Originally a carpenter named Jumpman, this Italian plumber has gone on to become the most recognizable video game character of them all, starring in a veritable pantheon of titles like kart racing and sports. He has been voiced by Charles Martinet for nearly 20 years.
The Original Donkey Kong made his debut in the game of the same name, where he tossed barrels at his nemesis Mario. His grandson, Donkey Kong Jr., went on to create a legacy of his own in games such as Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze.
The Toad is a member of the Toad species. He is a loyal attendant of Princess Peach and often assists Mario on his journeys in a variety of ways.

Princess Peach Toadstool is usually the damsel in distress from the Mario franchise. She gets kidnapped frequently by Bowser, though she's not averse to being captured by various other villains from time to time.

Yoshi is a recurring character in the Mario franchise and has since gone on to star in his own games.
Lakitu has appeared in a variety of Mario games; from Super Mario Bros on the NES right up to Mario Kart 7. He is responsible for dropping Spinies onto the levels below, holding up signs and his very own start signal from all nine Mario Kart games.
Bowser is one of the most iconic villains in gaming. His role as the main antagonist in the Mario franchise has cemented this King of Koopas' status in video game history.

Luigi is Mario's brother. He began as a simple palette swap of Mario, but was later differentiated. In his later forays, he provides comic relief.
Wario is Mario's rival and doppelganger; a crude garlic-loving brute with an obsession with treasure. Wario's name is a portmanteau of the word "warui" ('bad' in Japanese) "Mario".
The heroine of the Adventures of Lolo games. In the second game she gets captured by King Egger, but in later games she is playable.
Chameleo Arm is a boss character in Kirby Super Star/Kirby Super Star Ultra, that reappeared for a cameo as a keychain in Kirby: Triple Deluxe.
A member of the Indigo Plateau Elite 4 in both Pokémon Red/Blue and Gold/Silver. He is a master of Fighting-type Pokémon.
The leader of the Pokémon gym in Saffron City, and holder of the Soul Badge. She uses psychic-type Pokémon.
Donbe is one of two main characters of the Shin Onigashima series.
Thanks to the extreme popularity of the Pokémon cartoon, Pikachu became the most famous Pocket Monster of them all. Pikachu has also become the unofficial mascot for the franchise.
Captain of the Toad Brigade. He is the protagonist of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
Link is the iconic protagonist of The Legend of Zelda franchise.
Efreeti is a sub-boss from Kirby's Dream Land 2.

Zero is a recurring antagonist in the Kirby franchise that is able to control Dark Matter.

Octo, or "Scowler", was a boss character in Wario Land 3. His palette was revised in Dr. Mario 64 to avoid racially insensitive connotations, but retained the same general color scheme in Nintendo Puzzle Collection.
