In a clever twist to a generally unpleasant tradition, Bethesda and various retailers--GameStop, Best Buy, Steam, Amazon, and Walmart--have teamed up to distribute several pre-order-exclusive content packs for Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas. The twist is what's inside: character-build-specific content.

There's a total of four packs, one being split between Walmart and Steam, each offering its own unique crude bouquet of items. Luckily, the choice will be more or less surface-level. Do you like rolling with a pistol and heavy armor? Head to GameStop. Prefer to hack dudes with a machete raider-style? Go to Amazon. Like to cuddle with teddy bears? You're out of luck, sir; now get out.

This has nothing to do with this post. I just really think that mutant is adorable.
This has nothing to do with this post. I just really think that mutant is adorable.
None of the pre-order content deals Bethesda announced this morning (listed below) appear to be better than the others. None seem particularly vital, either, nor does it seem like content is being stripped for the sole purpose of dangling a carrot in front of our faces. It all looks good and fair, in other words, unlike the Fallout universe, which is never good or fair to the wasteland traveler.

== TEASER ==The Classic Pack (GameStop)
    •  I bet that shoulder pad will come in handy.
I bet that shoulder pad will come in handy.
Armored Vault 13 Suit - Extensively patched up and dotted with piecemeal armor, this outfit is an homage to the classic ending of the original Fallout.
    • Vault 13 Canteen - This handy device is useful for staving off dehydration and providing a small amount of healing in the Mojave Wasteland.
    • Weathered 10mm Pistol - A well-worn 10mm pistol that packs an extra punch despite its modest size.
    • 5 Stimpaks - Food and water are good for long-term healing, but when the fighting is fierce, Stimpaks help keep Wastelanders upright.

    The Tribal Pack (Amazon)
    • I kind of want to make a SoulFly joke in this space.
I kind of want to make a SoulFly joke in this space.
Tribal Raiding Armor - Pieced together from scraps of armor, this outfit provides protection without impacting mobility.
    • Broad Machete - This heavy-bladed melee weapon does high damage against limbs and can quickly deal out a flurry of attacks.
    • 5 Bleak Venom doses - Useful on any Melee Weapon, Bleak Venom makes short of work of most living targets.
    • 10 Throwing Spears - If you would like to silently pin an enemy's head to a wall, Throwing Spears are the way to do it.

The Caravan Pack (Walmart and Steam)
    • Nice boots, bro.
      Nice boots, bro.
Leather Armor - This hand-modified suit of leather armor reduces its overall weight without impacting its ability to protect.
    • Sturdy Caravan Shotgun - Despite its rough appearance, this Caravan Shotgun will reliably fire 20 gauge shells until the Brahmin come home.
    • 4 Repair Kits - Useful for repairing any outfit or weapon, Repair Kits are a valuable tool for any caravaner.
    • Binoculars - The Mojave Wasteland is a dangerous place, but with these trusty Binoculars you’ll be able to spot trouble coming.

    The Mercenary Pack (Best Buy)
    • That hair. Jeesh.
      That hair. Jeesh.
Lightweight Metal Armor - Modified for long-range travel, this Metal Armor sacrifices some protection for mobility and overall weight.
    • Mercenary’s Grenade Rifle - Though similar to other 40mm Grenade Rifles in the Mojave Wasteland, this model has a faster reload cycle.
    • 3 Super Stimpaks - When you absolutely, positively, need to keep your blood inside your body, Super Stimpaks fix you up in no time.
    • 3 Doctors Bags - Mercenaries and broken limbs go together like Iguana-on-a-Stick and Nuka Cola. Thankfully, these Doctors Bags take a bit of sting out of the inevitable crushed skull.

So, what are you getting? I'm thinking about grabbing the Tribal Pack, simply because of the machete. I'll dump the poor man's Mad Max, dune-rollin' armor as soon as possible, though. A proper Wasteland survivor wears heavy armor and rocks melee weapons. Everyone knows that.

New Vegas is slated for release this fall.

It's all in the game anyway, right?

I mean none of the items are exclusive to the pre-orders, except for which bundle of goodies you get up front when you enter the code..? I'll just get it post launch during a Steam sale like I do all my PC games in that case.

The trouble with AP was the engine (and gameplay as a result of this). This game already had the engine made by Fallout 3. Don't worry, this will be awesome.

I'd rather have a bobblehead or a full set of poker chips.  None of these items would cause me to pick one retailer over the other, or even to consider pre-ordering the game though obviously I'll be doing that anyway.

Caravan pack seems like the best: leather armor and a shotgun, hell yeah.

Those screenshots remind me how bad Obsidian games look, though. I think the original Fallout 3 might actually have better looking textures and models!

    Same feelings here.

I don't even look at 'exclusive bonus content' anymore, it's all junk.  Take RDR for example.  I had no idea about the Deadly Assassin outfit or the War Horse from Best Buy.  All I wanted was the game.  Gamestop was sold out so I went to Best Buy and got the horse.  Did it make my game more pleasurable somehow? No, it was just another code on a flyer for what amounted to a minor game cheat.

I'm thinking the Classic has style. The Caravan pack on the other hand, has binoculars, which seem like they'd come in handy.

    Stop pre-ordering games, please.

And especially stop pre-ordering games so that publishers can strip out pieces of a developer's own loved work so they can make more (and at least quicker) money along the way.

    Just fucking stop.

Kotor 2 and NWN2 were wrecks as well. Come on, lets be serious. Obsidian are TERRIBLE on a technical level. This game will run worse than Fallout 3 I can almost guarantee it.

After using the armored Vault 101 suit through the entirety of Fallout 3, I'm pretty bummed I apparently can't get this one through normal means. Still, I'm not making a pre-order at GameStop.

I'm fine with preorder bonuses, but retailer-exclusive preorder bonuses are bullshit.  I look at this list and just see a bunch of stuff I don't get to use because I'm not going to buy the game four times.

I'd rather have each retailer give us a different lunchbox.

I can not wait for this game. Hopefully Alpha Protocol is no indication for the quality of this game.

    "
The trouble with AP was the engine (and gameplay as a result of this). This game already had the engine made by Fallout 3. Don't worry, this will be awesome. "
Kotor 2 and NWN2 were wrecks as well. Come on, lets be serious. Obsidian are TERRIBLE on a technical level. This game will run worse than Fallout 3 I can almost guarantee it. "
Running worse than Fallout 3 would be quite an accomplishment.

Steam page says that Lightweight Leather Armor and the Sturdy Caravan Shotgun are exclusives for that pre-order. I'm assuming each armor and weapon is an exclusive. What's interesting is the repair kit. The whole repairing a gun with an identical one was okay in theory, but really stupid over a long amount of play. Sometimes you have unique weapons or even just weapons you can't get access to, which stops you from using it to the degree you want. Having set packs you can just apply will be more efficient. I hope they streamline more stuff about how Fallout works.

I'm also going to chime in that this game will probably be buggy as hell, regardless of the engine. Obsidian has some problems with polish and QA, not just on the technical side but just in general. There are powers in AP that don't get the proper durations and invincible turrets. Those aren't coding problems, they're we forgot to edit this game. (Edit in the writing sense)

I'm liking the caravan pack, still i'm reluctant to pre-order this game at all, considering Obsidians track record... Also i really, really hope this game will have better terrain than what we have seen so far, it looks so bland. It's like they've just hit the 'random terrain generator' button, which is also how i felt about oblivion and fallout 3 (still waiting for a unique landscapes mod for fallout 3, the oblivion one was amazing). Part of me was hoping obsidian would be a bit more creative with the terrain than bethesda was, especially since obsidian don't have to worry about the engine at all.
