Looking back at 2010

I checked out my Best of 2010 list the other day and thought that my list would be really different today since I have played much more of the best games that 2010 had to offer. So I looked at the best games that were released in 2010 and I had played and after having given every game it's place I see that my new list is much better than the original list. 2010 was amazing year in video gaming and therefore I had to do a new list of what I think is the best the year had to offer. So here is my "correct" list of what video games were the best in 2010 in my opinion.

List items

  • The best game of 2010 wasn't on my original list! But it's just because I missed out on playing it. I picked up Red Dead Redemption in a time in 2011 when there were very few games coming out and I couldn't stop playing it, and bought all of the add-on packs for the game after finishing it.

I am a huge Rockstar fan, GTA are my favourite games, and I can't believe it today that I waited this long to experience Red Dead Redemption. Everything about the game is great, just horseback riding through a desert and shooting birds is great fun. I also can't wait for the next GTA game since the controls and gameplay in Red Dead Redemption shows how Rockstar should do the next GTA game.

If you enjoy GTA games, play Red Dead Redemption. And even if you don't enjoy GTA try out Red Dead Redemption, you will probably love it!

  • One of the first games I bought after getting a Wii, and this is the reason why you should own a Wii along with the first game. On a normal year this would be game of the year, but 2010 was not a normal year in video gaming.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is simply put just pure fun. The Wii controls work perfectly, it's the best 3D Mario game ever. It does alot of new things but still you feel nostalgia playing it. I couldn't stop smiling when I was playing Super Mario Galaxy 2, and that's what video games are for me. I play video games to have fun.

I recommend getting a Wii today simply to play Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, especially 2. Nintendo can still deliver an experience no one other can!

  • God of War III was my game of the year on my original list and for a good reason, but after having played more games from 2010 I realize it's not the best game of the year but just barely. This is what I had to say about the game:

"God of War III is the game of the year for me, and I even realized it as soon as I began playing the game. The story is so epic, the battles are so huge and great, the graphics and art style is amazing and so on. God of War III is a great way to end one of the best video game series and again is my pick for game of the year"

Wow, God of War III is so great, so epic, amazing and so on. This is one of the prime reason to own a PS3. The beginning of the game is one of my favourite moments in gaming.

  • Pac-Man was the runner up on my original list, and lands the fourth spot on my new list, this is what I had to say about the game:

"Wow! I never got to play the original Championship Edition but I always wanted to, so when I heard of this DX edition was to be released I decided to buy it right away, and damn this game is fantastic. Amazing how small changes to the Pac-Man formula change the game completely and this is definitely the best Pac-Man game ever"

If you still haven't played Pac-Man Championship Edition DX today then you have to go buy it. This is the most addicting bite sized game I have ever played, it even exceeds the original Donkey Kong in my opinion!

  • Super Meat Boy is a game I knew right away that I would love. Since it will probably never be released for the PS3 I got it for the PC and played it with a controller. So it's the only game on the list I didn't play on a console.

Super Meat Boy is a game no retro gamer can miss out on. It's brutal difficulty, tight controls and amazing 2D platforming style is just amazing. I have spent countless hours on this game, whether it's just trying to complete a level, trying to collect a bandage, trying to beat a friends time on a level or something else. Super Meat Boy is just fun, you will die alot but still you will continue playing. And seeing the replay of your playthrough when you finally finish a level is always a great experience.

The game is out for the Xbox and PC, pick it up and love it!

  • I love me some 2D platformers and Donkey Kong Country Returns is one of the best games in that genre ever. The level design is so clever and much of the things that happen in the game are just wonderful to look at and experience. And the game uses the Wii remote in a great way, you never feel the game is cheap when you die. The game is very challenging but for us retro gamers that is great!

One of the games you can't be without if you own a Wii, or consider yourself a retro gamer.

  • Heavy Rain was number 3 on my original list and this is what I had to say about it:

"I had my doubts about Heavy Rain when I first heard of it. But the moment I began playing this game I was sucked in. Never in my life have I been so stressed out because of a video game, and I even stopped playing because I didn't want to choose in a difficult circumstances. Just pick up Heavy Rain if you haven't and especially if you have PlayStation Move the game is even better if you're using Move"

Still today there is no game out there like Heavy Rain, and it's one of the best games the PS3 has to offer. And probably the best use of PlayStation Move. Just experience this story if you haven't!

  • I'm a huge Rock Band fan but I had to wait quite a while before getting Rock Band 3. Since I got it I have bought the Keyboard and completely stopped playing 1 and 2.

Rock Band 3 is the best music game on the market, it's not much better than 2 but it's better. It's hard to see Harmonix expanding the concept beyond Rock Band 3, except for maybe the track list. You can import the songs from the other Rock Band games, all of the earlier DLC songs are available in 3 and it's still adding more songs. Harmonix, great job on Rock Band 3!

