Madden '09 Thoughts

Can't overstate Collins-worth. :P
Can't overstate Collins-worth. :P
So it's been awhile since I have written anything on here, mostly because I have been busy as shit. But, on with teh blogging.

So my last post was about Madden and my hopes for it's improved commentary. So how did all that turn out? Frigging great! The general buzz about Madden this year is that it is yet again a roster update without any appreciable new features, but I really find that though those criticisms though normally spot on this year lack their normal potency. Why? In my opinion people were so focused on what EA added "to" the game, that they are missing how EA took the existing gameplay and just nailed it. The graphics, controls, pre-snap menus, and overall presentation (though still years behind NFL 2k5) all really come together to make Madden '09 the first classic Next-Gen football game. My real life buddies hate sports games... With a passion so strong that Mel Gibson is currently in negotiations for the movie rights. But, with Madden '09 something happened.

- The brilliant commentary by Chris Collinsworth that really never gets old, except when he is trashing you as a player -
"Somepeople might think that after that failed onside kickoff that this game is over, I think this game was over before the opening kickoff"

- The almost photo realistic graphics

- The responsiveness of the controls, that have been tightened for every position on the field.

-  The customisability of the difficulty for both players individually, in muliplayer games.

-  And, unfortunately for my win/loss record the rewind feature. Which has been used by some of my more heel'ish friends to rob me of several victories. And, though usually this would be seen as an unwanted legal cheat code, it helps instill a feeling of confidence in people, who other wise would just be chewed up and spit out by my 1337 rookie/pro skillz (Ha ha)

All of these things added up to being able to play my real life friends in a sports game. Something that elevates, at least for me Madden '09, to my gaming Hall of Fame.

Madden '09 Commentary Video. Looks pretty sweet.

So I just found a video of Madden '09 gameplay, that has a pretty good segment of the new commentary team. It sounded a little robotic in some places but overall it was great. Since the lack of any commentary worth noting, was one of the only things stopping me from getting into Madden 08 the video got me pretty hyped up. I'll post the video here, though EA will likely have it pulled.

From Genre defining, to genre stagnating in one grapple.

WWF/WWE
WWF/WWE
WWF/WWE  wrestling games went from being one of the best multiplayer games of all time, to being little more than a loading screen with context. And, why you may ask? Because company after company feels that that they can move on withough AKI without losing the essence of their game. A worse mistake, has never been made without the direct loss of men’s lives or sovereign land. We went from "No Mercy" to the failed aborted fetus that is "Smackdown" from "Def Jam Vendetta Fight for New York" to "Def Jam Icon". Both of which though possibly well received by the gaming press, served largely as speed bumps in gaming history.

Thundercats Live Action Movie? Did I miss something?

WTF?
WTF?
July 16, 1999 - After months spent battling the Motion Picture Association of America, Thundercats: The Movie is finally ready for release. The movie's creators and the MPAA were at odds concerning the movie's rating: the MPAA was threatening to give the movie an NC-17 rating, a kiss of death at the box office. Thundercats producer Aston Phillips and director Jay Tudor finally defused the tense standoff by removing two sexually explicit scenes from the movie. In the first and less controversial scene, Cheetarah (Tea Leoni) emerges from her time-suspension capsule in heat with newly-grown Lion-o (Mathew McConnaughey) only too happy to oblige her need. The second scene, described as "deplorable" by an MPAA spokesman, details the close relationship between Tigra (David Carradine) and Panthro (Wesley Snipes) culminating with Tigra tossing Panthro's salad.

With the two scenes removed, Thundercats received its 'R' rating and is cleared for U.S. release. Yet the Thundercats creators are not rushing to release the movie. Believing they have a potential summer blockbuster on their hands, Phillips and Tudor are holding the movie until next Memorial Day weekend.

WTF Mythic!

So Warhammer Online just recently decided to not only to take out 4 whole classes.

Choppa
Knight of the Blazing Sun
Hammerer
Black Knight

“Four of the classes that we’ve been working on, we just couldn’t get great,” he continued. “We looked at them and we said these careers are just not great… and we tried, and they weren’t coming out well.”

“We tried,” Jacobs said, “we tried to see if we could make them better and we just couldn’t make them great. So we had a choice. Do we put in some non-great careers just because they are iconic, or we cut them out and put them in post-launch if we can get them right, or do we not put them in at all?”

“I wish we didn’t have to do it,” Mark said, “I really do. Unlike the capital cities [which provided a silver lining in the end], I can honestly say that I really wish we didn’t have to cut them out, but it’s better for them to be cut out than to have classes that aren’t great and that we would spend more time trying to make them great post-launch than we should have to.”

They will also be taking out every city in the game except

Altdorf and the inevitable city (Mythic Invented city).

“A number of months ago,” Jacobs began, “we sat down and looked at where we were with our Capital Cities and we looked at what we were doing with Altdorf and Inevitable, we looked at the Greenskin home, the Dwarf home and we went ‘there’s an awful lot to do here and there are some issues‘.”

“we decided to focus our energies on two capital cities; one for Order and one for Destruction, and make them fabulous, said Jacobs.

All of this in the name of giving the player a more polished game.

Maybe I'm not seeing things clearly, but this makes me really angry. They spend years talking about making the game great at the expense of their time tables and our inpatience, but then when it's time to do that, they just cut the stuff that needs work. Please someone explain to me why this isn't all that bad.
