Dying Light Review
Dying Light is a spiritual successor to Dead Island with a day/night cycle which can potentially change how you play the game. During the day is where I did most of my play time—completing quests, searching for various loot, and crafting weapons. Night time is where you can gain double the amount of experience though, as more difficult enemies prowl the street, but—like most systems in Dying Light—I found myself avoiding night time to circumvent a lot of frustration. There’s a handful of varying systems in Dying Light that I usually avoided. Catching Bolters—a fast-running, night-only enemy—is something I did once for the story and never did again, for example. The combat was mostly satisfying but fighting the bigger, stronger enemies was always painfully annoying, so I avoided them altogether as well. There’s definitely a lot fun to be had with Dying Light—the parkour, as an example, is quite well designed and makes getting around the environments mostly a breeze. The catch? No fast travel, another common frustration. I enjoyed my time with Dying Light, I just wish a lot of mechanics were more fleshed out and weren’t nearly as irritating.
