I´ve played through all of the Halo games at least once and I enjoy them as shooters. But I´m not a huge fan of the universe and I don´t think I´ve played the multiplayer even once. I could’ve sworn that the appetite for Halo was long ago sated. We already got not one but three very sizable shooters. All of which were very similar (albeit incrementally improving) titles that involve largely the same identical marines-hurting-aliens gameplay. Halo 3 was a sufficient finale, offering more of the same chunky levels, all co-op friendly, a strong online component and neatly closing up the story so that the human race need no longer fear the threat of the strange alien alliance...

Halo is a great franchise that I've loved and spent a lot of time with, but I can't say I've kept up with Halo 3's multiplayer, largely in part due to DLC eventually becoming pretty necessary to enjoy most of it. I came into this game with low expectations. From the gameplay videos, interviews, previews, and whatever else I saw, it looked like it was going to be Halo 3, but played from a different perspective with a new game mode added to get some more money. I loved the music and visuals, especially playing the Rookie, as it differentiated itself from the other Halo games. Halo 3 ODST play much like Halo 3. More like Halo: Combat Evolved, actually. Gone is dual wielding and deployable equipment. Fall damage and the original health model are back. For those unfamiliar with Combat Evolved there a recharging health system called "stamina". Take damage and if you wait long enough with out taking any more you as good as new. Taking Halo in the right direction, interesting and emotive story but ultimately too short. While Firefight is fun, it soon wears thin- the multiplayer segment is great if you've not bought the DLC for Halo 3, but most people have. I bought it for £30 so didn't feel overcharged. If possible, get the game at a cut price as I did, otherwise the cost is too steep to justify purchase....
