Not sandwich.

It's two pieces of bread with stuff in the middle. That makes it a sandwich man! This is a meat-cake;

I would say they are an evolved form of sandwiches. One day, a sandwich with raw beef on it, ascended to the heavens, and came back as as a new being, with toasted bread, and cooked beef, a long with pickles, lettuce, tomato, and onions.

So my excuse is, a sandwich went to the sun, got burnt, and caught a few flying vegetables(and one fruit) while flying back to earth.

Yeah. If I showed you two pictures with identical buns and a black bar obstructing the contents, you'd say they were both burgers. But one of them....was a breakfast SANDWICH with egg and sausage.

BOOM. I just impregnated your mind.

All hamburgers are sandwiches, but not all sandwiches are hamburgers. The typical imagined sandwich is not a hamburger, but it certainly fits the criteria for being a sandwich.

Burgers are a subsection of sandwiches that have become so diverse and varied i believe it should not longer fall under that umbrella. If you say "hey lets get some sandwiches" and you bring me a god damn burger, i'll slap you in the face and then eat the burger. Because burgers are great.

But no Pizzas are not pies. Pies have a pastry crust, pizzas have a bread crust. They are not in the same catagory. Sorry newyork, you're all bunch of assholes for pushing this term.

Since this thread got necro'ed and no one mentioned it...

The fine folks at McDonalds have also classified chicken nuggets and chicken strips as sandwiches. And they want to make $15 an hour. Pfft.

Do you believe in evolution?

Well burgers are a species that evolved out of sandwiches, yet they are no longer sandwiches, they evolved past that.

SCIENCE!

I would say no because they should have their own category due to the vast variety. Case in point (these burgers look a little moldy, but the image does showcase the diverse range):

They are different in the same way that Aioli and Mayo are different. Ie. A hamburger and a Sandwich are the same fucking item (like mayo and American Aioli); it's just some American decided that a new name changes the item, and the rest of the world sits by and wonders what the fuck is up with those Yankees changing the names of things.

Does that mean a hotdog is a sandwich?

If you slice the hot dogs in half, then lay them out on the bread, that would be a sandwich.

Now, if you are saying that a traditional style hot dog is a sandwich, that is incorrect. The proper definition of a sandwich is that it is meat and condiments between TWO pieces of bread means that a traditionally made hot dog does not get classified as a sandwich since a hot dog bun is ONE piece of bread wrapped around the hot dog.

So the only logical conclusion is that a hotdog is a sub sandwich. I don't see how ordering a "hotdog sub" would be different than ordering a hotdog. So i guess it's technically a kind of sandwich.

THANK YOU!!! I've been trying to explain that to people for years. IMO, any mean, veggies, and/or condiment between bread is a sandwich. Just like putting Felafel in Pita is a sandwich.

But wouldn't Pita cross the line between a taco and a wrap? It's just one piece of bread, folded over with all types of goodies in the middle - sounds like a taco. But the Pita bread texture and consistency is a far cry from both hard taco shells and tortillas. That is where I get a bit confused.

From Wikipedia: "A hamburger (or cheeseburger when served with a slice of cheese) is a sandwich". Being a student I trust Wikipedia for all my knowledge so this settles it.

@matthew: I think form matters. If you only fold the pita in half, it is a sandwich. If it's wrapped, it's a wrap. Same goes with any bread. I mean, a hamburger is not a sandwich either if you break the patty apart and roll them up in a bun.

A hamburger without buns is still a hamburger. So a hamburger can't be a sandwich.

In which case, wouldn't what we typically call a hamburger (hamburger in a bun) be a hamburger sandwich?

And regarding hotdogs, and it not having two pieces of bread, thus disqualifying it: wouldn't that just make the hotdog an open faced sandwich?
