I did a much better job actually playing games that came out this calendar year than years past. I do not intend to get on the next-gen hype train until 2015, but I did manage to snag a 3DS in order to give this list some much needed variety. Here are my almost 10 top 10 games of 2013!
Hot damn this game made me reset my 3DS a whole mess of times. Like Patrick I found that XCOM acted as a gateway drug to Fire Emblem. I spent upwards of 60 hours turning Ricken and Virion into lean-mean Valmese killing machines. I cannot recommend this game enough.
I do not care about the lack of any strong female characters. Or lazy stereotyping...or smashing a dude's testicles with a baseball bat (ok...that last bit made me cringe, but I still enjoyed it). This was by far my most anticipated game of 2013 and it only somewhat disappointed me. I do not mean that in any serious way, just that some of the game felt dated. That did not stop this game from flooring me in multiple ways to be one of my most played (and enjoyed) in 2013.
I did not enjoy the way this game played. It just felt clunky and exactly like the first Bioshock. That being said this game has a fantastic (if convoluted) story and creates a world that sends chills up the spine. The mechanized George Washingtons similarly enhanced my enjoyment of the game...that and fulfilling my life long dream to fight early twentieth century Irishmen.
I got this game for Christmas and have yet to beat it, but I see why everyone is praising it. I really have nothing to add to the "old, but new and exciting" accolades so I will settle for joining the choir.
I had not played a Pokemon game since Blue so I dove right into Y and the nostalgia came on hard. You even get a Blastoise!!! Even though the Pokemon franchise has evolved little, I still enjoyed this game immensely.
I am happy that flash games are finally getting the respect they deserve. Ok...I put this game on my GOTY list...can you release my family now Mr. Lang?
