A Journey To thatgamecompany's New PSN Game
The game itself sounds cool and intriguing, but the philosophy behind it is bizarre. Why in God's name would a player want to feel small and powerless? Fortunately, the game doesn't seem to actually give off that vibe at all, so I'm glad they missed the mark. I'll have to keep an eye on this one.
I dig the art design, but thatgamecompany has always been good at making some striking visuals. Gonna ad this to me E3 list!
I am pretty excited, and again, I really like the art design in this game. If you listen to some of the podcasts that the creators have been on, they said they started getting really depressed while making the game and then also trying to market it. There were days were people just wouldn't come in, people started giving up on the game entirely thinking it would never sell, ect. Going out there and being rejected time after time they said got tough. They said it was super hard since their game was kind of small audience wise and really couldn't push it as a full retail game. I am happy for them that they found a home in the Sony PSN camp and hopefully this one will be very cool as well.
Not only did I love Flower, I love all the design philosophies Chen brings to his game, I agree with him almost all the time when he takes about modern games.
The art style looks cool, and the idea of just being a pretty powerless normal figure in a big world seems exciting to me. As said before, I def get a Myst/exploration kinda vibe from this game. I can see myself dropping potentially hours into this.

One of the members of thatgamecompany graduated from my high school, and some of the teachers still talk about him.
That aside, this seems like the most focused and unique of their games, and I'm sure that it won't be as depressing and hopeless as it easily could be. I can't imagine that it'll be influential in any significant way, because of how focused it is on that one concept of powerless exploration, but I'm hoping that it'll turn out well.

"It's an interesting issue, not all forms of escapism have to involve making you feel all powerful and in complete control of the game environment. I kind of like the idea of different experiences which make the player feel like they are subservient to the game world rather than imposing their presence upon it.
He said he wants to return players to a feeling of being small and powerless, with a sense of awe toward the wide unknown world.
This is such a great idea, but seems like something really hard to do. That sense of awe is something you get a lot when you're younger because you're experiencing a lot of things for the first time, but as you get older you come to know what to expect in life and you get it less and less. The sad part is you don't really learn to appreciate that kind of stuff until after the fact.
I think the last time I got that feeling from a game was when World of Warcraft came out and everywhere you looked there were tons of people running around and there was this huge environment to explore and you had the feeling that the world was really alive around you. It's hard to recapture that spirit.
Thatgamecompany is one of the most important development teams working in (the fringes of) main stream gaming at the moment. Tonally, the way they tell their stories reminds me a lot of the way Pixar tells stories in their short films. Being able to tell a story or set a mood that is compelling and emotionally affecting using only images is a true talent.
The multiplayer sounds similar to Demon's Souls.
I enjoyed Flower for what it was, and now that I think about it some of my favourite games have featured characters walking around in a big, almost empty, world (for example Shadow of the Colossus).
This might be interesting, it also might be really boring.
Really excited that there's even a market for this type of game in this day and age. Gives me hope for the future of games in general. Good show!
Setting and tone reminds me of the first level of Kings Quest 7
"The game is about exploring this strange world as a hapless character with no foreknowledge of his or her strange surroundings. There's an ever-present giant mountain with a beam of light off in the distance that serves as your constant goal, but other than that, you're just there to explore."
Is Agro in it?
This "game" seems beyond words. It's pushing the boundaries of what can be considered a gaming experience. I'm fascinated to see what this turns out like.
"Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."
