Hopefully more of this stuff starts coming to North America.
Hopefully more of this stuff starts coming to North America.

OK, let's start with the facts, get those out of the way, and then we can freak out and speculate a little bit.

Technos Japan is the company that brought you such hot, hot hits as the Double Dragon franchise and the Kunio-kun franchise. That, in case it isn't ringing any bells, is the Japanese franchise that came over here in such games as River City Ransom and Super Dodge Ball. They also developed Karate Champ, so in some way they're directly responsible for the fighting game genre. They're an important studio that has been long defunct. The rights to those games ended up with a company called Million, which licensed some of these games out here and there, leading to some interesting stuff... and some positively dreadful stuff.

Well, Million has dealt those properties--the entire Technos catalog, actually--to Arc System Works, the developers of the Guilty Gear franchise. When I consider how well Arc has done in the 2D space (even going so far as to make polygons look like sprites in Guilty Gear Xrd), the idea of these amazing franchises ending up there sounds like one of the best possible outcomes.

Looks like Arc actually published that last 3DS game. Huh!
Looks like Arc actually published that last 3DS game. Huh!

The quick and dirty page that Arc has in place to confirm the news makes it sound like they're going to put in work on a new Kunio-kun game, but that other franchises will be revived and licensed, as well. There's already been one Kunio-kun release this year, the samurai-themed Downtown Nekketsu Jidaigeki for the 3DS. Hey, maybe they'll localize that and put it out? I'd play that game.

Of course, one has to expect that another Double Dragon game will come out of this sooner or later. Maybe Arc will take its fighting game team and have them make something a little better than that weird Neo Geo game.

OK, I could sit here and speculate about things Arc might do with all of these franchises all day, but instead I'll just say that this seems like a great combination! Arc is certainly capable of making cool-looking 2D-like games and they just acquired the rights to some real classics. Now we'll just have to sit back and see what their next move will be.

So given this news, and that ArcSys has such a close relationship with Atlus lately...

What I'm getting at is: Double Dragon style game starring Chie confirmed?

It's exciting news all right. I'm personally hoping for a Kunio-kun/Persona 4 Arena crossover dodgeball game. "Nekketsu Kouha Dodging All Night".

If they just release a compilation of the older stuff in English for the first time, I'd be thrilled. So many games we missed in the US/UK, like that baseball game where someone gets beaned in the nuts during the intro.

That's great news. Hopefully we see more 2d brawlers instead of 3d brawlers like Guilty Gear 2: Overture.

Oh wow, that's awesome! I can't say as I'm a huge fan of any of the companies or products mentioned, but I'd love to see a well-animated modern take on Double Dragon. That's an exciting concept.

I hope this doesn't cause any issues with the River City Ransom: Underground game that's in development via kickstarter. That game is looking so good.

This is good news. Street Gangs (River City Ransom for you Americans) is one of my all time favourites. I'd LOVE to see what Arc can do with it.

Sidenote: I like that you've been writing a little more @jeff. That coupled with Austin's articles is something I've been really enjoying. Hearing the staffs opinion on things is muuuuch better than just a dry news post. I hope there will be a lot more written stuff from you (and Brad! And Dan! And Alex!).

Nekketsu stuff is highly popular (for being such a niche) even today in Japan, seems several bursts of it a month in my crew. There are bands playing music inspired by those games, there are doujin-titles (Japanese indies, a thing that has been going since forever ago), cosplay, everything. Arc System will make a lot of love and money with something as simple as an emulated mass-release, even better if they localize all that stuff. This is pretty great.

Did they get permission to use the name, Abobo, the style and everything else in a product of their own that they will market and make money on? No problem in that case.

It would be pretty rad if Arc made a new Double Dragon game. But you know what would be even more rad? A new Streets of Rage game.

Someone make a new Streets of Rage game.

Pls.

This is a quote from the devs on RCR:U forums "In our case we had a licensor/licensee agreement with Million Co. Ltd for exclusive right to make a River City Ransom original title worldwide."

Beyond the nostalgia factor I wonder what even owning, or making, a Double Dragon or River City Ransom game now a days would even mean. I mean, you could make a River City Ransom or a Double Dragon type game (and even innovate on those concepts- as arguably many have already) without owning those licenses.

I wonder what this really does for anyone.

Ya, it is cool, the idea of them making another of these games, but what does that even mean in 2015? Do they even need the licenses in order to do something interesting?

The best thing, for me anyway, that could come out of this is a decent (should I wish for good even?) port of all the classic Double Dragon arcade games on PC. That'd be nice. As for expansion, though, I do wonder what owning these licenses now a days would mean to anyone.

Clearly it must mean something to Arc if they paid for the licenses so it should be interesting to see what they even plan to do with them. It would be disappointing if they didn't have goals in mind with these franchises.

Man, did I enjoy River City Random and Super Dodge Ball as a kid.

No idea if I'd enjoy something along those lines today. I gave that Scott Pilgrim game a shot, and man did I struggle to finish that. I'm even one of the few that read and enjoyed the comic (though the movie... eh...).

I'm only interested if they upgrade the format into character driven action adventure ala Zelda/God of War or a modern beat'em up like DmC. Oldschool, sidescrolling beat'em ups have no place outside of the arcades.
