronum. They both basically tell you what to do as you go along. (basically just point the program to your Doom .wad file)

After that, it's as easy as finding custom WADs and loading them alongside the game WAD. I'll be glad to help you out further if you need. I think every Doom fan should get into the user-created content.

Doom 4 Beta to be on PC, XB1, PS4 (Via Polygon)

The Doom beta is being offered as a pre-order incentive for Wolfenstein with all versions of the game, including PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. However, PS3 players will be given access to the PS4 beta, while Xbox 360 owners will get Xbox One beta access.

The FAQ explicitly states an Xbox Live Gold subscription is required to access the beta on Xbox One, but a PlayStation Plus subscription is not necessary for the beta on PS4. As for players who digitally pre-order their copy of Wolfenstein, id Software is working to ensure that these players also get access to the beta as well.

"We are working with Steam, Microsoft, and Sony to help ensure that persons pre-ordering digitally from Steam, Microsoft, and Sony will receive access to the Doombeta," reads the FAQ. "Other digital retailers' processes and/or participation may vary. We suggest contacting your preferred retailer directly for additional information."
