By now, I'm sure most of us have seen the images and video of the character Quiet from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and the ensuing discussion it has caused on the internet (spurred on by 343 Industries' David Ellis). I have my own biases about said game and said design (ie, I've never really been a Metal Gear fan and it kind of disturbs me that important female characters still dress like hookers), but they come from the male perspective because that's what I am. What I'm wondering is what female gamers think about all this. Your voices frequently get drowned out by other perspectives because, let's face it, there are less of you in this hobby/industry, though your numbers are growing. Are we overreacting? Is this a minor detail we're quibbling over or something bigger? Should I not worry about it too much or is it something that offends you too?
GiantBomb ladies, are we overreacting to Quiet in MGS V?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
Nothing like that offends me, but this kind of design should be used only in porn games if they want that much to play games with a boner.
I know there's people concerning about "Quiet" but don't worry. I created her character as an antithesis to the women characters (cont)

Adding these to the thread, just tweeted by Kojima in the past hour.
Im a guy, but I still dont see the issue. Are all of the female characters designed like this? Why can't a single character be dressed like this? Women do, sometimes, dress "provocatively", and if she isnt characterized poorly, then why should it matter???? I think people really jumped the gun on this one. Sort of like a pissing match to see who can be the most politically correct
God damnit...
Also, calling a work of fiction "sexist" before actually interacting with it --going off of very little pre-release info-- is wrong......
Don't care. It fits in with the stupid sexual bullshit MGS has always done. It's just how some of their characters are designed and I think it's silly to get upset over this and not care about how goddamn well defined and modeled Snake's ass got over the course of the series and all of the homolust undertones between multiple characters and that section in MGS2 where you were literally naked.

No you are totally wrong you and your privileged white straight male opinion. Dont come up with reason....
@darji: If you don't understand what I am saying, it doesn't mean I don't understand the question. Whatever comes from America, it's no surprise to me; but thanks.
I think everyone's making way too big a deal about all this. I personally don't care that she's dressed like this, even if there was no reason for her to be dressed the way she is. Hell, I wouldn't bat an eye if she was running around the desert completely naked with only the rifle on her back. I'd still play the shit out of the game. The way I see it, it's Kojima's game, so he can make his characters however he wants.
So she's not dressed like a sniper normally is, so what? It's not like Vamp was wearing an official uniform either. People need to stop focusing so much on bullshit like scantily dressed women in video games and focus on more important things.

I totally do and i totally agree with you it was more sarcastic sorry if it went wrong but I am really annoyed with this topic in general^^
Well, being a female I can say that having your boobs out like that with so little support would be really uncomfortable and impractical if you're going to be moving around a lot. Also those pants would tear off her body. Also is that a g-string? Nope.
I don't have a problem with ladies showing some skin but holy shit does that whole outfit look like the worst idea ever.
@darji: I was also joking about the boner thing and no need to say sorry. My real opinion about this, it's kinda off the limits so I am not going to expose it here :))
Yep, here we go again I'll sit back in the shadows and just lay witness to forum chaos.
Oh hell yeah relic it is going to be great!

Good thing that this is not a realistic game. ^^ But the question here is are you offended by this outfit or her representation that she is going to be tortured and can not speak? Is is sexist in your opinion?
White piggu please.
@darji: Not one bit. Bodies are bodies; so what if you can see skin? We're not living in the 1800's anymore. It's not a big deal unless they do shameless slow motion boob jiggles without giving some shameless Snake butt wiggles. And as long as the torture is there for story-related reasons then whatever.

Exactly and Kojima in general is pretty equal in terms of sexualizing characters.^^

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not... If you're being serious, I'm sorry?

I was sarcastic of course^^

Supposedly, she has an ability to change her skin pigment to blend into her surroundings but her clothes still stay the same. So that reason can justify it, I guess. But I agree with you. If she were just a regular sniper then that outfit would be stupid and disadvantageous.
I'm glad that people are starting to initiate earnest discussions about misogyny and sexism in video games, but do I have to have these discussions with the internet?
I guess it depends on if Kojima intends for Quiet to titillate the audience, or if he has an actual narrative justification for her apparel. This is pretty much why I was okay with the rape scene in Hotline Miami 2, but not the sorceress in Dragon's Crown.
Yep, here we go again I'll sit back in the shadows and just lay witness to forum chaos.