If you still enjoy the music genre of video games buy Rock Band 3, it's definitely the best that the genre has to offer.

  • Bit.Trip Runner is a game I so wanted to play when I heard of it but couldn't because I didn't have a Wii console. Now I have one and Bit.Trip Runner is one of my favourite games for the system.

It's hard to explain what kind of a game Bit.Trip Runner is, but maybe the best way is to say it's a rhythmic running game. The game is so cool and fun, the main character is so funny when it moves that I have a very hard time to stop playing the game. And even though it can be very hard to see yourself die at the end of the level and have to start at the beginning again, the game doesn't get frustrating. You only have yourself to blame for failing!

This is definitely a game for retro gamers, very easy to control the character but the game is brutal difficult. Watch some gameplay videos and you'll see if this game is something for you.

  • FIFA 11 was number 5 on my original list but jumps ahead of BioShock 2 on my new list. This is what I had to say about FIFA 11:

"I love my FIFA games and this year was a fantastic year for FIFA fans. 2010 FIFA World Cup was a fantastic game but FIFA 11 was even better. The core gameplay in FIFA 11 is so tight and good that I can't see myself stop playing it until FIFA 12"

FIFA 11 was great but FIFA 12 is just so much better. Buy FIFA 12 today instead of 11.

  • Limbo is a game that I really wanted to play in 2010 but couldn't because it was only out for the Xbox. Boy am I glad it was released for the PS3.

Limbo is just a beautifull game, you are really living the game when you play it. The art style, sounds and music and gameplay are amazing. I don't know what to say about Limbo, it has some problems but they are so small that you can completely ignore them while you are drinking the atmosphere in.

Limbo is out for Xbox, PS3 and PC. Buy it, it's pretty cheap and you will be amazed playing it.

  • Probably the best PSP game ever released, just barely missed out on being on my original list since I bought it in January.

God of War is probably the only series that you can take from the PS2 or PS3 and convert to the PSP without feeling you have taken the controls away from the player. I loved God of War: Chains of Olympus on the PSP but Ghost of Sparta is even better. It even does some things better than God of War III but something about the game didn't grasp me as much and so the game is number 12 on my list.

If you have a PSP then you have to pick this game up, this is the game that shows you why you bought a PSP. And the game runs even better on the PS3 thanks to the HD upgrade, God of War fanatics, play this game!

  • Mafia II was originally number 4 on my list but drops down on my new list. This is what I had to say about the game:

"I am a huge Mafia fan so I have been waiting for this game for a long time. Mafia II is a great game, although not as good as the original but it's still a great game and the story is very good and the end will come as a shock to you. Don't write this game off because of it's Metascore"

Looking back at Mafia II the game wasn't as good as I first thought it was but it's still great fun. The game has the same problem as L.A. Noire, it has a big great city but since the game is so linear you don't get to experience it that well. Still, this is a game i recommend picking up today.

  • Mega Man 10 was number 6 on my original list, this is what I had to say about it:

"I just love the NES Mega Man games, and I played Mega Man 9 way too much when it was released so I couldn't wait for this game. Although it wasn't as good as Mega Man 9, 10 is a fantastic Mega Man game and I have played it for countless hours and even got myself to achieve the insane achievement of completing the game without being damaged!"

You can buy the game for Xbox, PS3 and Wii so there is no reason for you not to own it, except if you don't have Mega Man 9. If you don't have number 9 you should buy it and when you're finished with 9 then you should pick up number 10!

  • I always wanted to try out 3D Dot Game Heroes but I could never find a copy, so the game missed out on the original list.

3D Dot Game Heroes is a tribute to retro gamers, the game plays like the original Zelda or Zelda A Link To The Past and does it really good. Also the game references alot of other older games like the Mega Man series. The music, over the top humour and just everything in the game is fantastic. I had so much fun playing it, that just writing this just makes me want to pop it back in my PS3!

This game will be one of the gems from this generations of systems, pretty rare game and only released on the PS3. If you see it, pick it up!

  • I really loved Remedy's work on the Max Payne series so I was extremely hopeful when I heard of Alan Wake, their next game. Alan Wake is a very strange game in a strange setting. I really liked the story and trying to figure out just what the hell was going on in the game, and the time I spent in the game was definitely worth spending but although it's a great game I wanted a little bit more out of it

  • 2010 FIFA World Cup wasn't on my original list because FIFA 11 improved the pure gameplay and I didn't want to have 2 FIFA games on my list, but here it is.

I couldn't stop playing this game, I enjoyed trying to achieve everything this game had to offer. Whether it was online competition or trying to beat the computer, I just couldn't get enough of this game. I even won the World Cup online with my home country Iceland, and made it to the quarter finals with the Faroe Islands. That says alot about how much I played 2010 FIFA World Cup.

