@ivdamke: Also Bloodborne goes beyond a game to me with its foreray into Cosmic Horror. Cosmic horror is one of the most tantalizing subjects in entertainment, in my mind.
Because its not just entertainment.. its the human condition. Questioning ourselves, questioning our reality.. the implications of existence and what it would mean if there were these "higher level" creatures in our universe just playing with us... or even worse - not playing with us cause we are absolutely insignificant.
When the implications of cosmic horror set into Bloodborne i think it elevates the game above the sum of its parts. The "eyes on the inside" concept has been around for a long time, the idea of being able to see 'beyond' into what the universe truly is, what it has to offer... and usually that results in madness because the universe truly has nothing to offer, just endless torment and eventual death as our bodies succumb to age, death and disease.
its the futility of the question that drives cosmic horror - you shouldnt even bother asking questions is the twisted message of the genre - but asking those questions is innate, its human nature.. so we ask them.. only to be disapointed by the results... and in worst case scenarios, madness ensues.
So Bloodborne isnt just 'gross out' to me, its philosophical and even a commentary on the human condition, the thirst for knowledge, this innate human need being a hopeless endeavor that results in nothing but misery, pain, madness and death.. because there is no purpose... as much as we wish and hope there was... we ask those questions to find a purpose only to realize asking those questions proved to us our greatest fear : Nothing matters. Your hopes, your dreams, your loves, your thoughts - youre just a sack of meat waiting to die.
So.. im big into Cosmic Horror and BB delivers in spades
edit: i should be honest.. i really want them to play so we can see if Alex's head explodes ala Scanners as he further questions reality and the implications of existence :P lol