Indeed it will be fenix.
It'll be like World War 4 while skipping the third war, it will be EXPLOSIVE!!!
And yet again the females of the site are drowned out by stupid gifs and people going like "Welp I'll just sit back and enjoy."

Hell fucking yes to that...
Cus soon enough we'll have the parade of forum knights to defend their dignity.
And yet again the females of the site are drowned out by stupid gifs and people going like "Welp I'll just sit back and enjoy."
This is exactly why we can't have nice things.
Can we wait to bitch about characters till AFTER the game is out please?
I mean we know nothing about her backstory, characterization, personality, the context in which she's wearing that, why she's wearing it, if it fits in the setting. I mean the fuck guys?
I mean if its disgusting and she's just grinding on snake the whole time and posing for buttshots then sure bitch all you like. Till then, put down the pitchforks till the damn game is out.
The design is fucking stupid looking, I don't care that she has some science bullshit thing that can change her appearance; what point, is there, to her choosing that? So stupid. but MGS is frequently stupid and dumb so whatever
Also congrats once again @darji for completely missing the point and posting all about how everything is not sexist because you said it wasn't and derp derp derp, you escalate all these topics because you so abrasively post your opinion as fact.
@animasta: Girl-to-girl. Why do you have a problem with it? Sure it was just a bunch of guys who decided on the design and idea behind her appearance (which annoys me a little) but why should girls get shit for wearing less? While this sort of thing can be tasteless (ex. Dragon's Crown) I really don't mind it here. I mean, this could just be the lesbian in me going, "OOOH BOOBS."
I was born with a penis so my POV probably doesn't matter here, but I just wanted to bring one thing up before I duck out of here. Were there not entire levels of previous games in this series where male characters were literally running butt naked? If it's ok for him to put buff super model looking dudes naked in his game then a pretty blond in a bikini is no different in my eyes.
Anywho, best of luck trying to get this to stay on topic before the mods come in to lock it down.
This thread might as well be locked, seeing as how the females once again got ignored or got sarcastic responses. Now it's just full of idiots saying "can't wait to see what happens" or dudes getting off topic. Someone please lock it.
Yeah this is getting annoying. Guys, don't you see the thread title? Let us have a fucking chance for once.
This thread is already a shitshow and nothing good is going to come of it. Why does every slightly negative or perceived negative trait in a female character automatically mean it's sexist or immature? God damnit.

My biggest problem is she's wearing torn leggings or whatever the fuck. Them being torn is so stupid, because why? Why not just regular non torn ones? Also those weird... whatever's around her shoulder. I don't know what that is for
Also also, if she really has this magic science appearance changer thing, and it can change clothes, why wouldn't she hide her guns and shit?
It's mostly that I think MGS is really dumb and this character design is really dumb and I wasn't going to buy it anyway vOv
@animasta: Yeah I brought up the impracticality of her outfit earlier. It's dumb for the amount of physical activity she's probably doing.

Why would anyone bring reality in a Kojima game? And they are mostly torn to be sexy and also to show what she went through. Again she was tortured and escaped somehow. Maybe they were perfectly fine when she was not tortured who knows. But even if not there is nothing bad or wrong to make sexualized characters and as I said before Kojima does this sexualisation with basically every main character that is how his games and the MGS universe is. Maybe Quiet is even a guy who the hell knows what Kojima is doing^^
Do we need multiple threads about this?
No.
This thread was supposed to address only the females of the site, so they can give their own opinion on it, but as you can see, it was ruined by idiots and probably only about 4 females posted in here, all of which were given sarcastic answers. So you're right, this thread was a bad idea.
Why would anyone bring reality in a Kojima game?
Because that's what the guy prides himself on?

That defense is terrible. Just because someone made a game (or movie, or TV show, or whatever) in which women are respected it's automatic that they all will be for the rest of time?
No one in this thread called it sexist. Maybe someone did in the other thread, but this thread is not this thread, you just went off the handle shaming people calling it sexist preemptively. So, yeah.
