Boys

58 Marvel titles
42 Dragon Ball Z titles
39 DC titles
24 Naruto titles
3 South Park titles
3 Ben 10 titles
Ninjabread Man
Counter Force
Anubis II

Girls

126 PlayFirst time management games (includes Diner Dash series, Burger Shop, Ice Cream Craze, Dress Shop Hop, Sally's Salon, Miss Management, Vogue Tales, Jenny's Fish Shop, Game of Life- Path to Success, Operation Mania, etc)
26 Harvest Moon titles
19 Barbie titles
18 Imagine titles
16 Petz titles
5 Bratz titles
4 Winx titles
4 Hannah Montana titles
4 Cooking Mama titles
3 My Games titles
3 Ener-G titles
Action Girlz Racing
Love Fashion and Friends
My Horse and Me
Mary-Kate and Ashley's Winner's Circle
My Boyfriend
Emma in the Mountains
My Baby Boy
My Baby Girl
Dora Saves the Snow Princess
Totally Spies

Ambiguous

Billy the Wizard: Rocket Broomstick Racing
Rock 'n' Roll Adventures
The Sonic franchise
Dance Dance Revolution
The Sims

I should note that I was reluctant  to add entire franchises such as Marvel knowing that not all of the titles are shovelware, but considering I added the entire Harvest Moon franchise as well knowing very well that not all of those titles are shovelware either, I would be undercutting the male shovelware if I didn't. I also originally had Disney titles under girls, but with further investigation, there's such a mix of gender in there that I decided to withdraw it completely.

Objections, additions, and subtractions are expected. THROW EM!

Quite a few that you've listed under the genders are fairly unisex, and the sims, and sonic are definitely not shovelware, and theres allot of kids games in there that aren't shovelware either.

The amusing thing here is that I was the one who added most of these games ^^
Also most of these games are not really shuffle ware but games aimed at kids.

You lost me at Harvest Moon.  They are hardcore games and very complex for casuals to play.  I understand shovelware to be cookie cutter games made cheaply.  Harvest Moon is not that.  Bah, nonsense I say!

I guess what this really shows is how subjective the term really is.

Interesting list. Can't say that I'm surprised, considering that there are many parents out there that may not be all that interested in video games themselves, but buy them for their children.  In other words, I echo what others are saying above.

I agree that the Harvest Moon games shouldn't be included in that list (even if they are a million variations of the same game), since they are too complex to be thrown together like shovelware.

None of these are shovelware. You could find some instances in franchises where yes, shovelware was produced... but no, in general, these are not."
I stopped with Harvest Moon, but I agree entirely.  I would NEVER buy a Dragonball game (yuck), but clearly they are usually good games with good production values - not shovelware.  Shovelware is those Billy the Wizard type games.

Yeah what everyone's said, but nice effort, and despite the mistakes it shows it's not just girls that get the sh... er, that phrase sounds wrong in this case. It's not just girl games that suck, boy games can suck equally well :P

Billy the Wizard was originally called Barry Hatter. True story. Data Design's incredible creativity never ceases to amaze me.

I equal shovelware with crap games, so a lot of the games listed don't belong there like people have mentioned.

If you consider shovelware to be an overwhelming number of games in a frachise, I can see why you'd include things like Harvest Moon, but they are definity not shovelware by my definition.  All the Harvest Moon games I've played have been very different experiences, they're all just built atop the same solid gameplay mechanic.

I'm gonna say the Sims franchise is venturing into shovelware though.  I picked up MySims for Wii when it came out based on the Sims pedigree & the appealing character/art style, but it turned out to be just an annoying LEGO-type simulator.

And did I miss the obvious games-based-on-movies entry?

Not only is the term "shovelware" subjective, but so is the categorizing of the games for each gender. Though, I suppose if the developer/publisher stated that they are marketing it to one gender, then that would be a reason to list them in that category. Sure, most of the games listed under "girls" would be considered to be true by others, but there's a few games in each category that I don't think the developer intended to aim at one gender or the other.

A lot of those aren't shovelware... shovelware is a game that is basically unplayable and probably took a week for the team to make.

I don't understand how you chose many of these franchises as being "shovelware". If Harvest Moon is shovelware for girls, why don't you ass Dynasty Warriors and shovelware for guys? "Shovelware" doesn't mean a series that a developer/publisher milks with many releases etc...

I think you have a misguided idea of what shovelware is. Just because it's based off of an existing franchise (e.g. Totally Spies) does not mean it's shovelware. You are on the right track with "Petz" and "Ener-G" titles, though.

Shovelware is in the eye of the beholder.  One man's shovelware could be another man's quality title.  I mean, somebody here must have enjoyed Ninjabread Man.  Anybody?

Anybody?

Alright, maybe not Ninjabread Man.

The Nancy Drew PC and DS games are clearly aimed at girls and women. I've only actually played one of those games--a DS game--and it was not very good. I can't speak for Nancy Drew games on the whole, though.

Now that I give it more thought,  you're right about the Sims. Too much care went into making those games to ever consider them shovelware. Poor Will Wright would shed an unnecessary tear if he read this thread, and I don't want to be a part of that.  ;-)

Very nice guys, I love the reactions that I received.

I think that I will stand by my list for now despite the compelling arguments here. To address the reason I put the whole franchise for Harvest Moon down, let me just lay down how I feel about the series. Yes, I love it. Yes, I've played quite a number from the series, Yes, I think good things about it. But no one can deny how incredibly similar all of them play out. Sure, there are tweaks in each of them that are just enough for me to pick up the next in the series. Different graphics? Totally there! Ostrich riding? YES! Ultimately though, it's the same old same old stuff. Over and over again. Nothing really new. So I'm keeping it. And under girls? Hell yes! I'm certain there's a good portion of guys that play the game, but the dating sim aspect especially? That's most certainly geared towards the feminines in the world.

I already explained my use of the whole franchises for Marvel and DC. Perhaps I'll amend the GOOD titles from the franchises out of there sometime, but that would also require me understanding the quality of all the games in the series. As is, I do not. I do know that a good chunk of them can not be, and so I leave it as is for the time being. My pen-ultimate list shall continue on!

You need to look closer at Japanese culture, Jacki. I really like the dating aspect. Of course, I like virtual novels and anime too.

Harvest Moon rocks, is for guys as much as it is for girls, and remains true to its core gameplay to please the loyal fans more than anything. Spin-offs do more changes to the formula. I look forward to Rune Factory Frontier for the Wii, blending Harvest Moon goodness with action JRPG goodness seems to be the perfect match. And yes, I'd bet there are far more dating sim-type games for males than there are for girls, as most of them are an excuse for soft-core porn, though there are people who enjoy the actual "gameplay" also and that's why you see non-porn versions in games like Harvest Moon and other series.

As for Marvel, you could have made it a broad comic-book based entry. Maybe then it'd seem more natural to lump all of them together instead of bothering to exclude the good games which have lesser numbers. I think Marvel games in particular have more good games than shovelware though. But maybe not, it's not like I research shovelware much, I might have just forgotten of most of it. Capcom's fighters are all grand (xmen vs, marvel vs, etc) as were the gameboy advance spiderman platformers and the action RPG games on the home systems.

But that's not what shovelware is. Shovelware is a game that has virtually no development values, and is made as quickly as possible and thrown out there just to make money. The harvest moon games, despite being quite similar, all have very decent development cycles. They aren't just being thrown out every couple of weeks to make some money.