I recommend picking this game up today because the World Cup and Euro games are different from the main FIFA games. The game is really good and is still today the newest FIFA games that focuses on national teams.

  • BioShock 2 was number 7 on my original list, it's strange to look back at BioShock 2 today since I have played the first game now, and the first game is just better. This is what I had to say about the game in my original list:

"I am so angry that I missed out on the original BioShock after having played number 2 this year. This was my first trip to Rapture and I loved it. The atmosphere and just everything. Now I can't wait to pick up the original and love it"

The BioShock series is amazing, pick this game up after you play the original, and get ready for BioShock Infinite!

  • NBA Jam is a game that barely missed out on being on my original list since I bought it in January 2011.

This throwback to the orignal gameplay of the NBA Jam series is so much fun. Of course it's much more fun when you are playing it with others but the game still has alot to offer when you're alone. Extremely easy to pick up and play, NBA Jam is one of the best partygames you can find. The game is just pure fun and reminds me of the time when video games were just about having fun.

You should find NBA Jam for cheap today or buy the On Fire Edition online, you won't regret it!

  • ModNation Racers on the PS3 was number 8 on the previous list. I had this to say about the game:

"2010 was a good year for kart racing fans with the releases of Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing, Blur and ModNation Racers, and on top of my list was ModNation Racers. I had such a blast playing this game both online and offline, the story mode was pretty fun, and of course creating my own tracks and checking out tracks made by other users"

Very good kart racer that is going to be available for the PS Vita, if you enjoy kart racers you should give this one a try

  • The 2D platformer is my favourite genre in video gaming and Kirby's Epic Yarn is a fantastic game. The art style is just brilliant and the whole concept is awesome. But I also want games to challenge me and there fails Kirby's Epic Yarn to impress. It isn't even possible to die in the game! You are rewarded for going through the levels without being hurt but that wasn't enough for me and so this game didn't grasp me as much as I had hoped.

  • I am a huge fan of a great kart racing game and 2010 was a good year for kart racing fans. Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing does a good job of keeping you entertained and it's a blast driving through its multiple tracks. But a lot of the weapons fail to impress and the game should have shown more love to SEGA's great heritage instead of being overflowed with Sonic stuff. But all together a good time while it lasts.

  • Scribblenauts was a fantastic idea that wasn't done quite right. Super Scribblenauts fixes that issue and is a very clever and a good game. The sheer amount of stuff that you can do in this small DS game is simply brilliant. I really can't believe that the developers could think for all of these words that work with the game. This game should definitely be a part of your Nintendo DS collection.

  • Joe Danger was number 9 on my original list but barely makes it into my new list. This is what I said about the game in my old list:

"I have always loved playing my NES game Excitebike, Joe Danger is for me a modern take on Excitebike and does it's job. Joe Danger is simply put a fantastic game that packs a lot of content for such a small game and it's a lot of fun"

Joe Danger is a great game and was recently released for the Xbox, just buy it already, it's great fun!

  • I have often thought to myself when I have been playing a kart racing game why no one made a realistic kart racing game with real cars. Finally we have a game like that with Blur. The game definitely isn't perfect but if you look past some of it's flaws its a lot of fun. I am definitely very satisfied with Blur and it's a shame that this game didn't do better in the sales department.

  • I'm a sucker for James Bond games and after falling in love with Quantum of Solace I was very excited for Blood Stone. Unfortunately Blood Stone is a much weaker game than Quantum of Solace and is very rough around the edges. If you turn off your brain and just blast your way through it's short single player campaign you will have fun with it but the next entry in the James Bond series has to be better than this!

  • Super Crate Box is an awesome small simple game. You control this small guy that has to stay alive and collect boxes while enemies come storming toward him. The players weapon is replaced with each box he collects and the main target in the game is not to kill the enemies but to collect as many boxes as you can. It's a blast to play this game for a couple of minutes in between the bigger releases, good job!

  • Epic Mickey received a lot of attention before it's release but didn't live up to the hype. I decided to give it a go and my feelings towards the game are mixed. The gameplay idea of creating and destroying the environment with paint and thinner is a very good one but the whole game around it isn't good enough. The camera is just awful and the game is quite slow. But there is definitely room for a great game with this idea, I just hope that the sequel will be better.

  • Sports Champions was number 10 on my original list and was a great tech demo for the PlayStation Move. This is what I had to say about the game back in the day:

"For me, Sports Champions is a fantastic first game to use with the PlayStation Move. All six sports are interesting and work very well, and when you play the game you really feel that the PlayStation Move has potentials to do something great"

  • Housemarque's game Super Stardust HD is one of the gems on the PlayStation Network. I was a bit surprised when I heard that they were doing Dead Nation but nevertheless I was quite interested. The game looks great and it's control is fine but somehow it let me down big time. I wasn't feeling it and the game didn't grasp me at all. Sorry Housemarque, this wasn't my cup of tea
