Madden '09 Thoughts

So my last post was about Madden and my hopes for it's improved commentary. So how did all that turn out? Frigging great! The general buzz about Madden this year is that it is yet again a roster update without any appreciable new features, but I really find that though those criticisms though normally spot on this year lack their normal potency. Why? In my opinion people were so focused on what EA added "to" the game, that they are missing how EA took the existing gameplay and just nailed it. The graphics, controls, pre-snap menus, and overall presentation (though still years behind NFL 2k5) all really come together to make Madden '09 the first classic Next-Gen football game. My real life buddies hate sports games... With a passion so strong that Mel Gibson is currently in negotiations for the movie rights. But, with Madden '09 something happened.
- The brilliant commentary by Chris Collinsworth that really never gets old, except when he is trashing you as a player -
"Somepeople might think that after that failed onside kickoff that this game is over, I think this game was over before the opening kickoff"
- The almost photo realistic graphics
- The responsiveness of the controls, that have been tightened for every position on the field.
- The customisability of the difficulty for both players individually, in muliplayer games.
- And, unfortunately for my win/loss record the rewind feature. Which has been used by some of my more heel'ish friends to rob me of several victories. And, though usually this would be seen as an unwanted legal cheat code, it helps instill a feeling of confidence in people, who other wise would just be chewed up and spit out by my 1337 rookie/pro skillz (Ha ha)
All of these things added up to being able to play my real life friends in a sports game. Something that elevates, at least for me Madden '09, to my gaming Hall of Fame.
